3 E mail Father Ralph: Youth Groups The 2017 fall season of our high school youth group starts tonight (Sunday evening) right after the 5:30 Mass at 6:30 in the Parish Center with pizza and an information session for high schoolers and their parents. Come, meet Pat McDonough, our new Director of Youth and Young Adult Ministry and find out what our youth program has in store for the months ahead. If you know of a high school student who might not see this notice, please call his/ her parent and tell them about tonight s meeting. In addition, Pat is gathering with young adults (ages 22-29) on Friday, October 20th at 7:30pm in the Parish Center for the start of a group to connect with faith and one another, Please spread the word to any young adults who are out of college and beyond. Give them a copy of the notice on page 13 of the bulletin. Showing Up Don t come to the wrong conclusion: Despite the parable that Jesus tells in today s gospel (Matthew 22:1-14) God is not an angry king who, if he doesn t get his way, destroys his own people and burns their cities. Jesus often tells outrageous stories so that we sit up and take notice and remember what s important to him. And what s important here is showing up. We actually don t need Jesus to convince us of this. Have you ever thrown a party and had guests not show up? Unless they were in an accident or sick, we re upset that they didn t come to receive the gift of our cooking and company. Jesus relates this upsetment to God s kingdom. He expects us to show up. And who is the us? In his story of the wedding banquet, EVERYONE is invited, good and bad alike. This of course shocks us. We expect that God s invitation is only for the good people. And this plays out in one of two ways. We either consider ourselves to be among the good people and feel uncomfortable when those others show up OR we consider ourselves to be not good enough and we stay away. But in God s kingdom, everyone is invited and the real losers in Jesus story are the ones who choose not to show up. And then there s man who didn t dress up for the banquet. It seems odd and heartless that he gets thrown out for not dressing for a wedding -- especially since he was invited at the last minute. But the point of this is that while he showed up physically, his heart wasn t really into it. He didn t need to wear a tuxedo, but his lack of respect was obvious in how he dressed and the king calls him on this. The lesson here is that Jesus expects his followers to show up, not as perfect people, but as people who want to be present to him. The application of the lesson can certainly be applied to showing up for Mass each week, but also to showing up to care for a sick relative, or to showing up to offer assistance to a person in need, or to showing up with forgiveness toward someone who has hurt us. Did you get your invitation from Jesus this week? Oh wait, you just did! 3

Contact our Grand Knight for additional details: JoinKofC@gmail.com From Catholics For Freedom of Religion Court Rules Against Football Coach Silent Prayer: In August, a 3-judge panel of the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, struck down the appeal of Washington State H.S. football coach, Joe Kennedy, who was fired for taking-a-knee on the 50-yard line after a game, bowing his head to silently thank God for a good game, and 30 seconds later - leave. Alzheimer s Caregiver Support Group Meetings are now held on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month at 11:00 am in St. Bernard s Parish Center. This program is designed to help each other cope with the challenging situation of dealing with someone with dementia. For more information, please call Sister Maureen at Judge Milan Smith wrote, "By kneeling and praying on the 50-yard line immediately after games while in view of students and parents, Kennedy was sending a message about what he values as a coach, what the District considers appropriate behavior, and what students should believe, or how they should behave." Even though students were not required to pray with him, in 2015 the Bremerton School District issued a directive that forbade Kennedy from exercising his faith in any way that would be visible to students. The directive included anything from praying to wearing a religious icon. Mid-Week Mid-Morning Book Discussion Dead Wake the last crossing of the Lusitania On May 1, 1915, with WWI entering its tenth month, the luxury ocean liner Lusitania sailed out of New York, bound for Liverpool, carrying a record number of children and infants. The passengers were surprisingly at ease, even though Germany had declared the seas around Britain to be a war zone. As a German U-boat and the Lusitania made their way toward Liverpool, an array of forces, both grand and achingly small, all converged to produce one of the great disasters of history. Join your fellow parishioners on Wednesday, October 18 at 10 AM in the Parish Center for an informal discussion of Erik Larson s critically acclaimed Dead Wake the last crossing of the Lusitania. For more information please contact Wally Rodier at or wrodi@verizon.net. "Think about where that leads," said First Liberty counsel, Jeremy Dys. "That means the Muslim teacher could not wear her hijab, the Jewish teacher couldn't wear his yarmulke, and the Catholic teacher couldn't wear her crucifix." "Banning all coaches from praying individually in public just because they can be seen is wrong," said First Liberty President Shackelford. "This is not the America contemplated by our Constitution." (dailycaller.com,8/23/17; latimes.com, 8/23/17; breakingchristiannews.com, 8/24/17) "A thankful heart is not only the greatest virtue, but the parent of all the other virtues."
