Great Service! E mail Father Ralph: shepherd@stbernardchurch.org Only fifty away? The other day someone pointed out that we are only fifty $5,000 pledges away from reaching out goal in our Let s Build Campaign. Over five years such a pledge comes to $83 a month or $20 a week. Pooled together with all the other pledges, a person s $20 a week will get us a beautiful, spiritual, safe parish campus that we can be proud of. A new larger lobby will be an excellent addition to our church, allowing for better traffic flow and place for people to gather before funerals and weddings. (One of our recent weddings involved steady rain -- and yes they say that s good luck, but it would be better luck to have a nice dry place to greet the guests.) The leaky moldy tower can be taken down and a new steeple put up. All for $20 a month. If you have been thinking of giving to our campaign, why not be one of the fabulous fifty families making that $5,000 pledge? Don t you love it when you go to a restaurant or go to get a haircut or have your car repaired and you get great service? What makes the service great is not merely the efficient accomplishment of the function, but the attitude of the people who are performing the service. Jesus knows this very well when he overhears his disciples arguing over which of them is the greatest in today s gospel (Mark 9:30-37). If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all, he says. And we know this to be true about our waitresses, our hairdressers and our car mechanics -- the one who serves us best gets the #1 rating. So why not try to be #1 this week? #1 at your job (if you have a job). #1 at your marriage (if you re married). #1 as a parent or grandparent (if you ve got offspring). #1 as a friend (you have friends, right?) #1 as a neighbor. And #1 as a Christian. It s all about attitude and service. In the Letter of James (James 3:16-4:3) that we hear today, he invites us to consider our attitude: Where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every foul practice. But the wisdom from above is first of all pure, then peaceable, gentle, compliant, full of mercy and good fruits, without inconstancy or insincerity. And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace for those who cultivate peace. This is a good week to look at those good qualities and see how we can express them in our attitude toward others. And there is no shortage of examples of good service here in our parish. Last week s Block Party was a great experience because of the hard work and service of our Renaissance Group and the teens who came to serve. (Thank you everyone!) We have opportunities to serve at St. Bernard s from the time a person carries their newborn baby into church for baptism til the time a person is carried out for the last time. Read through the bulletin each week and consider two things: gratitude for the many people involved in serving others here and also consider where you might be invited by God to get involved in offering some of your time so that we continue to provide great service to those we encounter. Maybe you have some time during weekday mornings to be a greeter at funerals. Maybe you have time to help weed one of the gardens. Since you come to church on Sundays, maybe you d consider serving in one of the ministries -- sing in a choir, be an usher, greet people as they arrive, etc. Let us know where your interests lie and let s use those for great service! 3
Parish News The Rosary Group is meeting on October 1 in the prayer room of the church at 12:30 pm where we will pray the rosary together. We receive much consolation from offering our prayers for our personal intentions and those of our Catholic family. We will pray for all those suffering from natural disasters in our country and in other parts of the world. We always pray for Pope Francis, all the hierarchy and clergy, especially Fathers Ralph, Joe, and Innocent, and all religious. Those who protect us in our towns and around the world, and PEACE (as opposed to turmoil) within our homes, country, and our Roman Catholic Church are also included in our prayers. The month of October is dedicated to the Holy Rosary; so please try to join us. All women if the parish are welcome. A Note of Thanks from Sister Gertrude I would like to thank you all, the parishioners of St. Bernard Church, Levittown, New York, for your generosity in supporting our ministry among the poor and the destitute, in Chennai, India. The funds raised by Father Augustine through the sale of paintings have reached us and I assure you that they will be put to good use for the wellbeing of our residents. No help is small when it is done with love. Please continue to support us with your prayers and we assure to do the same. 6 Adult faith formation Maybe it s time to Belong FALL ALPHA IS UNDERWAY WITH 140 SEEKERS!! 140 Adults and Teens have started the ALPHA adventure! Going to church but not baptized? Baptized, going to a Catholic church, but not Catholic? Baptized Catholic, going to church, but not confirmed in the faith? Join the journey to adult faith! Alpha is a dinner-video-discussion program about life, faith and God Name: Phone: Best time to call: Place form in collection basket, or contact Diane Vella: ext. 143 or dvella@stbernardchurch.org in English or Spanish. Learn more and reserve your place for Spring Alpha, 8 Friday evenings starting March 23: What if my grandchild isn t baptized?? (Part 1) by Diane Vella, Pastoral Associate It s every faithful grandparent s greatest disappointment: A son or daughter has chosen not to baptize his/her child their grandchild! I recently had a conversation about this with a concerned grandfather, who was hoping to arrange a secret baptism for his grandchild when his son and the baby were coming home to Levittown for a visit. This immediately reminded me of a classic All in the Family episode where Archie Bunker tries to get his pastor to baptize his grandchild against the wishes of daughter Gloria and son-in-law Meathead Mike. The Rev. Fletcher (or Felcher; whatever :)) refuses, and Archie, having learned his catechism well, and therefore knowing that anyone with the right intention can baptize, went ahead and took little Joey to the sink and baptized him in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen? Baptism is not a magic formula, it s a sacrament of the Church. The grace (God s life in us) of the sacrament has to be received, accepted and lived out by the recipient, or in the case of an infant, by his/her parents or someone consciously designated by the parents. Church law is clear that at least one parent must consent to the baptism, and that there be a well-founded hope that the child will be brought up in the catholic religion. (Canon 868) If this is lacking the Baptism is to be deferred. This makes sense. Without this engagement by the parents, Baptism becomes an empty ritual. So then, should you baptize your grandchild in the sink? See Part 2 next week! 6
Saint Padre Pio of Pietrelcina Join us for a Mass, honoring this wonderful man, Saint Pio. A man, who through the grace of God, has been the vehicle of many blessings and healings around the world. A man who said YES to Jesus when he was asked to bear the wounds of Christ. THURSDAY, September 27th at 7:30 p.m. We will celebrate the 100 th anniversary of Padre Pio s YES to God. Please pass the word. God be with you always and in all ways. Padre Pio News Anniversary of the Visible Stigmata of Padre Pio, September 20, September 20, 2018 Padre Pio, also known as Saint Pio of Pietrelcina (May 25, 1887 September 23, 1968), was a friar, priest, stigmatist, and mystic, now venerated as a saint of the Catholic Church. He was given the name of Pius (or Pio ) when he joined the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin. On September 20, 1918, while hearing confessions, Padre Pio had his first occurrence of the stigmata: He carried the Stigmata for 50 years, until the end of his life. The blood flowing from the stigmata would occasionally smell like flowers, or perfume, or on occasion, like cigars. Many saints throughout the years had this same phenomenon occur. It was called the odor of sanctity. At the time of Padre Pio's death, his body appeared unwounded, with no sign of scarring. To this day Saint Pio s body is incorruptible. Here at St. Bernards we have a Padre Pio Prayer Group dedicated to praying for the sick. We meet on the 1 st and 3 rd Thursdays of the month at 9:30 a.m. in the Marian Room in the Parish Center. We pray together, we talk about Padre Pio, and we talk about other great and wonderful events that God has graced us with. Please join us. If you would like us to pray for you, let us know that as well. Drop a note off to the rectory or you can us at stbernardsppg@gmail.com. Fr. Joe 7
W here jealousy and selfish ambition exist there is the temptation to beset the just one with revilement and torture. This is what Jesus reveals to his disciples: he is to be handed over to men and they will kill him. The disciples staggering response is to squabble among themselves about who was the greatest. Yet, for all our coveting, we do not possess. So Jesus puts his arms around a child. In order to receive this little one we must be pure, peaceable, gentle, full of mercy so much better than fighting and waging war. We have proof of his gentleness in the desire to be gentle that Jesus generates in us. First Reading: The wicked are characterized as believing that life is short, that we were born by chance and we will soon be no more. Therefore, life is always ripe for revelry as we use our strength against the weak. But the response of Wisdom goes on to say that they erred, / / For God formed man to be Liturgy corner TWENTY-FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME September 23, 2018 imperishable, / / the souls of the just are in the hand of God. (2:21-3:1). Responsorial Psalm 54: An appeal to the name of God implied an appeal to God s strength and faithfulness: the essence of the divine character. Second Reading: In today s passage, James returns to the topic of division, both within the individual and in the community. The cause is jealousy and selfish ambition which generated conflicts that James compared to war and murder. Gospel: The death that Jesus was going toward was politically and physically appalling. Religiously, it was considered proof of the person s God-forsakenness. Jesus, seeing the disciples opinions about rank, declares that God is to be found where they least expect or want to go. The just one will suffer, but God will not abandon him. Saints of the Week Wednesday, September 26. Sts. Cosmas and Damian ( 287?) were brothers, possible twins, who practiced medicine without accepting money. They are known in the East as the anargyroi, meaning moneyless ones. As vibrant witnesses to the Christian faith, they were arrested during the Diocletian persecutions. For refusing to renounce their faith and engage in idolatrous worship, they were beheaded and cast into the sea. They are patron saints of twins, confectioners, the sightless and many medical professions (e.g., physicians, nurses, and dentists). Thursday, September 27. St. Vincent de Paul. Priest. St. Vincent de Paul, a French peasant, was ordained in As a parish priest in Paris, he founded a home for foundlings because it upset him to see so many babies abandoned by parents unable to care for them. He founded the Daughters of Charity with Louise de Marillac and the Congregation of the Mission. Friday, September 28. St. Wenceslaus ( ). Most people are familiar with Wenceslaus due to the popular Christmas carol Good King Wenceslaus. Although this ancient carol is not based on historical events, it illustrates the fame King Wenceslaus received because of his heroic life. His attempt to evangelize the Bohemians was not received well by some, including his brother who eventually murdered him. Saturday, September 29. Feast of Sts. Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael. Archangels. We celebrate the feast of three archangels, the great heralds of salvation and defenders against the power of evil. St. Michael is guardian and protector of the Church. His name means who is like God. St. Gabriel, whose name means hero of God, announces that John the Baptist will be born to Elizabeth and Zechariah. He is entrusted with the most important task of revealing to Mary that she will bear the Son of God. Then, there is Raphael, whose name is Hebrew for God has healed. He is mentioned in Tobit 12 as the one standing in the presence of God, and in 1 Enoch (early Jewish writing) as the healer of the earth. 8

During the summer, we received a call from Catholic Charities Immigration Services asking if we might help find temporary housing for a young man from Uganda who has legal refugee status in the United States. One of our families immediately responded, and took this young man into their home, and he has become their fourth son. His resettlement agreement requires that he find a job, and more permanent housing. He has obtained a full-time position in Westbury and has begun evening classes which will lead him to a nursing profession. The young man is 28, has a college degree and speaks English fluently. He is able to pay rent for a bedroom/ bath/kitchen to share. If you think you might be able to help, please call our office. We have met him, and want to do whatever possible to help.
