3 Let s Build! E mail Father Ralph: shepherd@stbernardchurch.org Second Communion At two of our Masses today we re celebrating families who are bringing their children to receive communion for the first time. As exciting as this is, next week they ll be able to receive second communion and then receive Jesus each Sunday after that. Congratulations to the children who are now able to eat the Bread of Life each week for the rest of their lives! Confirmation This week over a hundred of our young people are being confirmed. If one of your neighbors is in this group, be sure to congratulate him/her since these teens have chosen to now belong to the church fully. When they were infants, their parents lovingly chose to bring them to become members of the church family through baptism. Now, with their family s support, they have decided that coming to church with the rest of us as we worship God is what THEY choose for the rest of their lives. Congratulations! Today we officially kick off our Let s Build! drive to raise $1.75 million to renovate and renew the parish campus. The property is rather run down and we want people to feel welcomed and inspired when arriving here. So much of what our parish is doing is very spiritual, caring and helping, yet our buildings and grounds don t match the work of Jesus that we do here. Just as people fix up their kitchens and re-do their driveways so that they can take pride in their homes, now is the time for our church family to fix things up too. The major aspects of the project include: Taking down the leaking tower; putting up a steeple instead Building a larger church lobby Renovating the parking lot (we already have over $600,000 saved from the last campaign for this purpose.) I believe that with everyone s help we can surpass our goal and actually accomplish the additional things in our master plan, including consolidating all the parish offices into the convent building. My confidence comes from the nearly 60 families who have contributed around $500,000 to the campaign -- even before we officially started this weekend! I m thrilled to see such enthusiasm and support for a project that parishioners really want to see happen. Thank you to everyone who already contributed so far. So watch your mail this week and look for the Let s Build! materials. Read through the guide and then consider your gift to this campaign. I m hoping that we have the majority of pledges made by the end of June so that we can have a budget number to give the engineers and architects who can then begin to prepare the plans for the renovation. But please don t wait til June. Once you know how much you could give each year -- we re asking for pledges to be paid over three to five years -- send in your pledge form and we ll add your gift to all the others. I m excited to know how this will all turn out. May I suggest that the easiest way to contribute is by using our Faith Direct online giving service? It s as easy as buying something on Amazon or doing online banking. The Faith Direct link will be listed in the mailing and is also on our website. (And if you give by using your credit card, you ll get points or miles!) Thank you for helping us get this project underway. 3

7 Adult faith formation Spring Bible Study by Diane Vella, Pastoral Associate (Part 1 of a brief summary of some of the topics in this spring s Bible Study class, which is being attended by over 40 parishioners) If you follow the Scripture readings at Church each week, you notice the pattern: the first reading is from the Old Testament, the sung psalm is from the Book of Psalms in the Old Testament, the second reading is usually from a letter in the New Testament ( A reading from the letter of Paul to the Romans ), and the final reading is from one of the four Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke or John. But during the 7 weeks of the Easter season each year, the second reading, instead of coming from one of the letters, comes from a unique book called the Acts of the Apostles. Acts, as it is known, is actually a kind of sequel to the Gospel of Luke. The Gospel reflects on the story of Jesus ministry, death and resurrection, and then Acts picks up where that left off, to tell the story of how he empowered and sent his followers to continue his mission. Acts gives an account of the important people and events in the first 40 years of the spread of Christianity, for the purpose of describing the impact that Jesus and his followers had on the world around them in the first years after his resurrection. Bible, it s important to know the CONTEXT of the book: the author, audience, time period, purpose, type of literature, etc. So here we go with Acts: The book is ascribed to someone named Luke, who may or may not be the Luke who is mentioned a few times in St. Paul s letters as a fellow worker for the Gospel. In any case, Luke is a Gentile meaning a follower of Jesus who was NOT Jewish like Jesus original disciples. This is an important thing to know, because it tells us something about his background and his audience. Luke wrote his book of Acts and his Gospel to inspire his fellow Gentiles to get to know Jesus and his take on Judaism. This was a really important step in Christianity s movement from originally being a part of Judaism to embracing people of all religious backgrounds who encountered the risen Jesus, and were touched and healed or saved by him. Acts is not a history book in the sense that we understand it. It doesn t give a blow-by-blow of what happened in the early Christian community. It s really about giving us a glimpse, or opening a few windows to the impact that the risen Jesus and his band of committed witnesses had on the world around them. Curiously, both Luke s Gospel and Acts begin with an address to a certain Theophilus, claiming that both books were written to him. (Cf. Lk. 1:3 and Acts 1:1) For centuries scholars have tried to identify who this Theophilus might have been, to no avail. But AHA! It just so happens that Theophilus means Lover of God in Greek. Our best guess is that Luke is actually addressing both his books to all lovers of God. And that means you and me! Readers of these occasional Bible columns know that in order to understand any book or passage of the Would you give up 8 Friday nights and 1 Saturday to change your life?? Starts September 21, BE THERE! (For adults, teens; English and Spanish) 7

10 Liturgy Corner Saints and Feast of the Week Monday, April 30. St. Pius V ( ) was a Dominican theologian, elected pope in His primary task as pope was to implement the reforms of the Council of Trent. During his pontificate, seminaries were reformed, a new Missal was published, and the Catechism and Breviary were also revised. Pius retained his white Dominican habit when he became pope; since that time all the popes have worn white. Tuesday, May 1. Today we may celebrate the optional Memorial of St. Joseph the Worker, a relatively new addition to the calendar. It was introduced by Pope Pius XII in 1955, as an alternative to secular May Day celebrations of the worker, which originated in Communist countries and which did more to promote Communist propaganda than to promote the worker. Pope Pius XII urged workers to look to St. Joseph, the carpenter, and to see the dignity inherent in human labor, which could become a source of holiness. Wednesday, May 2. St. Athanasius was a fourthcentury deacon and bishop who lived in Alexandria, Egypt. He is best known for his lifelong struggle against Arianism, or the heretical belief that God created a son who was neither coeternal nor coequal with the Father. Because of his contributions to the faith, he is a doctor of both the Western and Eastern Churches. Thursday, May 3. Feast of Sts. Philip and James. Apostles. Two of the chosen Twelve, Sts. Philip and James (first century), grace the liturgical calendar today. Although few details are known about St. Philip, Scripture portrays him as one who leads others to Christ. He introduces his friend Nathaniel to Jesus, and points to Jesus as the source of nourishment in the feeding of the five thousand and highlights Jesus as the path to the Father in the Last Supper. St. James, the Lesser was gifted with a special appearance of the Risen Christ. Both Sts. Philip and James died as martyrs, shedding their blood for the sake of the Gospel. They are most likely celebrated together because the Basilica of the Twelve Apostles in Rome is dedicated to them.
