3 Surprise! E mail Father Ralph: shepherd@stbernardchurch.org Christmas Pictures When you take Christmas photos this year don t forget to take a photo at St. Bernard s. It certainly is good to take photos of the family Christmas tree, the ugly Christmas sweater, the cookies you baked, the kids opening their gifts, etc. But the heart of Christmas is Jesus. Jesus isn t in a tree or a sweater...he is in the Eucharist and his people gathered for prayer. So when considering what photos to take, be sure to include in your family s photographic record some photos of your family at church. Decades from now, your children and your children s children will see this moment of Christmas and remember again that Jesus is the reason for the season. Of course if you use Facebook or Instagram, etc. post your church photo to inspire all your friends. And your parish priests would like to have a remembrance of this Christmas -- since YOU are their family. So send them your pictures too. What better word could I use to describe Mary s response to the appearance of the angel Gabriel who brought news of God s desire for her to conceive and bear a son who would be the son of God! It is also the reaction Joseph must have had when Mary told him the news. And I suspect it was also the response felt by Mary s parents. The question is, did God stop surprising people once the annunciation was accomplished? No of course not. The gospels tell us of one surprise after another as God comes into the world and Jesus becomes our savior. Of course by now we have heard the story of Jesus so many times that we re no longer surprised, so maybe it would be good to go back to the gospels and pretend we never heard these stories before. In that way we can experience all that comes with divine surprise-- wonder and awe, some fear, some delight, some questions and doubt, and some decision to believe. Christmas is often a time for us to surprise each other. Most likely there will be at least some surprise marriage proposals on Christmas eve. We ll squeal with delight when we see the wonder on someone s face when he or she opens a surprising gift. Do you think that God wants to have joy in surprising us too? I don t think God stopped surprising people 2000 years ago. I myself experience each day as another surprise from God. So why not expect to be surprised by God this Christmas? First, when you get to church for Christmas Mass look around -- and be joyfully surprised at who else you ll see here. (The alternative would to be crabby and annoyed because you can t get your usual seat.) Enter into the Christmas story as if it was the first time you are hearing it and be surprised at how God enters the world in such a poor and fragile way -- not with the power and strength we might presume is proper to God. And here s one other suggestion for surprise. Come to confession tomorrow and be surprised by how a good dose of forgiveness and mercy can restore your soul and your peace of mind. Fr. Joe, Fr. Joy and I will be taking turns throughout Monday afternoon from 3pm to 7pm and then we ll have a penance service that night at 7:30 which will include the opportunity for very brief individual confessions. If it s been a while since you celebrated this Sacrament of Reconciliation, surprise! This is your day! 3

8 Liturgy Corner FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT December 21, 2014 T he Prayer over the Offerings speaks of the Spirit who is always the active transforming agent at work in the liturgy changing bread and wine along with the people into the Body and Blood of Christ. We prepare to celebrate the birth of Christ with the reference to the Incarnation: the Annunciation of the Angel to the Virgin Mary when she conceived our Savior. First Reading: David wants to build a house for God, but instead God responds that he will build the house. God promises David that this house and kingdom will be firm forever. The house of David also means the household, family, or relations of David. David s salvation does not come alone as in individual or even as king. Rather, it comes in community, among people who are in relationship with one another. Responsorial Psalm 89: This Psalm laments over the suffering of the king, possibly because of his defeat and disgrace in battle. Yet in the verses we hear on this Advent Sunday, we hear no laments, but only praise for the God of the covenant. Second Reading: Found at the end of Paul s epistle, these verses are a doxology or a benediction, a hymn of praise and glory to God. This reading echoes connections to the other readings in images of the endless mystery of God to be proclaimed to all nations. In proclaiming this gracious and generous message of covenantal relationship and compassion to all, it will become known to the world that God is indeed faithful. Gospel: In telling Mary s story on this last Sunday, the Church highlights her response to the overwhelming power of God s Spirit. In her acceptance and trust of God s promise, Mary responded as a faithful servant of the line of David. There had been no kings in the Davidic line for over five centuries since the Babylonian exile, yet God is faithful and has found a way to allow the Son of the Most High to inherit David s throne. Mary has responded as a faithful disciple and, because of her willingness to allow God to enter into her very self, God s salvation will be seen upon the earth. Sourcebook, 2014 The O Antiphons of Advent are read with Evening Prayer through December 23. Please see last week s bulletin, page 9, for the O Antiphons. Saint of the Week Tuesday, December 23. St. John of Kanty, Priest. St. John empowered people to bridge the ponderings of the mind with the feelings of the heart. He followed the simple, austere practices of the desert fathers never clinging to material goods, fasting whenever possible, and living in contemplative awareness. 8

The Charitable KIDZ: Thanks to everyone who provided a gift for the members of our families this Christmas season. We requested, received and distributed approximately 250 gifts to our seniors, children and adults who are so very grateful. We are reminded of the great quote of Dorothy Day: An act of love, a voluntary taking on oneself some of the pain of the world, increases the courage and love and hope of all. All who are involved in the work of St. Vincent de Paul and Parish Social Ministry extend to all of our parishioners and their loved ones all the great blessings of this glorious Christmas season! St. Vincent de Paul: Once again, thanks to everyone who has been so generous during the Thanksgiving season. 12 Christmas in the News: Catholics For Freedom of Religion "The threats (to religious freedom) are more subtle (in the West), many people don't even perceive them; they happen bureaucratically, or legislatively, or judicially," said Archbishop William Lori. "Whereas in other parts of the world... it's bloody, violent, overt, but in both cases it's a denial of the rights of conscience and the freedom to relate to one's own God." Oklahoma lawmakers advance "Merry Christmas Bill" allowing traditional greetings. The legislation says that public school students, teachers and staff can greet each other with such traditional phrases as Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, and Happy Holidays. (akdart.com, 2/11/14) Students and parents from Prosper, TX, were upset that student created Christmas cards didn't get delivered to local veterans because of a Veterans Affairs policy against specific religious cards and phrasing. (myfoxdfw.com, 12/24/13) The Twelve Rules of Christmas (continued) 9. Government entities may erect and maintain celebrations of the Christmas holiday, such as Christmas trees and Christmas light displays, and may include crèches in their displays Neither public nor private employers may prevent employees from decorating their offices for Christmas, playing Christmas music, or wearing clothing related to Christmas Public or private employees whose sincerely held religious beliefs require they not work on Christmas must be reasonably accommodated by their employers Government recognition of Christmas as a public holiday and granting government employees a paid holiday for Christmas does not violate the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment.
