3 Of Hearts and Ashes E mail Father Ralph: shepherd@stbernardchurch.org Prayers this Weekend I m not at the parish this weekend as I am doing my annual priest presentation on the Retrouvaille Weekend. As you may know Retrouvaille (a French word meaning re-discovery ) is a weekend program for couples whose marriages are experiences some form of distress. Please pray for me and the couples who are presenting with me as well as the couples attending. For more information on upcoming weekends: Confirmation Retreats For the next two Saturdays, young people in our parish who are preparing for Confirmation will be having a retreat. Toward the end of the retreat day, they ll be joined by their sponsors and will be attending the 5pm Saturday Mass together. Please keep these candidates and their families in your prayers and get ready to squeeze in the pew a little more to make room at Saturday night Mass. Here s a heads-up for all you love-birds out there: Ash Wednesday falls on February 14th this year -- and that s also traditionally St Valentine s Day. So the practices of these two days conflict in great ways. Ash Wednesday: a day of fasting. Valentine s Day: a feast of a romantic dinner. Ash Wednesday: giving up something. Valentine s Day: Gift of chocolate. Ash Wednesday: no eating meat. Valentine s Day: that dinner? Meat on the menu. So... what are Catholic lovers to do? I was recently asked if the church was giving dispensations on Ash Wednesday so people didn t have to keep the traditions of Ash Wednesday. The quick answer? No. We invite people to enter a deep time of fasting, prayer and good works each Lent and it would be odd to say: this year don t bother because Ash Wednesday falls on February 14th. It s only a sacrifice if you sacrifice something. People who are Valentines Day afficionados will need to find a creative response to this confluence of dates. Perhaps they ll do their Valentining the night before as part of Mardi Gras. Perhaps they ll use this day of love to grow together in the love of God by coming to church together and having a simple meal together. Love doesn t have to be extravagant when people do simple things with intentional care. I d be interested in hearing from people about your plans for this special day. How will you share love with the beloved and at the same time enter the holy season of Lent? How do you plan on making this work for you? You could me: shepherd@stbernardchurch.org and I can share some of the ideas in the upcoming weeks. I ll close with this thought: Lent is not primarily about deprivation, but rather it s about sacrificial love. Perhaps the best way to enter into the forty days is to think about how to be more loving to the significant people in our lives. We can give up nagging and criticism; we can choose to do helping acts that show we really care about those we love; we can take time to communicate better and we can plan on coming to church each week pray with and for the ones we love. 3

4 PARISH NEWS A CHILDREN'S COAT DRIVE will be held the morning of January 21 st at all Masses. Our level 7 students will be collecting new, cleaned and gently used coats for children before and after all the Masses for morning only. (not the 5:30pm Sunday Mass ). In our unusually cold winter, all donations will be greatly appreciated and then forwarded to the Parish Social Ministry Office. Thank you for thinking of others. Mid-Week Mid-Morning Book Discussion The first of his family to go to college, Anil Patel carries the weight of tradition and his family s expectations when he leaves his tiny Indian village to begin a medical residency in America. This international story wrestles with dilemmas faced by many immigrants who come here to fulfill their dreams. At the same time, the author explores the perils of being a woman in India, interweaving the tale of Anil s childhood friend Leena, who lives a traditional rural life back home. Join your fellow parishioners on Wednesday February 7 at 10 AM in the Parish Center for an informal discussion of best-selling author Shilpi Somaya Gowda s The Golden Son. For more information please contact Wally Rodier at or wrodi@verizon.net. Catholic Daughters News Sunday, February 4 CDA hosts Hospitality, Parish Center at St. Bernard s. 6 ADULT FAITH FORMATION by Diane Vella, Pastoral Associate The latest in an occasional column on basic questions of Catholic faith. Do you have a topic you d like addressed? Call or Diane at dvella@stbernardchurch.org or , ext I ve been getting the question a lot lately: Is the Bible really TRUE? It may have been prompted by something they heard somewhere, or simply by their own healthy skepticism. Or by a realization that they never learned anything about the Bible and specifically how the Catholic Church understands it. Most recently, the question came from some VERY SURPRISED young parents in a discussion group, who practically fell off their chairs when in a discussion of another topic I told them that the Catholic Church does not take the stories of the creation of the world in the Bible (there are two completely different ones) as literal, scientific fact. There is way too much to say about this whole idea of truth in the Bible to get into it in this short column, not to mention how the Church understands those creation stories. (You know the ones God creates the whole universe in 6 days? God creates Eve out of Adam s rib? They eat an apple except the Bible never mentions an apple and get kicked out of paradise?) Here I can just say this: The Bible is always true, but it is not always factual. Who says? Catholic Bible scholars (including priests and bishops) and every Pope starting with Pope Pius XII in How come some Catholics never heard that? Well, that s complicated. But it s at least partially because most Catholics don t pursue religious education beyond childhood, and never get to that chapter, so to speak. But adults have LOTS of opportunities to learn this stuff here at St. Bernard s; we offer Bible study, intro and advanced, all the time in many different formats, including a one-shot intro that can be done anytime, anywhere, with just 6 interested people. Just let me know; I ll be there! A priest friend of mine says the Bible is like Irish stories: All are true. Some are factual. Some more musings on this next week maybe. Maybe it s Time To Belong Join the journey to adult faith! Going to church but not baptized? Baptized, going to a Catholic church, but not Catholic? Baptized Catholic, going to church, but not confirmed in the faith? Name: Phone: Best time to call: Place form in collection basket, or contact Diane Vella: or dvella@stbernardchurch.org 6

8 LITURGY CORNER THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME January 21, 2018 The Collect asks that God may direct our actions so that in the name of your beloved Son / we may abound in good works. First Reading: Jonah s prophetic task was not easy. No wonder he refused it the first time God called. In today s readings the Lord s word comes to Jonah for a second time, this time after the Lord rescued Jonah from the belly of the big fish by having the fish spew Jonah out onto the seashore. Jonah s calls the people of Nineveh to repentance based on his personal experience of God s mercy and opportunity to live a new life in God. God acknowledges the conversion of the Ninevites and God himself repented of the evil that he would have brought upon them. Responsorial Psalm 25 calls upon the Lord to teach us and instruct us in divine ways. The verses are the psalmist s prayer and ours that the Lord not only make those ways known to us, but that the Lord will guide us, have compassion on us when we stray. Second Reading: This brief passage is Paul s advice to the Corinthians about how to live in the interim before Christ comes again in Glory. Paul believes that the Second Coming of Christ is imminent, so he conveys his instructions with a sense of urgency. Christians are to live in the knowledge of the Second Coming for this world is passing away. What lasts eternally is God s grace in the present and active in the Risen Christ, now alive in the hearts of those who believe. When Christians live in this knowledge, then their worldly actions will appear different than those who do not await the Lord. Gospel: Jesus proclamation to repent and believe in the Gospel parallels Jonah s call to the Ninevites to repent. What is unique is Jesus proclamation is the preface to his announcement in which he states, This is the time of fulfillment. Through our reading of the Gospel according to Mark, we, along with the disciples, will come to know that in Jesus very person as the Son of Man who saves is fulfillment of all God s promises. Without fully knowing this, Simon and Andrew respond to Jesus call to come after him and become fish for other followers. James and his brother John are the next to trust in the possibilities of what following Jesus could bring. Special Day of Prayer and Saints of the Week Monday, January 22. Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children. On this day, the Church gives us prayers rooted in hope as the United States mourns the loss of millions of lives by abortion. In the Mass for Peace and Justice, we pray that all governments, especially our own, seek a truly just society, one in which the common good of all people, including the most vulnerable, is sought. We should remember that there may be members of our parish who are still in the process of reconciling with God and the Church because they have had an abortion and remember them in our prayers. Wednesday, January 24. St. Francis de Sales. Bishop and Doctor of the Church. St. Francis contributed immensely to the development of spirituality through the publication of his book, An Introduction to the Devout Life. Living at a time when manuals on spirituality were written primarily for clerics and members of religious orders, St. Francis book provided a practical path to holiness for people from all states of life. Thursday, January 25. Feast of the Conversion of St. Paul the Apostle. Today s feast celebrates God s triumph, even in the most unlikely circumstances. Before Paul meets the Risen Lord on the Road to Damascus, he is Saul, dedicated to viciously persecuting the followers of Jesus Christ. Imagine yourself among those early Christians, and hearing that Saul, one of the most feared enemies of your community, has encountered the Lord and changed his life entirely to serve him from then on. The conversion of Paul is proof that no one is too far beyond the call of the Lord to follow, and that in Christ, change for the better is always possible. Children: In what way do you think you can be a better follower of Jesus? From Catholics For Freedom of Religion- CFFR Why Religious Freedom Matters: As a New Year begins, America finds itself at a tipping point, with the stakes for religious freedom at an alltime high. Many cases are working their way through the courts while some will be heard by the U.S. Supreme Court. These cases involve prayer, military religious rights, faith-based business owners, and houses of worship Unfortunately, many cases don't even make it to the court system since citizens will often capitulate to intimidation out of ignorance of their First Amendment protections, fear of job or societal repercussions, or legal costs (many law firms defend religious freedom pro-bono.) A few of many examples: At two different Long Island, NY, public schools students were made to turn their t-shirts inside out to hide the Bible verses on the shirts. A 33-year Air Force veteran, Oscar Rodriquez, was forcibly removed from a private retirement ceremony at a California airbase because he planned to say the word "God" in his speech. A Florida agency banned two Christian schools from using a stadium speaker system to pray before a championship game, even though this was common practice. An Oregon family-owned bakery is being fined $135,000 for declining - on religious grounds - to create a custom cake for a same-sex wedding. The government says it also wants to "rehabilitate" their religious views. (CFFR, Students of Faith lessons, 2017; firstliberty.org, 12/28/17; ncregister.com, 6/22/12; thf_media.s3.amazonnews) "The liberty enjoyed by the People of these States, of worshiping Almighty God agreeable to their Consciences, is not only among the choicest of their Blessings, but also of their Rights." As in the past, our young people will be collecting your donations in their soup pots at each of the masses on Super Bowl Sunday. We are thinking that this is the 11 th or 12 th year that we have participated, and have raised close to, if not more than, $50,000 which has gone to hurricane relief (Katrina and Sandy,) Catholic Charities of Rockville Centre, Bethany House, El Salvador, Rwanda and the Congo, Fr. Patrick s wells in Nigeria, the I.N.N, among others. We hope that we will be as successful as we have been in the past, in raising funds for these wonderful charities! Each year, students and employees from Molloy College travel to the Big Laurel Learning Center in Kermit, West Virginia to run a camp for boys in the area for one week. Kermit continues to be one of the poorest rural areas in the nation. Most of the boys who come to the camp live in extreme poverty. Although they go to school, they struggle with reading and writing. If they graduate from high school, very few go to college. The Big Laurel Learning Center is run by two religious sisters, Sister Kathy O Hagan and Sister Gretchen Shaffer. Besides this camp, the sisters provide programs for the people in the area throughout the year. In addition, Molloy holds fundraisers to raise money to give to the sisters. All of the money raised goes directly to the people. It is an amazing experience that we are so blessed to part of! Thank you again for choosing Molloy College and this very special trip! God bless! Sister Diane Capuano, OP Associate Director of Campus Ministries at Molloy College, Rockville Centre, NY Thank you! Many thanks to everyone who contributed to our collection for Levittown Puerto Rico. As soon as we have a total, we will let you know! Thanks from Levittown, Beyond! 12
