3 clairvaux chronicle Next week: is Hospitality Sunday February 6 At all Masses, St. Bernard s will thank and bless all married couples for their contributions to our community One Faith, One Hope, Many Gifts This weekend we launch the Catholic Ministries Appeal for 2011 here at St. Bernard s. Once again we have had another outstanding year in 2010 by going over our goal of $93,193 by some 124%. What that has meant in terms of rebate from the diocese is a total of over $35,000. You might think of it as our best fund-raiser. At the same time the major portion of what has been contributed goes to support the various ministries of our diocese including Catholic Charities, education, formation, pastoral outreach, and the seminary. I mention the seminary in particular because we have seen the results of seminary formation with the ordination in 2009 of Fr. Mike Bartholomew who comes from St. Bernard s Parish. Most of the priests of the diocese including myself, Fr. Chris, and Msgr. Graham studied at our seminary in Huntington. It is a rare thing for an individual diocese to have its own seminary. It is supported in part by the ministries appeal. Beyond the seminary there are hundreds of thousands who benefit directly and indirectly from the appeal each year. Please invite anyone you know who may be interested! On Thursday, February 3, 2011, the feast of St. Blaise, throats will be blessed after the 7:00 am and 9:00 am Masses For more information regarding The Catholic Ministries Appeal turn to page 11. Despite these hard economic times, it is impressive to see how St. Bernard s Parish continues to reach our goal and exceed it. It is a tribute to the 441 families who contributed to the appeal last year. When we speak of our theme of gifted, engaged, and growing it is encouraging to see how parish families are so willing to share their financial gifts in a spirit of gratitude for the blessings God has given to them. Once again I invite each parish family to share in this important undertaking. You have received or will receive a letter from Bishop Murphy which provides a convenient way to make a pledge or an initial contribution. Simply fill out the information requested and return it directly to the diocese. Thank you for making St. Bernard s one of the stars of the appeal. I trust that it will be another outstanding year for the parish. New President for St. Vincent de Paul This year the St. Vincent de Paul Conference of St. Bernard s will have a new president in the person of Pat Rosalia. After 6 years of service as president, Al Gillis will be stepping down but will continue as an active member of the conference. We are very grateful to Al for his many years of service, his dedication, and his deep concern for the poor and the needy. We welcome Pat and pray that she and all the members of the conference will continue to do great work for those most in need. 3

Goal 3: To increase support and recognition of engaged parishioners LAST CHANCE TO SUBMIT NOMINATIONS for our FIRST ANNUAL SPIRIT OF ST. BERNARD AWARD! This award will be given annually to a parishioner or parishioners who have responded exceptionally to their baptismal call to build up the Kingdom of God in the parish of Saint Bernard, especially in the year just completed. These men and women have followed the call of Christ and participated in the mission of the parish by praying and worshipping, educating others in the faith, assisting those in need, working for justice in the world. They have shown their devotion to the Holy Father, the Diocese, and the Parish through their commitment to the corporal and spiritual works of mercy. Qualifications for nominees are as follows: Registered parishioners of Saint Bernard s who participate regularly in Sunday Eucharist and the sacraments.. Members of a formal parish organization or group, or may work informally. Consideration is to be given to those whose work is seen by the parish as well as those who work behind the scenes. Nominees cannot be prior recipients of the Diocesan Saint Agnes Medal. PLEASE SUBMIT FORMAL LETTERS OF NOMINATION DETAILING HOW THE NOMINEE/S MEETS THE ABOVE QUALIFICATIONS TO FATHER JERRY NO LATER THAN TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 1,

7 Gifted, engaged, growing St. BErnarD S pastoral plan Goal #2: To motivate and equip engaged parishioners to reach out and invite others to become engaged. Do you know a young adult (20 s-40 s) who would like to connect more deeply with their Catholic faith? (maybe even you!!) Goal #3: To increase support and recognition of engaged parishioners Do you have the time and talent to facilitate a small faith-sharing group for five weeks this Lent? Then do what you do best at St. Bernard s! If you are an experienced small group facilitator, or if God gave you the talent to listen and gently encourage others to share faith, you may be able to be trained to facilitate a group in the parish. AWAKENING FAITH is a learning/discussion program just for them or you! Why Awakening Faith? Because you re a grown-up and you need a grown-up faith Because you need support in living the Christian life Because you have kids Because you need spirituality and community in this crazy world 6 Saturday mornings beginning March 5 9:00 10:15 a.m. in the school or 5 Tuesday evenings beginning March 15 7:30 9:00 p.m. in the parish center See and the Awakening Faith link on the home page at Not a facilitator type?? Why not take a step and join a faith-sharing group this Lent? Faith-sharing groups are small groups of six to eight people who meet together on a weekly basis during Lent to share their experience of faith with one another. A facilitator gently guides the conversation and sharing, and leads prayer. This year s faith sharing process will center on the experience of the Eucharist in our lives. Never joined a group before?? Think about it for this Lent. Sign-ups begin in February; watch the parish bulletin and website For information or sign-ups on any Gifted, Engaged, and Growing activity, contact Diane Vella at or dvella@stbernardslevittown.org. 7

8 Liturgy corner Edited by Father Chris Costigan Belonging More Deeply: Engaging and Growing in the Eucharist Week Three: The Liturgy of the Word and Sacred Scripture Last week as a parish we reflected on our preparation for Mass and on the Entrance and Introductory Rites. This week our focus moves to the Liturgy of the Word and the use of Sacred Scripture in the liturgy. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM) states: The main part of the Liturgy of the Word is made up of the readings from Sacred Scripture together with the chants occurring between them. The homily, Profession of Faith, and Prayer of the Faithful, however, develop and conclude this part of the Mass. For in the readings, as explained by the homily, God speaks to his people, opening up to them the mystery of redemption and salvation and offering them spiritual nourishment; and Christ himself is present in the midst of the faithful through his word. By their silence and singing the people make God's word their own, and they also affirm their adherence to it by means of the Profession of Faith. Finally, having been nourished by it, they pour out their petitions in the Prayer of the Faithful for the needs of the entire Church and for the salvation of the whole world. (55) As you can see the, Liturgy of the Word is made up of many parts, not just the specific readings from the Bible read at each Mass. The readings at Sunday Mass are chosen according to a three-year cycle for most of the liturgical year. This year we are in cycle "A" and will hear mostly from the Gospel of Matthew as we proceed through the year. Cycle "B" focuses on the Gospel of Mark, and during the summer we hear from the Gospel of John, specifically the Bread of Life Discourse. Year "C" features the Gospel of Luke. Some feasts and solemnities have different readings for each cycle, whereas others have the same readings year after year. The first reading at Sunday Mass is normally from the Old Testament and is chosen because it corresponds to the Gospel reading. The psalm which is normally sung in a responsorial fashion in most parishes is taken from the Book of Psalms, and occasionally from a canticle from another book of the Bible (such as the Magnificat found in the Gospel of Luke). The psalm is part of Scripture! It is not just a musical interlude between readings. That is why it is never appropriate to substitute a song, even a song based on Scripture. The second reading at Sunday Mass is from one of the New Testament epistles, or letters (usually Saint Paul). The reading is chosen independent of the Gospel and first reading, which is why it doesn't seem to fit into the theme many times. The epistles are generally read in continuation from week to week. So, if you come every Sunday you will hear the rest of the letter! The homily is an important part of the Liturgy of the Word and is required every Sunday and Holy Day of Obligation. The GIRM states that "it should be an exposition of some aspect of the readings from Sacred Scripture or of another text from the Ordinary or from the Proper of the Mass of the day and should take into account both the mystery being celebrated and the particular needs of the listeners" (65). Also included in the Liturgy of the Word is the Creed or Profession Faith and the Universal Prayer (Intercessions of Prayer of the Faithful). Another important part of the Liturgy of the Word is silence between the readings and after the homily to reflect on the Word of God. Sacred Scripture is not limited to the Liturgy of the Word! Scripture is always present in the Mass. The sign of the Cross and priest's greeting at the beginning of Mass come right from the Bible, as do many of the prayers of both the priest and people. Some obvious examples include the Institution Narrative in the Eucharistic Prayer, the Sanctus (Holy Holy Holy), the Lord's Prayer, the Lamb of God both in the Agnus Dei chant and the invitation to communion. Even our response to the invitation to Communion (Lord I am not worthy...) is taken from the prayer of the centurion. As you come to Mass, listen to the prayer said by the priest and pay attention to the words you say. You will soon see just how much Sacred Scripture is contained in the words of the liturgy! 8

9 Parish social ministry Sr. Christine Sammons, O.P., St. Vincent de Paul: Our St. Bernard s Conference of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul has been ministering to the Levittown community since The men and women of our Conference are part of an international organization which seeks, in a spirit of justice and charity, and by person-to-person involvement, to be present to those who are suffering. For the past 6+ years, Al Gillis has served as president, and we thank him for his dedication and leadership. He has contributed a great deal of time and energy to the Conference, and for that we are most grateful. The members of the Conference have chosen Patricia Rosalia as their new president. The other officers chosen are: Ken Hall, Pat Ryan, Marie Wagner and Jim O Connor. As always, our local St. Vincent de Paul Society continues to rely on the financial support of our parishioners through your direct monetary donations to the poor boxes, and provisions for our pantry. The members of the Society ask for your prayerful support as they minister along with Parish Social Ministry to meet the needs of our community. Thanks to everyone who helps with food and other necessities for our pantry. We are most grateful for everything dropped off in church and our office. This week our pantry needs include: cereal (hot and cold), canned meat and fish (especially tuna), coffee and tea, dessert mixes, canned fruit, tomato products of all kinds, hearty soups. In addition, we can always use paper towels and toilet tissue, as well as tissues and napkins. Toiletries of all kinds and Pampers and wipes for our little ones are always welcome! the SoupEr Bowl of CarInG: Our Charitable KIDZ, their parents and friends will be one of almost 15,000 groups throughout the country participating in the Souper Bowl of Caring next weekend. After each Mass on February 5 th and 6 th, our young people will be outside of church with their soup pots to receive your loose change, bills and checks (made out to Parish Social Ministry). We are collecting for a group called Amahoro, which means peace in the Rwandan language. One member of the group is Liz Gannon Graydon, the daughter of Joe Gannon of our parish. She and six of her friends have visited villages, built since the Rwandan genocide, and are helping provide for education and basic needs of living for some of the survivors of the genocide with resulted in 800,000 deaths in Every cent of your donations will be given directly to Amahoro to further their work. To learn more about the group, check out their excellent website: whatbetterlookslike.com which was created by Liz and her husband Rob Graydon. This is the fourth year we have participated in this event, and our teens have raised over $10,000. Anyone wishing to participate in the Souper Bowl of Caring may contact Carol and Ted Blach at charitablekidz@aol.com. We thank you in advance for your participation! Meals-on-Wheels: Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, an extraordinary team of men and women deliver 25 meals to the frail elderly members of our community. If you are in a position to be on call to deliver a meal or two after the 9:00 Mass, please call our office. From time to time we need a substitute driver, and would be happy to add your name to our list. It is a very wonderful ministry and corporal work of mercy. 9
