3 On the Road E mail Father Ralph: shepherd@stbernardchurch.org Thanks for Giving Thank you to all who came to St. Bernard's Winter Blood Drive. We provided 89 total units of blood. Lives were saved and enriched because of your life-giving act. NCAA Men s Bracket Challenge Lots of parishioners are using our online electronic giving service (Faith Direct) to make their contributions. Faith Direct has a contest in which parishes can win cash if your NCAA bracket finishes in the top three. It costs nothing to enter. To see how this works go to: bracketchallenge The challenge begins on March 15th but you can pre-register. Our parish code is: NY272 And if you don t use Faith Direct to make your regular contributions to support our parish, why not consider doing this now? It makes giving modern, convenient, easy and secure. This weekend you ll encounter my friend Father Frank Desiano who is leading our Lenten Mission this year. I ve known Father Frank since I was in college and he was the vocation director for the Paulist Fathers. Despite his best efforts to entice me to join the Paulists, I opted instead to become a diocesan priest but over the years our conversations and visits have inspired and sustained me in my vocation. As I write this on Wednesday, Father Frank, who currently lives in Washington DC, is in Camden, NJ and headed for Detroit tonight, followed by a stop off in Philadelphia before he comes to spend four days with us. St. Paul travelled a lot and Father Frank, as a Paulist Father, has picked up St. Paul s habits in spreading the Good News of Jesus as he invites people to become disciples of Jesus. It might be tempting to stay warm at home during the Lent Mission which runs each night Sunday through Wednesday at 7:30pm so I asked Father Frank to give a few reasons why you might avoid that temptation and instead come to church -- and bring someone with you. Here s what he said: 1. You said you d do something for Lent, right? 2. A New York City preacher always tells it straight. (Note: Fr Frank is originally from NYC.) 3. Some of the stories will have you rolling in the pews. 4. We have to renew our experience of parish and community. 5. We have to renew our experience of Jesus... and being his disciple So I hope you ll come on over for some thought-provoking, inspirational evenings -- if you can t come each night, come to which ever evenings you can attend. As we consider the contemporary challenges of living in Levittown, we know that Jesus is the answer to the situations we face and the more of us who can walk together toward Jesus during this Mission, the easier it will be for us to make a positive difference. After all, with faith, hope and love, the people of St. Bernard s parish family are on a mission to live and share the Gospel of Jesus in the Levittown community and beyond. Let s figure out how to do this together. 3

8 Liturgy Corner THE THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT March 8, 2015 First Reading: Today s readings continue the reflections begun last Sunday. Exodus spells out the covenant law which Moses received on Mount Sinai, this episode explaining some of the reasons and significance of Moses appearance with Jesus on the Mount of Transfiguration. The covenant law sets out the road we are to follow across life s desert as we seek to grow into the holiness into which we are baptized in Christ, the new covenant. Responsorial Psalm 19: This psalm provides a glorious affirmation of the gift of the law of the Lord. It is a love song that cherishes the law of the Lord. The law of the Lord is perfect, trustworthy, right, clear, pure, and true. It is the law that forms God s people and draws them near. It is the law that defines this newly established covenant. Second Reading: We proclaim Christ crucified a stumbling block to many, but to those who are called, the wisdom of God. In Luke s account of the Transfiguration, Moses and Elijah converse with Jesus about his exodus, the passage through death to life we are preparing to celebrate and live through the Easter sacraments of Baptism and Eucharist. To celebrate, never mind participate in, a death, and such a cruel death, seems utterly senseless to anyone who has not known Christ and the power of his Cross. We walk in the light of a wisdom that would be folly without hope in the Resurrection, our ultimate goal. Gospel: On the Mount of Transfiguration, the disciples caught a glimpse of the fire that burns in the depth of the mystery of Christ. From Moses first encounter with God in the bush that burned in Horeb, God accompanied his people through the desert in a fiery cloud that eventually filled the Holy of Holies in the Jerusalem Temple. Jesus, in whom the fire still burns, claims to be the new Temple, no longer susceptible to destruction by enemies, even on the Cross, but still and forever present with God s people. Saints of the Week Monday, March 9. St. Frances of Rome. St. Frances ( ) was born in Rome to wealthy parents. Although she wanted to enter a monastery, her parents married her off to Lorenzo Ponziano, commander of the papal troops in Rome. It was a happy marriage that lasted 40 years. Her husband was often away at war, and Frances spent her time praying, visiting the poor, and caring for the sick. Eventually, her example inspired other wealthy women to do the same. Frances founded a lay congregation of Benedictine Oblates now known as Oblates of St. Frances of Rome. Sourcebook 2015 Let Jesus Lead the Way, by Joseph Sica Our parish Lenten Reader March 8 - The power of our words. Many Samaritans from that city believed in him because of the woman s testimony. John 4:39 Words can conjure up powerful emotions. They can hurt or heal, build up or tear down, discourage or inspire. Words can make us laugh or cry, bring comfort or curse. Once said, words can never be taken back. TAKEAWAY ROUTE: When was the last time you actually thought about what you say? It s time to seriously do a word-check and recreate a new language of love, positivity, gratitude, and humility. TURN-IT-OVER ROUTE: Jesus, may my words always be gentle, helping others to heal and grow. Amen. 8

The Pope condemned "plotters of terrorism.." (newsmax.com, 9/13/14) Since 1970, Open Doors has been monitoring persecution of Christians worldwide through the International Institute of Religious Freedom with academics dedicated to studying the religious liberty of Christians. ( doors.org/) China: Ranked #29 out of the 100 countries where Christians face the most persecution, the communist Chinese government aims to control all religious activities. The state has declared some churches "evil cults" and has started a program to eradicate them. The Roman Catholic Church is illegal and the state is actively fighting against it. Mexico: Ranked #38 in the world facing the most persecution, Mexico's 120 million Christians (population 125 million), are victims of organized crime and the drug cartels. These violent groups target Christians because churches are revenue centers (extortions) and because churches support programs for the rehabilitation of drug addicts and alcoholics. Overall, 26,500 people immigrated to Israel in 2014, a 32% spike over ( 2/16/15; cnn.com, 2/16/15) FBI statistics on hate crimes committed in America in 2012 reveal that 60% of religious based hate crimes were against Jews.
