The Sign of the Trinity E mail Father Ralph: shepherd@stbernardchurch.org Parking & Tower This past week I received an initial report concerning the renovation/reconfiguration of the parking lot and the repair of the church tower from the engineering/ architect firm of San Fanandre Justin Architects PC. While the tower is structurally sound (it s not going to fall down anytime in the foreseeable future), there are very considerable defects that will need to be fixed. We discussed a number of possible remedies and I asked them to prepare a presentation for the parish that would not only include design suggestions, but also costs. At this time there were no cost estimates and any discernment with the parish will need to have at least rough estimates of what the different options would cost. Once I get that report, I plan on setting up some town meetings for people to meet the architects and see a presentation on both the tower options and the recommendations for the parking plans. She lay in a hospital bed, unresponsive. She didn t talk and didn t seem to see any of the nurses or family members who hovered over her. It was time, they thought, to call for the priest to offer prayers, last rites. So there I was. And as I started to pray, In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, the woman in the bed made the sign of the cross. Her family gasped -- this was the first sign of consciousness she had shown in weeks. I ve encountered this scene quite a few times in my life. There is something about the sign of the cross that etches itself into the soul of those who pray it so that even when most things shut down, it is still an integral part of who we are. So on this Feast of the Most Holy Trinity I invite you to consider this simple yet profound prayer that honors and connects us to the one God who is three persons. We see people make the sign of the cross -- sometimes before trying to shoot a foul shot in basketball, sometimes after making a little joke or saying an obvious little lie (as if to say they want God s pardon for what they just said). Some still make the sign of the cross when traveling past a church building or before entering a pew. And we start our prayers before meals, our prayers at bedtime and certainly our prayers at Mass with this sign. It can be so common that we forget that we re doing it. When I teach children to pray the sign of the cross I slow it down and suggest that when they touch their forehead, they are asking the Father to fill their minds with wisdom. When they touch the center of their body, they are asking Jesus, the Son, to fill their hearts with love. And then as they reach across from shoulder to shoulder to consider that the Holy Spirit hugs them with a holy embrace. Try making the sign of the cross slowly and with these divine encounters in mind. Many times we tell people that the Holy Trinity is a mystery, not fully explainable with words. Yet this simple and profound action of blessing ourselves with the Trinity communicates the mystery without words. We feel both the oneness of God and yet the diversity of the persons of God as we move through this prayer. This week as we celebrate the Feast of the Trinity let us be very mindful when we make the sign of the cross. 3

YEAR OF MERCY OCT NOV Mercy is Our Mission! Be merciful as God is merciful Luke 6:36 We will read and reflect on how we can put MERCY into practice in every day life! 3 Tues. 7:30 p.m. starts June 7 OR 3 Wed. 10 a.m. starts June 8, Parish Center Instructor: Diane Vella, Pastoral Associate Words of MERCY from Pope Francis:...Encourage everyone to be a sign of mercy... Over the course of the next year we will feature some thoughts from one of Pope Francis talks, homilies or writings. We invite you to think, talk and pray about what it might be saying to you and to our parish about our MISSION as followers of Jesus Christ as we seek with faith, hope and love to bring the Gospel to the Levittown community and beyond. This Exhortation [The Joy of Love On Love in the Family] is especially timely in this Jubilee Year of Mercy.... It seeks to encourage everyone to be a sign of mercy and closeness wherever family life remains imperfect or lacks peace and joy. From Pope Francis Apostolic Exhortation The Joy of Love, March 19, 2016 How is your family life - whatever your family is imperfect or lacking peace and joy? What is one thing that YOU can do to address that imperfection or lacking? How can you be a sign of mercy and closeness in difficult family situations? 6
ADULT FAITH FORMATION What you didn t know about... Diane Vella, Pastoral Associate You may have noticed that ever since the first Sunday of Advent back in December, we ve been hearing mostly from the Gospel of Luke on Sundays at Mass. This it s because it s Year C - Luke s year - of the 3-year cycle of Gospel readings that Catholics and many other Christians use on Sundays. About 50 parishioners have just concluded Part II of a 12-week Bible Study course on the Gospel of Luke. Here s just a smattering of things they learned about the Gospel of Luke: Luke WASN T a follower of Jesus before his resurrection. Luke s Gospel (like the others) were NOT written when Jesus was doing his ministry. Luke s was written about 50 years after Jesus resurrection. Luke s is the ONLY one of the 4 Gospels that tells us the story of Jesus born in a stable in Bethlehem. Luke s Gospel is more sensitive to and inclusive of WOMEN disciples than are the other Gospels. Luke s is the ONLY Gospel that tells us such familiar stories of Jesus as the Parable of the Good Samaritan, the Prodigal Son, and the story of Jesus encounter with the tree-climber Zacchaeus. INTERESTED IN LEARNING MORE ABOUT THIS GOSPEL AND THE BIBLE IN GENERAL? Get this book in print or digital format: Luke for Everyone, by N.T. Wright. The people loved it! Think about joining Bible Study when it continues in the fall! Celebrating God s Good Creation with Prayer, Song and Reflection A Spring Retreat Day for Women Friday, June 3, 9:30 to 3:00 p.m. Cenacle Retreat Center, Ronkonkoma $55 per person, includes morning coffee and lunch Our leader will be Pat Chapin, Director of Faith Formation at St. Thomas More in Hauppauge. Pat is a retreat leader who also leads spiritual pilgrimages to holy places in the world. As a working woman, mother and grandmother, Pat guides others to find God at home, at work, and in God s good creation. Return with $55 payment to St. Bernard s Church to Parish Office, Attn: Diane Vella by May 27 Name: Phone: I will drive/get my own ride I would like a ride I can provide a ride for people 7
I n the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Christians who use this phrase repeatedly could easily lose sight of the powerful mystery it expresses. Today, Trinity Sunday, the Scriptures call for reflection on this central belief of Christianity: the Trinity. One of the greatest gifts of the Christian faith is the dogma of the triune God: God is three (tri) in one (une). Christians name God as a Trinity of Father, Son, and Spirit, but only in light of Jesus Christ does such language and insight fully emerge. First Reading: Wisdom, personified as a woman present with God before the creation of the world, plays a great part in helping to establish the order and beauty of all creation. God s wisdom suffuse the universe with order and beauty, God s wisdom is present in and manifested through all creation, establishing both the extent and the limits that God desired for all creation. Ultimately, Proverbs affirms that God s wisdom found great delight in the company of all creation, most especially the human race. The Spirit, understood as the wisdom of God, is the fullness and presence of God dwelling with all of creation, delighting especially in the intimate relationship with all humanity. Liturgy Corner SOLEMNITY OF THE MOST HOLY TRINITY May 22, 2016 Responsorial Psalm 8: The psalm revels in God s presence and power evident in all of creation, and the awesome grace and responsibility that God has entrusted to human beings. Second Reading: Paul speaks of the Trinitarian presence of God in our lives by focusing first on God justifying and restoring us to intimate covenant relationship in Christ. Our response in faith enables us to access God s peace and grace leading us to boast only in God s glory. We boast both in good times and in bad, for, through faith, all things draw us near to God s love which has been poured out into our hearts in and through the gift of the Spirit which has been given to us. Such Trinitarian love is beyond our imagining and yet is God s gift to all humanity freely, intimately, and completely. Gospel: Jesus, before departing from his disciples, comforts them by promising the gift of the Spirit of truth who will enlighten them on all that Jesus said and did while he was with them. The Spirit will guide and enlighten them on those things they currently find difficult to bear. All that the Father has given to Jesus will be made clear and understandable through the Spirit that will be given to them. We are a community intimately united to God through Christ by the work of the Spirit gifted to us. Today we celebrate this rich love relationship which is ours in our Trinitarian God. Saints of the Week Wednesday, May 25. Optional Memorials. Venerable Bede ( ) was a Benedictine monk at the Abbey of Jarrow in England. He devoted his life to scholarly pursuits, including the study of Scripture, the composition of commentaries based on the ideas of Church Fathers, and extensive research and writing regarding the history of the Church in England. He is credited with educating over 600 monks and popularizing the use of AD (anno Domini in the year of our Lord) to refer to the Christian era. St. Gregory VII (c ) joined the Benedictine monks, but was eventually called beyond the cloister to serve the larger Church as pope. He is recognized as one of the greatest reformer popes. St. Gregory instituted what is known as the Gregorian reform. Through this 8 reform he wanted to end rampant and widespread abuses in the Church. Mary Magdalene de Pazzi ( ), daughter of a noble Florentine family, was a Carmelite mystic who prayed tirelessly for the Church. Thursday, May 26. St. Philip Neri ( ) spent much of his life hearing confessions and providing spiritual direction. He was considered somewhat of a clairvoyant due to his ability to read the hearts of people. He formed the religious order, the Oratorians, a congregation of diocesan priests bound by the bond of love rather than religious vows and dedicated to the spiritual well-being of souls.
Liturgy Corner Friday, May 27. St. Augustine of Canterbury ( 604) led a successful mission of monks to evangelize Anglo- Saxons in Britain. He built the first cathedral and school at Canterbury, and later founded the first monastery in close proximity to the cathedral. Within the ecumenical movement he is an icon of unity a time when Rome and England were of one mind. Sourcebook 2016 May is the Month of Our Lady Readings for May 22, May 29, 2016 Sunday, May 22. 12 Catholics for Freedom of Religion - CFFR As Americans prepare for Memorial Day - Religious Liberty in the Military Threatened: The Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF), which opposes religion and views the Bible as a symbol of "religious oppression", is trying to ban the Bible from displays honoring veterans. This group has forced Veterans Affairs hospitals in Akron, Ohio, Youngstown, Ohio, and Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, to ban the Bible from "Missing Man" displays. These honor our MIA and POW soldiers with special symbolic items, including a Bible, which represents "faith" and our "country - founded as one nation under God." "MIA/POW tables have been part of military tradition for generations," said the Chaplains Alliance for Religious Liberty. "They have always included certain elements including a Bible." (aclj.org, 4/19/16; blaze.com, 2/29/16) The MRFF demanded the military cancel National Day Of Prayer events at Marine Corps University. They threatened General Pratt and the Command Chaplain with federal lawsuits for allowing an invitation to soldiers in training to this optional prayer service. (aclj.org, 5/3/16) An Air Force Academy cadet faced repercussions after writing a Bible verse on a hallway whiteboard designated for both official and personal use. Fellow cadets protested by writing Bible verses on whiteboards throughout the academy. "Suppressing religion is wrong whether it is done behind the Iron Curtain or in a dorm hallway," said Alliance Defending Freedom. (frc.org. 3/13/14) Restore Military Freedom Coalition is comprised of 24 groups including Thomas More Law Center and Alliance Defending Freedom, that stand ready to assist the military.
