Sidesperson and Reader: Sheila Perry Lay Administrator: Bonnie Robinson in a Coptic text that is attributed to him. Whatever is the case, and however opaque the details, her story makes clear the devoted role of several women who supported Jesus. A role we have not properly recognized in the last few centuries. 3 14 The Calendar St Salome First century October 22 nd is a Holy Day dedicated to Salome, one of the women named by St Mark (15: 40) who watched the crucifixion, and who, with Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James, brought spices to anoint Jesus s body in the tomb (Mark 16: 1-8). She was one of the first witnesses to the Resurrection. Mark also tells us that when Jesus was in Galilee, she followed Him and ministered to Him. In the comparable passage from St Matthew, the place of Salome in the text (27: 56) is taken by the mother of the sons of Zebedee. St John (19:25) does not mention Salome by name, but describes his mother s sister, Mary the wife of Cleopas in the group. St Luke (23: 49) simply tells us that there were women who had followed him from Galilee and who watched the crucifixion from a distance. From these hints, Salome is traditionally recognized as the wife of Zebedee and the mother of St James the Greater and St John the Evangelist. The passage from John has been used to suggest that she was called Mary and was Jesus s aunt and therefore that James and John were His cousins. But others indicate that Mary s sister and Mary the wife of Cleopas are different people (we have separated them by a comma), and St John was simply listing Jesus s aunt and had forgotten her name, or didn t mention it because she was his mother. St Matthew s account (20: 20-28) of the mother of the sons of Zebedee asking that James and John may have places of privilege next to Jesus is another place where Salome may be indirectly mentioned. This story as we might read it is about her sons ultimate position in heaven, but it is also possible that Salome anticipated that Jesus s journey to Jerusalem was to start an uprising and overthrow the regime there. Certainly Jesus didn t expect that, although his entry to Jerusalem, which we used to celebrate on Palm Sunday, suggests He had substantial political support. The apocryphal texts have other suggestions about her, that she might have been one of the first to see the baby Jesus and helped the mid-wife bathe Him, for instance, but others reiterate her presence at the empty tomb and confirm that she was a follower of Jesus. Our own Bartholomew, who wrote a gospel (now missing), mentions her Twenty-second Sunday after Pentecost October 16, :30 a. m. The Gospel The Holy Gospel is written in the eighteenth chapter of the Gospel according to Saint Luke beginning at the 1st verse. (BCP) Glory be to thee, O Lord. (BCP) The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. (BAS) Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. (BAS) Then Jesus told them a parable about their need to pray always and not to lose heart. He said, "In a certain city there was a judge who neither feared God nor had respect for people. In that city there was a widow who kept coming to him and saying, 'Grant me justice against my opponent.' For a while he refused; but later he said to himself, 'Though I have no fear of God and no respect for anyone, yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will grant her justice, so that she may not wear me out by continually coming.'" And the Lord said, "Listen to what the unjust judge says. And will not God grant justice to his chosen ones who cry to him day and night? Will he delay long in helping them? I tell you, he will quickly grant justice to them. And yet, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?" ( Luke 18:1-8) The Gospel of Christ. Praise be to thee, O Christ. (BCP) Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. (BAS) 4 13

5 A Reading from the Second Letter of Timothy As for you, continue in what you have learned and firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it, and how from childhood you have known the sacred writings that are able to instruct you for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, so that everyone who belongs to God may be proficieint, equipped for every good work. In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I solemnly urge you: proclaim the message; be persistent whether the time is favourable or unfavourable; convince, rebuke, and encourage, with the utmost patience in teaching. For the time is coming when people will not put up with sound doctrine, but having itching ears, they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own desires, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander away to myths. As for you, always be sober, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, carry out your ministry fully. (2 Timothy 3:14-4:5) Hear what the spirit is saying to the church. Thanks be to God. Prayer List To add someone to the list, please contact the office with the name and a few words concerning the condition., i.e. upcoming surgery. Names will remain on the list for two weeks unless an update is received. Organ Postlude Our service officially ends with the dismissal after the last hymn - Go in peace to love & serve the Lord. Please feel free to leave or go to coffee hour. Some parishioners like to remain to listen to the organ postlude. We ask that you be mindful of them listening and begin your conversations in the church at the end of the postlude. Today, we focus on the music of Thomas Tallis ( ) who was Organist at Canterbury Cathedral for a time, and later became a Gentleman of the Chapel Royal. He was hugely influential in the development of music in general, as well as that of the Anglican church in association with the British crown. Tallis worked for Henry VIII, Edward VI, Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth. One of his pupils, William Byrd, was himself hugely influential this despite both being Roman Catholics. Tallis and Byrd were considered so important to music of the court that Queen Elizabeth actually granted them a 21-year monopoly on the ability to print music. Today, we will sing his famous Canon as the gradual hymn. The theme for the Organ Postlude is the theme used by Vaughan Williams in his piece entitled Fantasia on a Theme by Tallis. Welcome to Our Visitors To become a parishioner, please fill in one of the cards found in the book rack in each pew, place it in the collection plate or give it to a sidesperson. Oh, how I love your law! all the day long it is in my mind. Your commandment has made me wiser than my enemies, and it is always with me. Refrain. I have more understanding than all my teachers, for your decrees are my study. I am wiser than the elders, because I observe your commandments. Refrain. I restrain my feet from every evil way, that I may keep your word. I do not shrink from your judgements, because you yourself have taught me. Refrain. How sweet are your words to my taste! they are sweeter than honey to my mouth. Through your commandments I gain understanding; therefore I hate every lying way. Refrain. 6 11

7 A Reading from the Book of Jeremiah The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will sow the house of Israel and the house of Judah with the seed of humans and the seed of animals. And just as I have watched over them to pluck up and break down, to overthrow, destroy, and bring evil, so I will watch over them to build and to plant, says the Lord. In those days they shall no longer say: "The parents have eaten sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge." But all shall die for their own sins; the teeth of everyone who eats sour grapes shall be set on edge. The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah. It will not be like the covenant that I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt - a covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, says the Lord. But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. No longer shall they teach one another, or say to each other, "Know the Lord," for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, says the Lord; for I will forgive their iniquity, and remember their sin no more. (Jeremiah 31:27-34) Hear what the spirit is saying to the church. Thanks be to God. Our Syrian Family Volunteer Drivers Wanted Our Refugee Committee seeks volunteer drivers, with their own vehicles, to occasionally help our Syrian family get to important appointments or events such as medical, dental, education & language classes, groceries, community and church events and, occasionally, emergency rides may be necessary. To help, contact Sally Doherty, Coordinator: Family Transport and Interpreters: or sally.doherty@bell.net Remaining Needs Preparing to Welcome Our Syrian Family St. Bart s Refugee Committee is finalizing its checklists of items needed to house and welcome our Syrian refugee family. While we have been fortunate in securing donations of most of the required furniture, household goods and supplies, a few key items remain outstanding. We are still seeking some furnishings, housewares and electronics (e.g. master bedroom night tables, two clock radios/alarm clocks, a few small kitchen goods, computer), as well as some household cleaning and maintenance supplies, (e.g. vacuum cleaner, batteries, umbrellas for the adults and little girl) and toiletries. Winter clothing items, such as boots, coats, and hats/ scarves/mitts/gloves are especially important and needed. Since the information we have about clothing sizes is approximate, gift cards for stores such as Winners/Homesense, Walmart and Giant Tiger would be gratefully appreciated (enabling the family to ensure sizes are right and to get some items of their own choosing.) Gift cards for grocery stores such as Metro-Food Basics and Loblaws/Superstore/Your Independent Grocer would also be enormously helpful to the family. For further information about specific needs and to find out how you can help, please contact: For clothing: Diane Chau, dianeqchau@gmail.com Furnishings: Irene Walker, irenejw@me.com Household & toiletries: Martine Cappon, mcappon@sympatico.ca Request for Assistance With Our Refugee Family We will need volunteers to prepare meals for the first week of our Syrian family s arrival and for help with child care for perhaps a longer period. All volunteers for babysitting will need a police records check. Volunteers may also be needed to assist with recreation and translation. Contact: Liz Heatherington for details on police checks and more info. 10 7
