The Calendar St Peter and St Paul, Apostles and Martyrs (d. c. 64 & 67) June 29 th is the feast of St Peter and St Paul, the two outstanding apostles and founders of the church in Rome. Both have other days dedicated individually to them: 18 th and 25 th January for the Confession of St Peter and for the Conversion of St Paul, respectively, and 1 August, Lammas Day, for Peter s miraculous escape from prison (Acts 12). Peter, originally called Simon, was the most prominent of the apostles after the resurrection, led the church in Jerusalem, and represents the very Early Church as a reform movement within Judaism, for his preaching is of Jesus fulfilling the Law. Paul, whose miraculous conversion must have jolted the church, extended the message outside Judaism and powerfully influenced our expectations of what it means to be a Christian through his original thinking and writing. He travelled widely, perhaps as far west as Spain (Rom 15: 23-28). Paul s insight recognized our salvation through Jesus s sacrifice, a foundational position for Christianity. Although Peter s vision was key to the church in Jerusalem accepting gentiles (Acts 10), Paul was their principal advocate within the dominantly Jewish Christian community, and clashed with Peter over their integration into the church at Antioch, where Peter had gone after prison, to be, traditionally, the first bishop. Both Peter and Paul show us the unqualified love and forgiveness of Jesus. All four gospels describe how Peter denied Jesus three times on the night before his trial, while the role of Saul in persecuting Christians is well presented in the Acts. Yet they became key witnesses, filled with the Holy Spirit. St Augustine emphasized that Jesus s phrase on this rock I will build my church (Matt 16: 18) refers to our faith, not the institution. Peter s keys are symbols of how his teaching, conveyed especially in St Mark s Gospel, leads to salvation and unlocks the gates of heaven. Both Peter and Paul were martyred in Rome during the persecution by the Emperor Nero. Peter was probably crucified (traditionally head downwards), as indicated by St John (21: 18), and Paul was beheaded, being a Roman citizen. It is likely that the sites regarded as their tombs are correct, and in the 4 th century the Emperor Constantine erected basilicas over them, St Peter s inside the walls of Rome, and St Paul s just outside. Peter was married when Jesus called him, because the first three gospels mention his mother-in-law (e.g., Lk 4:38), and some may take heart from that. Submitted by Chris Burn 11

3 The Gospel 10 The Holy Gospel is written in the first chapter of the Gospel according to Saint Luke beginning at the 57th verse. (BCP) Glory be to thee, O Lord. (BCP) The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. (BAS) Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. (BAS) Now the time came for Elizabeth to give birth, and she bore a son. Her neighbours and relatives heard that the Lord had shown his great mercy to her, and they rejoiced with her. On the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and they were going to name him Zechariah after his father. But his mother said, No; he is to be called John. They said to her, None of your relatives has this name. Then they began motioning to his father to find out what name he wanted to give him. He asked for a writing-tablet and wrote, His name is John. And all of them were amazed. Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue freed, and he began to speak, praising God. Fear came over all their neighbours, and all these things were talked about throughout the entire hill country of Judea. All who heard them pondered them and said, What then will this child become? For, indeed, the hand of the Lord was with him. Then his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke this prophecy: Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for he has looked favourably on his people and redeemed them. He has raised up a mighty saviour for us in the house of his servant David, as he spoke through the mouth of his holy prophets from of old, that we would be saved from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us. Thus he has shown the mercy promised to our ancestors, and has remembered his holy covenant, the oath that he swore to our ancestor Abraham, to grant us that we, being rescued from the hands of our enemies, might serve him without fear, in holiness and righteousness before him all our days. And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High; for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways, to give knowledge of salvation to his people by the forgiveness of their sins. By the tender mercy of our God, the dawn from on high will break upon us, to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace. The child grew and became strong in spirit, and he was in the wilderness until the day he appeared publicly to Israel. The Gospel of Christ. Praise be to thee, O Christ. Names will remain on the list for two weeks unless an update is received. A Reading from the Letter of Paul to the Romans Should we continue in sin in order that grace may abound? By no means! How can we who died to sin go on living in it? Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? Therefore we have been buried with him by baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. We know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be destroyed, and we might no longer be enslaved to sin. For whoever has died is freed from sin. But if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. The death he died, he died to sin, once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God. So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. (Romans 6:1-11) Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church. Thanks be to God. 9

5 Psalm 86:1-10, Bow down your ear, O Lord, and answer me, for I am poor and in misery. Keep watch over my life, for I am faithful; save your servant who puts his trust in you. Refrain. Be merciful to me, O Lord, for you are my God; I call upon you all the day long. Gladden the soul of your servant, for to you, O Lord, I lift up my soul. For you, O Lord, are good and forgiving, and great is your love toward all who call upon you. Refrain. Give ear, O Lord, to my prayer, and attend to the voice of my supplications. In the time of my trouble I will call upon you, for you will answer me. Refrain. Among the gods there is none like you, O Lord, nor anything like your works. All nations you have made will come and worship you, O Lord, and glorify your name. For you are great; you do wondrous things; and you alone are God. Refrain. Turn to me and have mercy upon me; give your strength to your servant; and save the child of your handmaid. Show me a sign of your favour, so that those who hate me may see it and be ashamed; because you, O Lord, have helped me and comforted me. Refrain. 8 Beginning July 2 - Summer Sunday Services - 9:30 a.m. The parish office will be closed on June 29 and July 3 Parish Office in July - Tuesday to Thursday - 8:30 a. m. - 12:30 p.m. In the case of an emergency, please leave a detailed message and your call will be returned as soon as possible. But Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, whom she had borne to Abraham, playing with her son Isaac. So she said to Abraham, "Cast out this slave woman with her son; for the son of this slave woman shall not inherit along with my son Isaac." The matter was very distressing to Abraham on account of his son. But God said to Abraham, "Do not be distressed because of the boy and because of your slave woman; whatever Sarah says to you, do as she tells you, for it is through Isaac that offspring shall be named for you. As for the son of the slave woman, I will make a nation of him also, because he is your offspring." So Abraham rose early in the morning, and took bread and a skin of water, and gave it to Hagar, putting it on her shoulder, along with the child, and sent her away. And she departed, and wandered about in the wilderness of Beer-sheba. When the water in the skin was gone, she cast the child under one of the bushes. Then she went and sat down opposite him a good way off, about the distance of a bowshot; for she said, "Do not let me look on the death of the child." And as she sat opposite him, she lifted up her voice and wept. And God heard the voice of the boy; and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven, and said to her, "What troubles you, Hagar? Do not be afraid; for God has heard the voice of the boy where he is. Come, lift up the boy and hold him fast with your hand, for I will make a great nation of him." Then God opened her eyes and she saw a well of water. She went, and filled the skin with water, and gave the boy a drink. God was with the boy, and he grew up; he lived in the wilderness, and became an expert with the bow. He lived in the wilderness of Paran; and his mother got a wife for him from the land of Egypt. (Genesis 21:8-21) Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church. Thanks be to God. 6 7
