The Calendar The Birth of St John the Baptist Blessed be the Lord God of Israel: for he hath visited, and redeemed his people; And hath raised up a mighty salvation for us; in the house of his servant David. Luke 1: 68,69 (KJV) St Luke brings St John the Baptist into the world with a flourish of prophecy. Zachariah, John s elderly father, had been struck dumb when told by the angel Gabriel to expect a son by his equally elderly wife Elizabeth and to call him John. Zachariah was skeptical of the angel s message, and lost his speech as a result. Mary, carrying Jesus, visited Elizabeth in her third trimester, and may well have stayed to help when John was born. Zachariah s lips were loosened after John s birth, and the poetry that we know as the Benedictus gushed out (Lk 1: 68-79). Luke seems to have been set on establishing John as the forerunner of the Messiah to fulfill the prophecy of Isaiah and to establish the fundamental nature of Jesus s mission. John is described at three points in the gospel accounts of Jesus s life. His birth is the first, antecedent to Jesus. Jesus s baptism similarly marks the beginning of His ministry, while John s death brings home mortal consequences of speaking truth to power, foreshadowing the Passion. The church has emphasized John as the forerunner by choosing to mark his birth on June 24 th, when the year turns, six months before Christmas. John lived an austere life in the desert, urging repentance and strict obedience to the law of Moses as preparation for the coming of the kingdom. The contemporary historian Josephus described John s leadership of a community we might today describe as fundamentalist, and certainly on the edge. They were regarded as potentially rebellious, although their commitment was predominantly religious, not primarily political. Jesus may initially have been one of his disciples. Jesus called his cousin a burning and a shining light (Jn 5:35). For thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways; to give light to them that sit in darkness, and in the shadow of death: and to guide our feet into the way of peace. He also said, "With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable will we use for it? It is like a mustard seed, which, when sown upon the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth; yet when it is sown it grows up and becomes the greatest of all shrubs, and puts forth large branches, so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade." With many such parables he spoke the word to them, as they were able to hear it; he did not speak to them except in parables, but he explained everything in private to his disciples. Bach A Reading from the Second Letter of Paul to the Corinthians We are always confident; even though we know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord - for we walk by faith, not by sight. Yes, we do have confidence, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord. So whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to please him. For all of us must appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each may receive recompense for what has been done in the body, whether good or evil. For the love of Christ urges us on, because we are convinced that one has died for all; therefore all have died. And he died for all, so that those who live might live no longer for themselves, but for him who died and was raised for them. Canon Laurette Sunday, July 15 Do you have a question about the scriptures, church, liturgy, or hymnody that you have always wondered about but have not had the chance to ask aloud? You are invited to submit your question(s) by July 7 in the space provided on the sheet included in the bulletin, and place them in the basket provided at the street entrance to the church. We will explore and hopefully help answer some of your questions. Altar Flowers: Each week two floral arrangements will be placed in the Sanctuary. To contribute to these flowers to celebrate an event or to remember a loved one, consult the flower chart in the parish hall to select a date and then contact Ruth in the Parish Office, , to confirm and provide details for the bulletin. If your date has been taken by another, tributes may be shared or an alternate date chosen. A $75 donation is 5

6 suggested. Mark cheques Altar Flowers as tax receipts will be provided. Summer is here! Many of us will be travelling or at the cottage over the next several weeks. While we are away, St. Bart s will continue its mission. There will be services every Sunday at 9:30. Looking at our church s finances up to the end of May, we are pleased to note that close to $137,000 has been contributed this year by parishioners. Slightly more than 1/2 was contributed through PAR. If you haven t yet switched to making regular donations through PAR, now is an excellent time to do so. This will help you maintain your contributions over the summer when you re away from Ottawa and help in the financial management of St. Bart s. Overall, we re on the right track to meeting our 2018 target for givings. The total amount donated to date represents 42% of the anticipated general givings for Continuing generous financial support by parishioners and careful management of our budget will help ensure St. Bart s remains a cornerstone in our lives. Photo Release Forms Through photos taken at events at St. Bart s and posted on our website, others can share in the experience and help us project a welcoming image of our church community. While these pictures can show the joy of the moment, there are legitimate concerns that these images could be misappropriated or misused. We are respectful and want to protect your privacy. Therefore, we are seeking permission before posting anyone s image, especially when there are children in the photo. The photo release form asks you to indicate whether you would like to opt-in by giving specific permission to use someone's photo, either your own or that of your child. You also have the option of indicating if you wish to opt-out. We invite you to pick up a copy of the form from the back of the church or in the church hall. Completed forms can be left in the baskets. We will keep the signed releases on file in our church office. Tickets are selling very quickly $25. Please visit the office during the week or call This tour, the Choir is singing a variety of music from both religious and secular traditions including Parry s Songs of Farewell, Howell s Requiem, Finzi s Lo, The Full, Final Sacrifice, an works by Tallis and Britten. A Reading from the First Book of Samuel Then Samuel went to Ramah; and Saul went up to his house in Gibeah of Saul. Samuel did not see Saul again until the day of his death, but Samuel grieved over Saul. And the Lord was sorry that he had made Saul king over Israel. The Lord said to Samuel, How long will you grieve over Saul? I have rejected him from being king over Israel. Fill your horn with oil and set out; I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have provided for myself a king among his sons. Samuel said, How can I go? If Saul hears of it, he will kill me. And the Lord said, Take a heifer with you, and say, I have come to sacrifice to the Lord. Invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do; and you shall anoint for me the one whom I name to you. Samuel did what the Lord commanded and came to Bethlehem. The elders of the city came to meet him trembling, and said, Do you come peaceably? He said, Peaceably; I have come to sacrifice to the Lord; sanctify yourselves and come with me to the sacrifice. And he sanctified Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice. When they came, he looked on Eliab and thought, Surely the Lord s anointed is now before the Lord. But the Lord said to Samuel, Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for the Lord does not see as mortals see; they look on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart. Then Jesse called Abinadab and made him pass before Samuel. He said, Neither has the Lord chosen this one. Then Jesse made Shammah pass by. And he said, Neither has the Lord chosen this one. Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel, and Samuel said to Jesse, The Lord has not chosen any of these. Samuel said to Jesse, Are all your sons here? And he said, There remains yet the youngest, but he is keeping the sheep. And Samuel said to Jesse, Send and bring him; for we will not sit down until he comes here. He sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and had beautiful eyes, and was handsome. The Lord said, Rise and anoint him; for this is the one. Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers; and the spirit of the Lord came mightily upon David from that day forward. Samuel then set out and went to Ramah.
