3 MAY 11, 2014 EASTER IV MOTHER S DAY On this Mother s Day, we give thanks for all our mothers and for those who provide motherly care and we give thanks for the many ways that mothers bless our lives. Happy Mother s Day! Thank you to all the men who are singing in our choir today for Mother s Day! Kick Off meeting for Christmas Market Coordinators and Group Leaders and any other interested parties, to lay ground work for the 2014 Christmas Market. When? Parish Hall, Room 201 For more information contact Cathy Payne COFFEE HOUR HELP NEEDED After 13 years, our Coffee Hour Convenor would now like to share all that fun with a partner (or 2)! We are looking for someone to act as co-convenor for alternate months (or weeks). Duties include setting up before the service, making the tea and coffee and supervising the clean up. On the job training happily provided! It s not a difficult job, but it s a very important one. If you think you can help out, please call Tim Tiernay ALSO NEEDED; We have a few spots for volunteers to serve on the last few Sundays of this season. Please check out the sign-up list at coffee hour and pick a Sunday that you are able to help. Thanks. LEMONADE ON THE LAWN Sunday June 8th will be the last coffee hour before the summer. We would like to offer lemonade each Sunday for June, July and August, but we can t do it without your help. 4 Bereavement Support Group recently finished a five week session, but have decided to continue meeting on an informal basis. If you, or someone you know is having difficulty in coping with a loss of any kind, we invite you to join us on Tuesdays at 2:00 pm in the boardroom. This is an opportunity for you to share your journey in a small group setting and to hear from others who are experiencing a similar situation. The five week session will be offered again in the evening starting in September. Please contact Rev. Deacon Sheila Plant for more information. PHOENIX FELLOWSHIP DROP IN CENTRE meets Wednesday morning in the Parish Hall, following the 10am church service. May 14: DVD: Visions of England May 21: Lunch at Baranga s on the Beach The St Luke's Needle Group enjoyed a winter of knitting, crocheting, needlepoint, and even rug-hooking! Now warmer weather is here, we'll have one last meeting and then adjourn til the fall. All needle crafts and all skill levels are always welcome! Please bring your work and join us at 10 am, Tuesday, May 20. Then mark your calendars for our start date for the fall: 10 am on Tuesday, Sept. 16, the third Tuesday of that month. After that, we'll continue to meet on the first and third Tuesdays during the fall and winter. For all your spring gardening needs, don't forget to check out Connon Nurseries. 5 VERGERS GUILD CONFERENCE SEPTEMBER 25-28, 2014 Sunday services on September 28 will be at Christ s Church Cathedral, Hamilton at 10:30am. Free transportation will be available for everyone wishing to attend. Sign up sheets are available in the narthex. PLEASE JOIN US FOR COFFEE HOUR, IN THE PARISH HALL, FOLLOWING THE 10am SERVICE This year St. Luke s and other Anglican Churches of Burlington will be joining with our friends at Knox Presbyterian Church to offer our Vacation Bible School. It will run July 21-25, 9am-Noon at Knox Presbyterian Church and is open to all children who have completed SK Grade 6. Colonel Matthew Elliott - Honouring an Early Canadian Hero Sunday May 18 at 1:30 p.m. You are invited to honour Colonel Matthew Elliott ( ), who defended this land before it became Canada. He walked from Amherstburg to Burlington, fought alongside Tecumseh at his last stand at the Battle of the Thames & brought the refugees and those injured to Burlington Heights, where the British were stationed (across from Dundurn Castle). He died at Joseph Brant's home 200 years ago this month and was buried here in Burlington, most likely in an unmarked grave at St. Luke's as that is where Brant was first buried. Elliott was the Superintendent of the Western District for the British Indian Department. On May 18, the re-enactment men of the Caldwell Rangers, part of the British Indian Department, will honour Matthew Elliott with a short ceremony and a musket salute. All are welcome. ALLERGY ALERT! Their mission is to provide free medical field care & preventative health care to communities in the Kakamega & Vihiga counties of Kenya.
