3 The Calendar The Annunciation of the Lord (Lady Day) A woman in the crowd raised her voice and said to him, Blessed is the womb that bore you, and the breasts that you sucked! St Luke, 11: 27 (RSV) The Annunciation is the beginning of the Christian era. Up to the eighteenth century March 25th was recognized as the first day of the year. It is a red-letter day, formerly called The Annunciation of Our Lady, the only case where the Book of Common Prayer uses this title for the Blessed Virgin Mary. There are six festivals in the year associated with Mary her conception and nativity, the Annunciation, her visit to Elizabeth, Christmas, of course, and her assumption. We might add the naming of Jesus and the Presentation (Candlemas). Yet, in fact, we pay her little attention, perhaps because of ambivalence towards historical practices, and perhaps because the gospels tell us little about her after the nativity stories, mentioning her only in five places. We might imagine how bewildered she may have been after her most unusual encounter with the angel, but it did not prevent her consenting to God s will. She must have believed that God had a special role for her son, yet with Joseph she and Jesus had to escape to Egypt as refugees. There she probably weaned Him and watched His first steps and listened to His first words. They came home to Nazareth, where she must have had countless conversations with Him as an adult with a child, almost certainly made His meals, and made Him eat them. As He grew older she had to decide when to choose for Him and when to let Him choose, when to guide Him and when to stand back; she was bringing up God. She may have been terrified when, aged 12, He did not return with them from Jerusalem; a terror that increased in the days it took to find Him. Then she saw His calmness as He made clear His separation from His home. A sword shall pierce your heart also, Simeon had said to her. After Joseph died, He would have been there to support her; but there are hints of estrangement: O woman, what have you to do with me? He chided her at Cana. Who is my mother? He replied at Capernaum to the man who told Him Mary was nearby waiting for Him. Her overwhelming maternal instincts and love took her to Golgotha to stand near Him at His torture and desecration. I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word, she had said to the angel. Nothing would ever be the same again. Eucharistic Prayer No. 3 p.196 Proper Preface for Lent Priest Blessed are you, gracious God, creator of heaven and earth, because you bid your faithful people to cleanse their hearts and to prepare with joy for the paschal feast; that reborn through the waters of baptism and renewed in the eucharistic mystery, we may be more fervent in prayer and more generous in the works of love. Therefore we raise our voices to you in praise to proclaim the glory of your name. Amen. The Breaking of the Bread We break this bread, Communion in Christ s body once broken. Let your Church be the wheat which bears its fruit in dying. If we have died with him, we shall live with him; If we hold firm, we shall reign with him. The Gifts of God for the People of God. (BCP) Glory be to thee, O Lord. (BCP) The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. (BAS) Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. (BAS) Now among those who went up to worship at the festival were some Greeks. They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and said to him, "Sir, we wish to see Jesus." Philip went and told Andrew; then Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. Jesus answered them, "The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Those who love their life lose it, and those who hate their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there will my servant be also. Whoever serves me, the Father will honour. Now my soul is troubled. And what should I say - 'Father, save me from this hour'? No, it is for this reason that I have come to this hour. Father, glorify your name." Then a voice came from heaven, "I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again." The crowd standing there heard it and said that it was thunder. Others said, "An angel has spoken to him." Jesus answered, "This voice has come for your sake, not for mine. Now is the judgement of this world; now the ruler of this world will be driven out. And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself." He said this to indicate the kind of death he was to die. (John 12:20-33) The Gospel of Christ. Praise be to thee, O Christ. (BCP) Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. (BAS) 9 9
5 A Reading from the Letter of Paul to the Hebrews Christ did not glorify himself in becoming a high priest, but was appointed by the one who said to him, "You are my Son, today I have begotten you"; as he says also in another place, "You are a priest forever, according to the order of Melchizedek." In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. Although he was a Son, he learned obedience through what he suffered; and having been made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him, having been designated by God a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek. (Hebrews 5:5-10) 8 Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church. Gradual Hymn All for Jesus Thanks be to God. Jesus, all for Jesus; all I am and have and ever hope to be. Jesus, all for Jesus; all I am and have and ever hope to be. All of my ambitions, hopes and plans, I surrender these into your hands. All of my ambitions, hopes and plans, I surrender these into your hands. For it s only in your will that I am free. For it s only in your will that I am free. Jesus, all for Jesus; all I am and have and ever hope to be. Sunday School Calling all 4 to 13 year-olds! New arrivals are always welcome. 6 A Reading from the Book of Jeremiah The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah. It will not be like the covenant that I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt a covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, says the Lord. But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. No longer shall they teach one another, or say to each other, "Know the Lord," for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, says the Lord; for I will forgive their iniquity, and remember their sin no more. (Jeremiah 31:31-34) Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church. Thanks be to God. Psalm 119:9-16 How shall a young man cleanse his way? By keeping to your words. With my whole heart I seek you; let me not stray from your commandments. I treasure your promise in my heart, that I may not sin against you. Refrain. Blessed are you, O Lord; instruct me in your statutes. With my lips will I recite all the judgements of your mouth. I have taken greater delight in the way of your decrees than in all manner of riches. Refrain. I will meditate on your commandments and give attention to your ways. My delight is in your statutes; I will not forget your word. Refrain. 6 7
