The Calendar St. Theodore of Tarsus ( ), Archbishop Theodore of Tarsus was the eighth archbishop of Canterbury ( ). He grew up in the eastern Mediterranean, finding a monastic vocation. He left Tarsus by 637, at the latest, when it was conquered by Arabs. Before then he had gained experience of Syrian and Persian culture after invasions by forces from those countries. When he left Tarsus he moved to Constantinople and then by 660 to Rome, where he lived with other eastern monks. He had received a rigorous academic training, which was noticed within his order. In Britain, the Synod of Whitby (664) reconciled Roman and Celtic traditions within the church, favouring Rome, and when the see of Canterbury became vacant in 667, one Wighard was sent to Rome to be consecrated archbishop by the pope. Unfortunately, Wighard died of plague before he could be consecrated, and in a flash of inspiration, Pope Vitalian consecrated Theodore as archbishop on the recommendation of his superior, and sent him to Britain to settle the church after the upheaval that had led to Whitby. It was a brilliant appointment, because Theodore, although 66 years old when he was consecrated, travelled the length and breadth of England, reorganizing the church and creating one organization for the country. He founded eight new dioceses to add to the eight already established, and defined their borders so that they did not cross kingdoms. Only two of these dioceses are unrecognizable today. He called several national synods with representatives from several dioceses, the first at Hertford in 673, which some argue is really the point at which the Church of England began. These synods settled church organization and dealt with theological disputes. In his own diocese he established a school for monks and clergy ushering in a golden age of learning and scholarship within Anglo-Saxon Britain. At the end of his life, on September 19th, 690, there was one Church of England. He did all this after most of us expect to be retired. His story illustrates the work of the Holy Spirit through unlikely channels, challenging us to see God working in ways we might not expect. Submitted by Chris Burn. For it is written, "I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart." Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, God decided, through the foolishness of our proclamation, to save those who believe. For Jews demand signs and Greeks desire wisdom, but we proclaim Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those who are the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 6 Bazaar News Our Bazaar will be held on Saturday, November 8, 2014! It opens at 12 noon 1 pm for our volunteers and persons with disabilities, and to the public from 1 4 p.m. If you would like to donate some items and need assistance, please do not hesitate to let us know. A Reading from the Book of Numbers The people became impatient on the way. The people spoke against God and against Moses, "Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and we detest this miserable food." Then the Lord sent poisonous serpents among the people, and they bit the people, so that many Israelites died. The people came to Moses and said, "We have sinned by speaking against the Lord and against you; pray to the Lord to take away the serpents from us." So Moses prayed for the people. So Moses made a serpent of bronze, and put it upon a pole; and whenever a serpent bit someone, that person would look at the serpent of bronze and live.
