In loving memory of Scott Reynolds from Bill Barbara Turner. 2 The Calendar Saints of the Reformation On October 31st, 1517, Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses against papal indulgences to Wittenberg church door, igniting a rebellion against Rome that tumbled out of sacred into secular society, venting political grievances that had festered for over 200 years. Luther and other northern Europeans are remembered for their reforming efforts to halt corruption within the church and for affirming that we are saved by faith, not works. With today s balanced hindsight, we also remember those who opposed the reformers, first called Protestants in 1529, for their commitment to one catholic (i.e., universal) church. The key event in the Anglican reformation was the placement in every parish church of the Great Bible (1539), freshly translated into English by Miles Coverdale, and ordered by Thomas Cromwell to be read each week. Jesus s words and ministry were now in the hands and heads of ordinary people, who could see the simplicity of the Early Church and how different it was from the establishment around them. Naturally, challenges arose, many of which were played out in high politics, with reformers or their counterparts pitted against the state. Henry executed 81 people who held to Rome. Queen Mary tortured and burned over 250 for heresy, when they would not recant their denial of transubstantiation or the authority of the pope. The total included over 50 women and many teenage boys, one victim of Edmund Bonner, Bishop of London and Mary s agent, being Richard Mekin, aged 15, burned alive for saying that another victim had died holy. Elizabeth only burned five heretics, but she had over 300 Catholics brutally hung, drawn, and quartered for treason. Catholicism was revitalized and Protestantism gained its conviction from the witness of these martyrs, as the crowds watched bodies screaming in torment for what they had known to be the truth. Few people who visit London see Smithfield as the site of the heretics bonfires or Marble Arch as the location of the Tyburn gibbet Elizabeth used. Similarly few recognize these, or Oxford Street then the route to Tyburn, as places on the black map underlying southern England that generated such bitter distrust between Catholics and Protestants over the last 450 years. But to the martyrs we owe our faith. They cried out in a loud voice, saying, Salvation belongs to our God who is seated on the throne, and to the Lamb! And all the angels stood around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshipped God, singing, Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honour and power and might be to our God for ever and ever! Amen. Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, Who are these, robed in white, and where have they come from? I said to him, Sir, you are the one that knows. A Reading from the First Epistle of John 8:15 only See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and that is what we are. The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Beloved, we are God s children now; what we will be has not yet been revealed. What we do know is this: when he is revealed, we will be like him, for we will see him as he is. And all who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure (1 John 3: 1-3) Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church. Thanks be to God. 9

5 Treasurer s Report as of October 29 th, 2017 My forecast for the full year 2017 for our parish is that revenues from all sources will be $440K vs. total expenses of $515K. In other words, there will be a shortfall of about $75K. The largest portion of our spending (61%) is paid directly to the diocese to cover the employment expenses of our fulltime staff as well as property insurance and Parish Fair Share (our contribution to the diocesan budget). The diocesan charge for clergy salary and benefits is set by the diocese, and is not based on who the priest is. In 2017, 12% of our spending is on capital items to maintain the church, parish hall and rectory. 6% is on Outreach, primarily Cornerstone this year. The final 21% is on all the other non-compensation overhead expenses that are unavoidable; e.g. utilities, grounds maintenance, taxes etc. Our largest source of revenue is Givings. Based on the first nine months, we are headed for a total of about $300K for This is $25K below budget and $75k below what we need to close our budget gap without drawing again on our trust funds (which are down to about $180K excluding SOCE). In short, a 25% increase in Annual Givings would solve the problem. A handy rule-of-thumb is that we should all follow the principle: if money is tight, please consider donating $1K p.a. If your circumstances are normal, then $2K is reasonable. If you have been blessed with ample financial resources, then please consider $4K (or more!) p.a. I would like the parish to reach 80% of annual donations on the PAR program (automatic monthly bank transfers). We are currently just under 50%. I converted to it myself a few months ago. It felt a bit strange at first not to have an envelope at church but now I prefer not having to scramble to write a cheque each week. If you not on PAR, please consider switching. 6 Commemoration of the Protestant Reformation The Anglican Church of Canada joins churches around the world in recognizing 2017 as the 500th anniversary of the start of the Protestant Reformation. This very significant period in Christian history led to a serious split from the Roman Catholic Church as well as the development of various Christian denominations including Lutheran, Baptist and Mennonite. Although in the early years of the Reformation the Anglican Church saw itself as remaining part of Roman Catholic Church, in subsequent years our theology was deeply affected by many of the ideas promoted by the reformers. With all Christian traditions, we are grateful for the gifts of the Reformation, while also being aware that the bitter conflict of those tumultuous times led to a great deal of human suffering. We congratulate our reformed brothers and sisters for their faithfulness to the gospel down through the centuries, and ask God s continued blessing on them. 6 Please join us for coffee in the parish hall following our services.
