Sidesperson and Reader: Barbara Konst Lay Administrator: Jane Billings Sanctuary Flowers The flowers in the sanctuary are given to the glory of God & in memory of Major Bill Randall, CD by his son Stephen. & Eleanor Maud (Avery) & Alfred Joseph Mallon who were married in this church on June 6, The Calendar Pentecost Pentecost comes from the Greek word meaning the fiftieth day, and was the name given to the Jewish feast commemorating the giving of the Law by Moses, fifty days after the Passover. It was the day the Holy Spirit descended on the Apostles, and is our second greatest celebration. It is the day the church was founded (Acts 2: 1-42), for many years known as Whitsunday. It is now again called Pentecost, perhaps also to allude to the experiences and gifts received by the Apostles, which are emphasized by the Pentecostal Churches, and by the Charismatic Movement in the main denominations. In the Church of the 2 nd and 3 rd centuries, Pentecost also referred to the whole 50 days between Easter and Whitsuntide. During this time no fasting was allowed, and all people stood to pray. The account in the Acts is not an allegory, for when it was written it would have been a memory shared by many people, including the 3,000 who joined the apostles. These new Christians changed the church from a small group of about 120 disciples and others who had seen the risen Lord (Acts 1: 15) into a significant company. Before Pentecost the disciples knew the Lord and His resurrection, but that day they received remarkable courage and energy to spread their knowledge. For them it was fact not faith. The gifts they received were astounding, reversing the confusion of the tower of Babel. They spoke in languages intelligible to persons present and in angelic languages. St Paul wrote extensively to the Christians in Corinth about angelic tongues and the critical importance of their interpretation (1 Cor. 14: 1-40), but his message in this passage is diluted by comments about women that we now interpret as culturally conditioned and so we tend to discard his words. Pentecost, however, is not about culture; it is about the truth. Peter and the disciples spoke what they knew because their knowledge was not to be a secret, but to be shown and evaluated by the world. The church is not a cultural society founded to share experiences, but a world expected to know, speak, and live out the Truth. Submitted by Chris Burn 11

When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained. (BAS) In and Around St Bart s June 2 marked the anniversary of the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II at Westminster Abbey in After the Coronation, the specially-made chairs were presented to the peers who had occupied them for a long six hours on that Tuesday in June. This included the Viscount Alexander of Tunis, Canada's Governor General who served from 1946 to 1952, and Lady Alexander. A Reading from the First Letter of Paul to the Corinthians Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking by the Spirit of God ever says Let Jesus be cursed! and no one can say Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit. Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the discernment of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. All these are activated by one and the same Spirit, who allots to each one individually just as the Spirit chooses. For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body-jews or Greeks, slaves or free-and we were all made to drink of one Spirit. A-/ -- / men. 8 Thursday Mornings Silent Meditation and Bible Study Meditation is held in the church at 8:00 & Bible Study in the hall at 10:00. Altar Flowers Each week two floral arrangements will be placed in the Sanctuary. To contribute to these flowers to celebrate an event or to remember a loved one, consult the flower chart in the parish hall to select a date & then contact Ruth Honeyman in the Parish Office, , to confirm and provide details for the bulletin. June 21 Labyrinth Workshop at St Bart s, 7:00-9:00pm We are blessed with a new labyrinth just completed last year at St Bart s. The garden setting is at its best on the longest day of the year. This workshop will address question like these: How can I use our labyrinth? What s the history of labyrinths? Where do I start? Our two Labyrinth teachers, Phyliss Paryas and Marguerite Rodrigues will speak to these questions and share their own labyrinth experiences. After learning about labyrinths and we will end our evening by walking our labyrinth together. PWRDF Famine Relief For every dollar donated by June 30, 2017 to PWRDF's Famine Relief, the government will put $1 into its Famine Relief Fund. The countries identified for matching funding are the most desperate: Nigeria, Somalia, South Sudan and Yemen. The centerpiece will be the evocative and moving work for violin by Vaughan Williams, The Lark Ascending. Daniel Kushner, from Toronto, will be the soloist with our own Tim Piper accompanying him on the organ. The violin invokes beautiful birdsong that soars through the skies and brings that ethereal beauty into our world. Please make plans to attend. Tuesday, June 13 - Concert at 7:30 p.m. Music of a Northern Land Celebrating Canada s 150th and Latvia s 100th Anniversary. Latvian artists Dzintra Erliha, pianist, Emma Bandeniece, cellist, and Canadian Latvian mezzo soprano, Vilma Indra Vitols present World Premieres for cello and piano, by Imants Ramiņš and Ludmila Knezkova-Hussey and works by Lūcija Garūta, Pēteris Vasks, Jāzeps Mediņš and Tālivaldis Ķeniņš. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they asked, Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs-in our own languages we hear them speaking about God s deeds of power. All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, What does this mean? But others sneered and said, They are filled with new wine. But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them: Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o clock in the morning. No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. And I will show portents in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist. The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of the Lord s great and glorious day. Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.
