Jerusalem Sunday June 1st The Anglican Church of Canada is marking this date as a day of special prayers and offerings for the Diocese of Jerusalem. We have been in Partnership with the Diocese of Jerusalem since November 6th of Bishop Suheil Dawani, pictured here with Bishop John, appreciates our prayers and support. On June 13th, a special fundraiser being held by our Diocese will support the work of the Princess Basma Centre in East Jerusalem, seen in the other photo, and the Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza. 3 The Calendar The Visit of the Blessed Virgin Mary to Elizabeth My soul doth magnify the Lord: And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. St. Luke 1: The first chapter of St Luke s gospel is dominated by the story of St John the Baptist s birth and the visit of the Blessed Virgin Mary to her elderly cousin Elizabeth, St John s mother. Elizabeth, the wife of Zachariah a priest in the temple, had no children and seems to have given up hope of having any. But the angel Gabriel told Zachariah they would have a son, and he was to be called John. In return for his skepticism, Zachariah was struck dumb. Imagine Elizabeth s consternation when she discovered she was pregnant; she retired from public view. Six months later, Gabriel appeared to Mary, and while we usually concentrate on her conception of Jesus, Gabriel also told her about Elizabeth. Mary went to visit her in the hill country, and the child (St John the Baptist) leapt in Elizabeth s womb at his recognition of Jesus s presence. Elizabeth recognized Mary s child as her Lord. Jeremy Taylor, writing in the 17 th century, described the encounter as a collision of joy. Mary s response to Elizabeth is the canticle we know as the Magnificat, one of three pieces of poetry at the beginning of St Luke that have become signatures in our tradition. (The others being the Benedictus (Lk 1: 68-79) and the Nunc dimittis (Lk 2: 29-32).) A few years ago, when Mattins and Evensong dominated our services, we would have known all three by heart. Mary s Magnificat closely echoes the song of Hannah (1 Sam. 2: 1-10) when she discovered she was to bear a son, Samuel, after she thought all was lost. Both Elizabeth and Mary fall in the line of the holy women of the Old Testament like Sarah and Hannah, whose children were given to them by God in a way they could not fail to recognize. Mary stayed with Elizabeth for three months, perhaps until St John was born. Then she went home. She would have shared in Elizabeth and Zachariah s joy. We celebrate her visit on May 31 st. After Jesus had spoken these words, he looked up to heaven and said, "Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son so that the Son may glorify you, since you have given him authority over all people, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. And this is eternal life, that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. I glorified you on earth by finishing the work that you gave me to do. So now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had in your presence before the world existed. I have made your name known to those whom you gave me from the world. They were yours, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything you have given me is from you; for the words that you gave to me I have given to them, and they have received them and know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me. I am asking on their behalf; I am not asking on behalf of the world, but on behalf of those whom you gave me, because they are yours. 5 A Reading from the First Letter of Peter Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that is taking place among you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice insofar as you are sharing Christ's sufferings, so that you may also be glad and shout for joy when his glory is revealed. If you are reviled for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the spirit of glory, which is the Spirit of God, is resting on you. Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, so that he may exalt you in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him, because he cares for you. Discipline yourselves, keep alert. Like a roaring lion your adversary the devil prowls around, looking for someone to devour. Resist him, steadfast in your faith, for you know that your brothers and sisters in all the world are undergoing the same kinds of suffering. And after you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, support, strengthen, and establish you. Stewardship Corner Update 2014 The Stewardship/ GIFT Continuation Committee has been meeting throughout the winter and spring. We are pleased to report that multi-year pledges to the Diocesan/St. Bart s GIFT (Growing in Faith Together) Campaign are being honoured and are up-to-date. The GIFT funding being returned to the parish by the Diocese is being received. The GIFT donations have allowed us to install our wonderful Letourneau organ, level the rear of the church for greater accessibility and move the old font. GIFT is a five year program and continues to raise donations and fund programs until The news on the parish weekly thank-offerings is also good. The parish budget for 2014, approved by parishioners at the annual Vestry meeting, is set to meet regulatory and Diocesan requirements as well as parish needs. Tracking to the end of April indicates cautious optimism and the year-todate comparison with 2013 is positive. We are appreciative of the efforts made by parishioners to support parish needs. There are some parishioners who provide cash donations which are not identified. These givings are important to us, but we would remind parishioners that if your donation is identified and recorded, you will receive a charitable tax receipt at year end. This receipt is beneficial to you as you file your annual (and dreaded!) income tax return. June 7 Cool It For Kids Sing for the Climate Rally 10:00 to Noon Bring your children, grandchildren and neighbours to Parliament Hill, on June 7th, when hundreds of young people will speak and sing out about a crisis that will determine their future. The Rally is a non-partisan event and will include participation by The Boys and Girls Anglican Cathedral Choir and Ottawa gospel choir Big Soul Project. Info: taylorgaye1@gmail.com. 6 Psalm 147 O praise the Lord, for it is a good thing to sing praises unto our God: *yea a joyful and pleasant thing it is to be thankful. The Lord doth build up Jer usalem, *and gather to gether the outcasts of Israel. He healeth those that are broken in heart, *and bindeth up their wounds. He telleth the number of the stars, *and calleth them all by their names. Great is our Lord and great is his power: *yea and his wisdom is infinite. The Lord sitteth up the meek, *and bringeth the un godly down to the ground. A Reading from the Book of Acts So when they had come together, the apostles asked Jesus, "Lord, is this the time when you will restore the kingdom to Israel?" He replied, "It is not for you to know the times or periods that the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." When he had said this, as they were watching, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. While he was going and they were gazing up toward heaven, suddenly two men in white robes stood by them. They said, "Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up toward heaven? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven." Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a sabbath day's journey away. When they had entered the city, they went to the room upstairs where they were staying, Peter, and John, and James, and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James son of Alphaeus, and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James. All these were constantly devoting themselves to prayer, together with certain women, including Mary the mother of Jesus, as well as his brothers. (Acts 1:6-14) Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church. Thanks be to God. O sing unto the Lord with thanksgiving: *sing praises upon the harp unto our God. Who covereth the heaven with clouds, and prepareth rain for the earth, *and maketh grass to grow upon the mountains, and herb for the use of men; Who giveth fodder unto the cattle, *neither delighteth he in any man s legs. But the Lord s delight is in them that fear him, *and put their trust in his mercy. 6 7
