During the last two years of the colourful Canadian Church Calendar the years when the colours of the liturgical seasons lit the days the weeks before Thanksgiving were identified as Creation Time. A season unlike Advent or Lent, which are embedded in our consciousness. In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth (Gen. 1:1). God was there and God created. Genesis does not tell us what God made creation from, and for some it had to be something: ex nihil, nihil fit or as Maria sang in the Sound of Music, nothing comes from nothing, nothing ever could. But by the second century AD, our view had solidified and we understood the distinction between God and the Creation. Thomas Aquinas taught that what God is and that He is are seamlessly interrelated, while all parts of the Creation are transitory. God s existence is outside time, but not ours nor any other part of the Creation. It is difficult to imagine timelessness. Aquinas pointed out that timelessness means that in God s view, there is not a before or after Creation. Time is our experience. Creation did not happen once and then it was left alone. Sustaining the Creation is part and parcel of the act of creation. It is a powerful message as it forces us to consider all of what is around us as a both gift and as sacred. It separates us from the world, where the arguments for sustainability are all about self -preservation and the status quo. It is a view we share with Judaism and Islam. But when we then consider why God created, it must be an act of love. We are here because God wants us to be here. It is a consequence of coming from nothing. In a child s words, God created because he wants friends. (This is a distillation from a book I have read and had to re-read Creation A guide for the perplexed by Simon Oliver, Van Mildert Professor of Theology at Durham University and Canon of Durham Cathedral. I am still perplexed, but less so.) Sidesperson and Reader: Jim Bradford Lay Administrator: Barbara Konst Submitted by Chris Burn 2 11

3 A Reading from the Book of Genesis 10:30 In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, And God said, Let the waters bring forth swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the dome of the sky. So God created the great sea monsters and every living creature that moves, of every kind, with which the waters swarm, and every winged bird of every kind. And God saw that it was good. God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth. And there was evening and there was morning, the fifth day. And God said, Let the earth bring forth living creatures of every kind: cattle and creeping things and wild animals of the earth of every kind. And it was so. God made the wild animals of the earth of every kind, and the cattle of every kind, and everything that creeps upon the ground of every kind. And God saw that it was good. Then God said, Let us make humankind in our image, according to our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the wild animals of the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth. So God created humankind in his image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. God blessed them, and God said to them, Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the air and over every living thing that moves upon the earth. God saw everything that he had made, and indeed, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day. (Genesis 1:1, 20-28, 31a) The Gospel 10:30 10 Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church. Thanks be to God. The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. When they had come near Jerusalem and had reached Bethphage, at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, "Go into the village ahead of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her; untie them and bring them to me. 3 If anyone says anything to you, just say this, 'The Lord needs them.' And he will send them immediately." This took place to fulfill what had been spoken through the prophet, saying, "Tell the daughter of Zion, Look, your king is coming to you, humble, and mounted on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a donkey." (Luke 17:5-10) The Gospel of Christ. Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ. Twentieth Sunday after Pentecost October 1, :30 a. m. 4 The Blessing of the Animals ` Please bring your pets forward for the Blessing. "N. (name of animal, i.e. "Felix", not cat/dog) may you be blessed in the Name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. May you and N. (the name of the guardian) enjoy life together and find joy with the God who created you." The Offertory Generous financial support is our expression of gratitude which along with our time and talents enables us to provide worship at St. Bart s and support God s work in service in our community and beyond. Offertory Hymn: Make Me a Channel of your Peace Temple Make me a channel of your peace: where there is hatred, let me bring your love; where there is injury, your healing pow'r, and where there's doubt, true faith in you. Make me a channel of your peace: where there's despair in life let me bring hope; where there is darkness, only light, and where there's sadness, ever joy. O Spirit, grant that I may never seek so much to be consoled as to console, to be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love with all my soul. Make me a channel of your peace. It is in pardoning that we are pardoned, in giving to all that we receive, and in dying that we're born to eternal life. Blessed be thou, Lord God of Israel, for ever and ever. All that is in the heaven and the earth is thine. All things come of thee and of thine own have we given thee. For Those Who Have Died: Mary Louise Doherty 4 The Gospel 8:15 The Holy Gospel is written in the twenty-first chapter of the Gospel according to Saint Matthew beginning at the 1st verse. Glory be to thee, O Lord. When he entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him as he was teaching, and said, By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority? Jesus said to them, I will also ask you one question; if you tell me the answer, then I will also tell you by what authority I do these things. Did the baptism of John come from heaven, or was it of human origin? And they argued with one another, If we say, From heaven, he will say to us, Why then did you not believe him? But if we say, Of human origin, we are afraid of the crowd; for all regard John as a prophet. So they answered Jesus, We do not know. And he said to them, Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things. What do you think? A man had two sons; he went to the first and said, Son, go and work in the vineyard today. He answered, I will not ; but later he changed his mind and went. The father went to the second and said the same; and he answered, I go, sir ; but he did not go. Which of the two did the will of his father? They said, The first. Jesus said to them, Truly I tell you, the tax-collectors and the prostitutes are going into the kingdom of God ahead of you. For John came to you in the way of righteousness and you did not believe him, but the tax-collectors and the prostitutes believed him; and even after you saw it, you did not change your minds and believe him. (Matthew 21:23-32) The Gospel of Christ. Praise be to thee, O Christ. 9

5 A Reading from the Letter of Paul to the Philippians 8:15 If then there is any encouragement in Christ, any consolation from love, any sharing in the Spirit, any compassion and sympathy, make my joy complete: be of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility regard others as better than yourselves. Let each of you look not to your own interests, but to the interests of others. Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death even death on a cross. Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Therefore, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed me, not only in my presence, but much more now in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who is at work in you, enabling you both to will and to work for his good pleasure. (Philippians 2:1-13) 8 Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church. Thanks be to God. Don & Roslyn Butler & Gaye Moffett Coordinators A Reading from the Book of Exodus 8:15 From the wilderness of Sin the whole congregation of the Israelites journeyed by stages, as the LORD commanded. They camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink. The people quarrelled with Moses, and said, Give us water to drink. Moses said to them, Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you test the LORD? But the people thirsted there for water; and the people complained against Moses and said, Why did you bring us out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and livestock with thirst? So Moses cried out to the LORD, What shall I do with this people? They are almost ready to stone me. The LORD said to Moses, Go on ahead of the people, and take some of the elders of Israel with you; take in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go. I will be standing there in front of you on the rock at Horeb. Strike the rock, and water will come out of it, so that the people may drink. Moses did so, in the sight of the elders of Israel. He called the place Massah and Meribah, because the Israelites quarrelled and tested the LORD, saying, Is the LORD among us or not? (Exodus 17:1-7) Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church. Thanks be to God. 6 7
