Sidesperson and Reader: Sheila Perry Lay Administrator: Jane Billings The Calendar Forgive us as we forgive Forgiveness does not come easily. I will forgive, but I will not forget, we say. Our recent gospel readings have reminded us that the forgiven may not forgive. As if forgiveness is leverage. St Germaine Cousin was a Cinderella saint. Born in 1579 near Toulouse, her mother gave her life for her child. Her unloving father and stepmother separated her from the family, making her sleep in the barn or under the stairs. She was fed scraps from the table. She was sent to guard the sheep, where, in the country, she became aware of the surrounding presence of God. Daily she left her flock to hear Mass, confident that they would be protected by a guardian angel. She shared her meagre food with beggars, and, of course, her domestic situation, though unobtrusive, became known. The bitterness shown by her family did not let up. Her holiness was demonstrated directly to her stepmother when, in winter, demanding to see what Germaine was carrying in her apron, and suspecting she had hidden bread there for someone else, a cascade of spring flowers fell from the folds. She was 22 when she died, one night under the stairs. Her grace and example of continuing forgiveness is why we remember her. Forgive as we forgive: the prayer you give us Comes home so close yet radiates so far. We set the limits on our own forgiveness, As generous or grudging as we are. The wounds we give and take in all our weakness, The injuries that smoulder, burning slow, The sins that others visited upon us, Are ours to hold or utterly let go. You tell the story of the wretched debtor, The one forgiven everything he owed, Who then exacted payment, to the letter, From one who could not bear the given load. Armstrong Home: Bob, Phyllis. 4 A Reading from the Letter of Paul to the Galatians For freedom Christ has set us free. Stand firm, therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery. For you were called to freedom, brothers and sisters; only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for selfindulgence, but through love become slaves to one another. For the whole law is summed up in a single commandment, "You shall love your neighbour as yourself." If, however, you bite and devour one another, take care that you are not consumed by one another. Live by the Spirit, I say, and do not gratify the desires of the flesh. For what the flesh desires is opposed to the Spirit, and what the Spirit desires is opposed to the flesh; for these are opposed to each other, to prevent you from doing what you want. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not subject to the law. Now the works of the flesh are obvious: fornication, impurity, licentiousness, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, anger, quarrels, dissensions, factions, envy, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these. I am warning you, as I warned you before: those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. By contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against such things. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also be guided by the Spirit. In the case of an emergency, please leave a detailed message and your call will be returned as soon as possible. July 3 We move to one weekly service at 9:30 a.m. Regular service times resume on September 11. Altar Flowers Each week two floral arrangements will be placed in the Sanctuary. To contribute to these flowers to celebrate an event or to remember a loved one, consult the flower chart in the parish hall to select a date and then contact Ruth Honeyman in the Parish Office, , to confirm & provide details for the bulletin. Bazaar News Please Mark Your Calendars! St Bart s Bazaar will be held on Saturday, November 5, Thank you all for your help in the past to make our Bazaar one of the most enjoyable events of the year. 6 Our Syrian Family Volunteer Drivers Wanted St. Bart s Refugee Committee is seeking volunteer drivers, with their own vehicles, to occasionally help our Syrian family get to important appointments or events. This could involve, for example, taking some family members to medical, dental and education appointments, language classes, grocery stores, or community and church events. From time to time, emergency rides may be necessary. Our Syrian Family Getting Ready Preparations are well underway for welcoming our Syrian refugee family. While we still don t know exactly when our family of five will arrive, we have identified our clothing and furniture needs and are now putting out the call for some new and gently used donations. Elijah said to Elisha, "Stay here; for the Lord has sent me as far as Bethel." But Elisha said, "As the Lord lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you." So they went down to Bethel. Then Elijah said to him, "Stay here; for the Lord has sent me to the Jordan." But he said, "As the Lord lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you." So the two of them went on. Fifty men of the company of prophets also went, and stood at some distance from them, as they both were standing by the Jordan. Then Elijah took his mantle and rolled it up, and struck the water; the water was parted to the one side and to the other, until the two of them crossed on dry ground. When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, "Tell me what I may do for you, before I am taken from you." Elisha said, "Please let me inherit a double share of your spirit." He responded, "You have asked a hard thing; yet, if you see me as I am being taken from you, it will be granted you; if not, it will not." Elisha kept watching and crying out, "Father, father! The chariots of Israel and its horsemen!" But when he could no longer see him, he grasped his own clothes and tore them in two pieces. He picked up the mantle of Elijah that had fallen from him, and went back and stood on the bank of the Jordan.
