The Calendar St Michael and All Angels St Hyacinth ( ), Missionary Today is Michaelmas Day, a Holy Day to celebrate the work of angels and archangels. Angels (from the Greek word for messenger) are celestial beings. Nine orders of angels are identified in the Bible, separated into three hierarchies of three choirs each (The choirs of New Jerusalem). The lowest choirs Archangels and Angels, who have a direct mission to humanity. There are seven archangels, three of whom are known by name. St Michael is the senior Archangel, and the helper of armies fighting evil and of individuals at the time of death (Michael, row the boat ashore). St Michael dominates our war memorial window, with angels accompanying the fallen to the gates of heaven. Rarely are the angels recognized as saints. Our organ was built in St Hyacinthe, named for Jacek Odrowaz, a Polish nobleman, educated in Prague and Bologna, who was taken by his uncle the bishop of Cracow to visit Rome in about There Jacek met St Dominic, whose preaching and healing made a great impression upon him. (Dominic had just raised Napoleon Orsini back to life.) Jacek and three others who had come with him from Poland entered Dominic s convent to be trained as friars, aiming to return to Poland and rejuvenate the church. In 1220 Jacek received his habit directly from Dominic. Jacek was appointed the superior of the small group, and in 1221 set off home. They travelled slowly, assisting the dioceses through which they passed; in Carinthia even establishing a convent. In Poland they established the first of five Dominican houses at Cracow, and began to travel the country, preaching, tending the sick, and supporting the poor wherever they could. Several miracles of healing are attributed to Jacek, as well as other signs, such as walking across rivers. He certainly travelled to Scandinavia to spread the gospel, and for this reason he is known as the Apostle of the North. In Poland he is St Iachho, Jacek being a diminutive of Jacob, but in the 16 th century, before his canonization in 1594, his name was changed by a biographer to Jacinthus, hence we know him as Hyacinth. Submitted by Chris Burn. 11

3 A Reading from Book of Revelation War broke out in heaven; Michael and his angels fought against the dragon. The dragon and his angels fought back, but they were defeated, and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. The great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the Devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him. Then I heard a loud voice in heaven, proclaiming, Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Messiah, for the accuser of our comrades has been thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our God. But they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they did not cling to life even in the face of death. Rejoice then, you heavens and those who dwell in them! But woe to the earth and the sea, for the devil has come down to you with great wrath, because he knows that his time is short! (Revelation 12:7 12) The Gospel Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church. Thanks be to God. The Holy Gospel is written in the first chapter of the Gospel according to Saint John beginning at the 47th verse. (BCP) Glory be to thee, O Lord. (BCP) The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. (BAS) Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. (BAS) When Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him, he said of him, Here is truly an Israelite in whom there is no deceit! Nathanael asked him, Where did you get to know me? Jesus answered, I saw you under the fig tree before Philip called you. Nathanael replied, Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel! Jesus answered, Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than these. And he said to him, Very truly, I tell you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man. (John 1:47-51) The Gospel of Christ. Praise be to thee, O Christ. (BCP) Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. (BAS) St. Michael and All Angels September 29, :30 a. m. Co-Chairs St Bart s 150th Anniversary/GIFT Bonnie Robinson & Rob Nelson Collect of the Day Priest O Lord God Almighty, whose glory cherubim and seraphim and all the hosts of heaven with ceaseless voice proclaim: Today, as we remember St Michael and all Angels hear and accept the praise of your Church below; and most particularly the praise that this pipe organ will sound forth this day and for years to come. Pour down upon your church of St Bartholomew such a spirit of faith, reverence and joy as shall lift both hymns and lives to you; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Bedard The Intercessions Address: Grant McDonald, Chair of the Organ Committee & Barbara Hallam-Price, Organist & Director of Music The Dedication and Blessing of the Létourneau Pipe Organ The Presentation Representatives of our parish, the Wardens, Co-Chairs of GIFT campaign, and Chair of the Organ Committee say: Father David, on behalf of the people of the Church of St Bartholomew, we present this pipe organ for dedication and blessing. The work of human hands and the gift of the people of this parish, it is given to the greater glory of God. Rector: My brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus: Forasmuch as God has put into our hearts the will to build this pipe organ as an aid to the worship of him in this holy place, it is right that we should now dedicate it to him and set it apart to the holy use for which it is designed. These Sentences are then said by the Rector and the congregation responds

4 V. O Father of all who art wisdom and beauty and goodness, O Lord Jesus Christ, the eternal Son made known in human flesh, O Holy Spirit, ever striving to bring into unity all that is broken and disfigured: V. For the beauty of creation, for the richness of life in countless forms, for all that sustains our lives: V. Because you have made us in you own image, and called us to share in the work of creating, bringing the gifts of reason, skill, and talent to the service of others: V. For this pipe organ that will sound forth in beauty and glory, humbling the heart before the eternal mysteries and lifting the soul to abiding joy: V. For inspiring people to offer praise in music and song and to go forth from this place with high resolve to do God s will: V. For those who have given of their means so that our worship might be a more perfect offering for thy glory: R. We praise thee, O God. V. As we dedicate this pipe organ, that it may kindle the flame of devotion, comfort the sorrowful, cheer the faint-hearted, bring purity and peace into our hearts, and lead all who hear it in the way of eternal life: Rector: Let us pray. O Lord, before whose throne trumpets sound, and saints and angels sing the songs of Moses and the Lamb: we thank you that you have so made us that by music our hearts can be lifted up to you. Accept this pipe organ which we dedicate to you, that with the voice of music we may proclaim your praise. Grant that your people in this place and all who shall enjoy the benefit of this good work, may serve you with gladness and show forth your praise in triumphant songs. Let your glory fill this place, and your Spirit dwell in the hearts of your people, that they shall sing your praise in spirit and in truth, joining the heavenly chorus who sing the eternal song of triumph. And now, bless this organ, we pray you, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, that it may be set apart and consecrated for the praise of you: these things we ask in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom with you, Father, and the Holy Spirit, praise is given for ever and ever. Amen. Adapted from Keble College, Oxford from 1723 until his death in the finest musicians would collaborate with Handel the chamber musician. Britain s London Handel Players recreate such a musical soirée at St Bart s. Reception to follow. Tickets available after services today or at the office. General: 40 Senior: 35 & Students:15 Oct. 29, 7:30 p.m. Multi-Media Presentation at St Bart s Margaret Tudor The English Rose of the Scottish Court When we think of Anglo-Scottish relations in the medieval period, images of antagonism often come to mind - stories of Braveheart and border wars tend to dominate our imagination. However, as the life of Margaret Tudor reveals, the bonds between Scotland & England were at times more cordial and complex. The daughter of Henry VII and the sister of Henry VIII, Margaret's marriage to James IV of Scotland in 1503 signalled a period of detente between the two kingdoms. The Tudor-Stewart union coincided with a flourishing of Scottish culture both within the court and in the kingdom at large - and, of course, would eventually lead to a Scot assuming the English throne a century later. In this presentation, Scotticist Chelsea Honeyman will use words, images & music to illuminate the story of Margaret in Scotland. Afterwards, join us for a Tudor-themed reception for food, drink and chat! Tickets: $25 Students $10 Available after services today or at the office. A Reading from the Book of Genesis Jacob left Beersheba and went toward Haran. He came to a certain place and stayed there for the night, because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones of the place, he put it under his head and lay down in that place. And he dreamed that there was a ladder set up on the earth, the top of it reaching to heaven; and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. And the Lord stood beside him and said, I am the Lord, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie I will give to you and to your offspring; and your offspring shall be like the dust of the earth, and you shall spread abroad to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south; and all the families of the earth shall be blessed in you and in your offspring. Know that I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you. Then Jacob woke from his sleep and said, Surely the Lord is in this place and I did not know it! And he was afraid and said, How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven. (Genesis 28:10-17) Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church. Thanks be to God

5 Stewardship Corner The GIFT (Growing in Faith Together) & 150th Anniversary Committee has continued to meet, and now has a new name: St. Bart s 150th Anniversary/GIFT Continuation & Stewardship Committee. Our goal is to advance the spiritual and pastoral work of the parish, and to focus on stewardship. Reporting to Corporation, our role is to provide leadership in assessing the stewardship needs of the parish, and to encourage those with appropriate gifts to be involved as needed. There will be regular stewardship events and programs, and ongoing communication about the financial needs of the parish. As we come together as a parish each September, we all need to think about our regular weekly givings. At the present time at St. Bart s, regular givings are not meeting our 2013 approved budget, and we hope you will all give prayerful consideration to the needs of the parish. Our new organ, renovated and leveled floor and very green lawn give us a lot to celebrate! As we go forward into the fall we give thanks for all our blessings and the fellowship of this dynamic parish. At his home at 25 Brook Street- 8 The Peace Offertory Hymn: And Did Those Feet Jerusalem And did those feet in ancient time walk upon England s mountains green? And was the holy Lamb of God on England s pleasant pastures seen? And did the countenance divine shine forth upon our clouded hills? And was Jerusalem builded here among these dark satanic mills? Bring me my bow of burning gold: bring me my arrows of desire: Bring me my spear: O clouds unfold! Bring me my chariot of fire. I will not cease from mental fight nor shall my sword sleep in my hand, Till we have built Jerusalem in England s green and pleasant land. Therefore with all the company of heaven we raise our voices to proclaim the glory of your name. St Bart s Sunday Morning Programs for Children and Youth Our Nursery, for infants & children up to the age of 3, is open in the hall from 10:15 until after coffee hour. Julia Laku Coordinator Sunday School, for children ages 4-13, is held in the parish hall during the 10:30 service. Carole Schmidt Coordinator Music Notes for the Dedication of the Létourneau Organ The music today has been specifically chosen to show the versatility of our new organ, not only as a solo instrument but also as an accompanying instrument. The service will start with Prelude in G Major (BWV 541) and the fugue will be played as the postlude. This is a vivacious and joyous combination of two pieces. They are technically demanding because of fast pedal work and each hand having its own separate line. If one listens, you can hear how the fugue is introduced by the right hand, followed by the pedal and then by the left hand. Melodia is a work written for solo flute and organ. We are most fortunate to have flutist Phoebe Robertson here this morning to play this lovely piece. Phoebe is a first year flute major at the University of Ottawa. This piece features the flute as soloist, at times the organ as soloist and then the organ accompanying the flute. Often the flutist is playing high up in their range with rich organ chords supporting beneath. The composer of this piece is Denis Bédard, a Canadian from Quebec City. He has an active career as an organ recitalist as well as a composer, and is the recipient of numerous awards. His music is performed all over the world. Denis was organist at St-Coeur-de Marie church in Quebec City for 19 years. Since September 2001, he is organist and music director of Holy Rosary Cathedral in Vancouver, B.C. The two choral works that we will hear this morning are Anton Bruckner s Locus Iste and O how amiable by Ralph Vaughan Williams. Locus Iste was written for the dedication of a church so I am taking some liberties here as we are dedicating an organ. I think the words are fitting as the translation states: This place was made by God. Obviously, this wonderful instrument is to the Glory of God as well. The words for this motet are taken from Genesis 28:17. They are Jacob s words upon waking from his vision. O how amiable, originally composed by R. Vaughan Williams ( ) for military band accompaniment, was later arranged for organ by the composer. It sets biblical texts from Psalm 84 and 90 and closes with the hymn, O God our Help in Ages Past. In 1890, R. Vaughan Williams studied with Charles Stanford at the Royal College of Music in London - an interesting connection, as this morning the psalm setting is by Stanford.
