Sidesperson and Reader: Jo Brodie Lay Administrator: Meriel Bradford 2 The Calendar St. Augustine of Canterbury (d. 604 or 605), Archbishop Augustine was the first Archbishop of Canterbury. He was in Rome in 596, Prior of St Andrew s monastery, when Pope Gregory the Great resolved to send a mission to Britain to reclaim the country for Christ. Pagan Angles, Saxons, and Jutes had conquered Britain after the Romans left, and the Celtic Christians had been pushed into the West Country and Wales. Gregory may have been moved by seeing fair-haired Angles for sale in the slave market. Not Angles, but angels, he said (perhaps). Augustine set off with a band of monks, but had disciplinary problems in Gaul and wanted to turn back. Gregory sent them letters of encouragement and had Augustine consecrated bishop to seal his authority. They landed in Kent in 597, and met Ethelbert, the king, who slowly warmed to them, even though his wife was already a Christian, and he converted in 601. Ethelbert had allowed the missionaries to preach, but Gregory instructed them not to take provocative acts, so, for example, Augustine did not tear down temples, but only destroyed idols. He took pagan festivals and turned them into Christian celebrations. Augustine established a monastery and cathedral at Canterbury. Gregory s vision was for two provinces in Britain, with the northern Archbishop at York, each having 12 suffragan bishops. But Augustine concentrated on consolidating the church in Kent and did not venture far afield, founding a monastery and cathedral at Canterbury. He probably used St Martin s, the oldest church in the country. Augustine helped the king write the earliest Anglo-Saxon laws that have survived and he had powers of healing, but he consulted Gregory on many little things, so it is unlikely he was an effective administrator. His attempts to bring Celtic Christians into the Roman fold were unsuccessful. A story relates that the Celts were wary of Augustine, and consulted a wise hermit before they met him. The hermit suggested that if the Archbishop stood up to greet them, then he was a humble man, but if he remained seated he was arrogant. Unfortunately, Augustine stayed in his chair, and the reconciliation only occurred 60 years later after the Synod of Whitby. Augustine died on May 26, 604 or 605. Submitted by Chris Burn 11

5 A Reading from the Book of Acts In the first book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus did and taught from the beginning until the day when he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. After his suffering he presented himself alive to them by many convincing proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God. While staying with them, he ordered them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait there for the promise of the Father. This, he said, is what you have heard from me; for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now. So when they had come together, they asked him, Lord, is this the time when you will restore the kingdom to Israel? He replied, It is not for you to know the times or periods that the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. When he had said this, as they were watching, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. While he was going and they were gazing up toward heaven, suddenly two men in white robes stood by them. They said, Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up toward heaven? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven. (Acts 1:1 11) 8 Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church. Thanks be to God.
