The word aumbry comes from Middle English from Old French armarie. It is used to hold consecrated bread and wine. 3 The Calendar John Horden ( ), Missionary Bishop John Horden, the first bishop of Moosonee, is commemorated on January 12 th. That may have been a month ago, but I am writing this in Moose Factory, so he is close to mind. Horden was born and brought up in Exeter, southwest England, and determined his vocation for missionary work while still a boy. He apprenticed as a blacksmith, but studied Latin and Greek in his spare time, becoming a schoolmaster. In 1850 he offered himself to the Church Missionary Society, and on 10 th May 1851 he was asked to go to Moose Factory, following an appeal by the Hudson s Bay Company to the CMS. He was asked to take a wife with him too, so two weeks later he married Elizabeth Oke, and on the 8 th June they embarked for James Bay. For the next 40 years he lived in Moose Factory, travelling all around the Bay, and establishing schools and churches in partnership with other missionaries. His great contributions were translations of the scriptures, hymns and the Book of Common Prayer into Cree and Ojibwa, and he compiled the first Cree grammar. He started to learn Cree on the passage out, and within a year had great competence and fluency in the language. He also spoke Inuktitut and Chipewyan. In 1853 he received a printing press (without operating instructions), because English printers of his translations had no ability to proof-read their work, and decided he had better do the printing himself. He considered both Indigenous and settlers to be his people, and learned Norwegian to speak with a number of people then working locally for the HBC. The Bay built the church (St Thomas, after his church in Exeter) at Moose Factory. In 1872 he was consecrated the first Bishop of Moosonee, a diocese that then extended around the shores of Hudson Bay. He held his See for 20 years, although in 1882 Elizabeth remained in England after a furlough. The CMS wanted him to establish a church with native leadership quickly, but Horden was not as hasty, because of the reluctance he perceived in most Europeans to take Indigenous leaders seriously and the financial importance for a missionary diocese of solid connections with England. He did appoint Thomas Vincent, a Métis, as his Archdeacon, but Thomas was passed over as his successor. Horden died at Moose Factory, and is buried here next to one of his daughters. He was greatly loved and respected. His is the first Canadian memorial of our year. Currently the Anglican Church in Moose Factory is looked after by Rev Norm Westley, a priest and member of the Moose Cree First Nation. 5 A Reading from the First Letter of Paul to the Corinthians And so, brothers and sisters, I could not speak to you as spiritual people, but rather as people of the flesh, as infants in Christ. I fed you with milk, not solid food, for you were not ready for solid food. Even now you are still not ready, for you are still of the flesh. For as long as there is jealousy and quarrelling among you, are you not of the flesh, and behaving according to human inclinations? For when one says, "I belong to Paul," and another, "I belong to Apollos," are you not merely human? What then is Apollos? What is Paul? Servants through whom you came to believe, as the Lord assigned to each. I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth. The one who plants and the one who waters have a common purpose, and each will receive wages according to the labour of each. Farewell to our Sunday School Teachers Chelsea Honeyman and Meiping MacIsaac are retiring as our Sunday School teachers. They have done wonderful work for us in our Children s ministry. Thursday Mornings Silent Meditation and Bible Study Meditation is held in the church at 8:00 & Bible Study in the hall at 10:00.
