Sidesperson and Reader: Rosemary MacDonald Lay Administrator: Brian Eckert The Calendar A Lenten Journey The time we spend in Lent is commonly described as a journey. The metaphor implies our time should be purposeful. Most journeys we take are through space, but they are about places, changing places. Each Sunday I look for where our hymns and the psalm will take us. The words often weave Palestine into our thoughts, while many tunes are named geographically. Last week it was Wiltshire, evoking for me the great spire of Salisbury Cathedral and the paintings of John Constable, for others it might have been Stonehenge and the immensity of human time. This week it is County Meath in Ireland, where, NNE of Dublin, is the town of Slane. Next week it should be Bemerton, the tune named for the village where George Herbert s rectory is. (The tune is also called Caswall). Herbert was the rector at Bemerton with Fugglestone, within sight of Salisbury Cathedral, from April 26 th, 1630 until his death on February 27 th, He is buried in St Andrew s Church there, where he wished to rest. His short time as a country parson was his interim destination in a life truncated by consumption (TB). He is most well-known for his poetry, but he also left us a short book, A Priest to the Temple or the Country Parson, started as an intention for his clerical service, but finished in 1632 after experience of the work. It has 37 short chapters, and was for over 200 years the only guide available for clergy toward their profession. While some of it bears the imprint of its time, much is still directly relevant and not just for the clergy. Its emphasis is intensely practical and on the Dignity and the Duty of a priest (or a Christian). It is infused with Love, but points out dangers, both practical and spiritual, that remain ever present, especially that of drinking, because it is the most popular vice. Throughout, Herbert s thoughts turn to how he can help people better encounter the presence of Jesus, whom he called My Master, through visiting, conversation, healing, and feeding. He does not shy away from sin and judgement, topics that we seem uncomfortable facing today, but he ends with powerful words about practical forgiveness, in a final chapter that deals with gossip, especially concerning public sins. (I)f the punished delinquent shall be much troubled for his sins, and turne quite another man, doubtlesse then also mens affections and words must turne, and forbear to speak of that, which God himself hath forgotten.
