Sidesperson and Reader: Ann Wesch Lay Administrator: Barbara Konst The Calendar Christ the King The feast of Christ the King is a recent innovation in the calendar, established only in 1925 by Pope Pius XI, and moved to its present place, the last Sunday before Advent, in George Herbert recognized Jesus as his King, Teach me my God and King he wrote in his poem The Elixir, one of his hymns we sing occasionally. The Book of Common Prayer s lesson for today is from Jeremiah 23: I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgement and justice in the earth. Some of what we shall think about in Advent, especially the Second Coming, is about the return of Christ as King. But while he was with us on Earth, Jesus did not want to be a king. In the wilderness he rebuffed Satan, who had offered Him the kingdoms of the world (Matt. 4: 8). After feeding the 5,000, He withdrew to a mountain, as He sensed the crowd were about to come and take Him by force to make Him king (Jn. 6: 15). And when talking with Pilate, He made clear that His kingdom is not of this world, or not the sort we find in this world. In 1941, William Temple, then Archbishop of York, brought together a synod of the Church of England in Malvern, near the hills where William Langland had received his vision of Piers Plowman. Langland s great poem of the 14 th century told the English to look for Jesus at work in the fields as an ordinary man, growing food for his neighbours, and not in corrupted institutions or wealthy abbeys. In Temple s synod the church pondered how to nurture a social gospel, in opposition to the National Socialism then holding Europe in its grip, and the inadequacies of capitalism exposed in the Great Depression. It was a vision of God s kingdom on Earth, which we may find spelled out by St Matthew (25: 34-36): Then the King will say to those at his right hand, Come, O blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink; I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me. We may find God s kingdom where we least expect it. It is where we meet Christ s spirit. It is not a set of rules. Submitted by Chris Burn 11

Then the king will say to those at his right hand, 'Come, you that are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.' Then the righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry and gave you food, or thirsty and gave you something to drink? Then he will say to those at his left hand, 'You that are accursed, depart from me into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels; for I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not give me clothing, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.' Then they also will answer, 'Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not take care of you?' Then he will answer them, 'Truly I tell you, just as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.' 6 December 2 Malcolm Guite in Ottawa Some of us may remember the sonnets of Malcolm Guite that we have heard at our recent Advent carol services. Malcolm is the chaplain of Girton College, Cambridge. We have included some of his poetry in the Calendar of our bulletin. He will be coming to Ottawa on Saturday, December 2nd, to be part of an evening concert Songs and Sonnets at Dominion-Chalmers church. Urgent Myanmar Crisis Relief Fund Rohingya Refugees More than a half million Rohingya refugees have fled extreme violence in Myanmar. This rapidly growing humanitarian crisis leaves hundreds of thousands in urgent need. PWRDF is contributing to a food relief project in Bangladesh, providing emergency rations for three months to 18,000 Rohingya refugees in the Cox s Bazar region. Note: The Canadian Government will match donations to the Rohingya Relief effort on a 1:1 basis until November 28th. Please contribute using the PWRDF envelope found in the pew.
