Today we dedicate the memorial plaques describing our newly mounted Regimental Colours. We thank Tony and Joan Kellett & Bryan Brulotte for their generous support. New Ottawa street named after Admiral Ralph Hennessy Last Wednesday evening Mayor Watson presented the Hennessy family with a new street sign to be installed on Ralph Hennessy Ave in a new development in SE Ottawa. A Naming Program has been in place in Ottawa whereby each year a revered veteran is chosen. Admiral Ralph Hennessy s career was remembered by the mayor. On behalf of the family, Diana Hennessy gave a moving acceptance speech. This took place at the War Museum at a candlelight service given by our mayor and the new Minister of Veterans Affairs, Kent Hehr. Hundreds of veterans and their families, along with a great many cadets and high school students, were in attendance. 3 old. The third member had been a member of the Middlesex Regiment, but travelled to Europe as Captain in Princess Patricia s Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI). On the night of 8/9 January Capt. Denzil O.C. Newton wandered into No Man s Land near Vierstraat, and when returning to his trenches did not reply to the sentry s challenges. He died on the 9 th of wounds from the sentry s shot. He was the first officer of PPCLI killed in action. Capt. the Hon. John Campbell of the Coldstream Guards, was killed on 25 January 1915 at Cuinchy, Pas de Calais. The fifth may have been the man whose death moved Prince Arthur to commission the window. Major Francis Farquhar of the Coldstream Guards was the Governor-General s Military Secretary from October 1913 and lived at Rideau Cottage with his wife Evelyn. He raised the PPCLI with Capt. A.H. Gault in August 1914, leading them as Temporary Lt. Col. to Britain and then across the Channel as the first part of the Canadian Expeditionary Force. He was killed on 20 March 1915 by a sniper s bullet during battle at St. Eloi when, at night, he stood up above the trenches. His death was announced to the House of Commons by Prime Minister Borden. Less than two months later, Lt. Lord Spencer Compton of the Royal Horse Guards, also ADC to the Duke, died on 13 May 1915 during the Second Battle of Ypres. Even an officer of the state, used to hard decisions, could not but be moved by such losses of his colleagues and friends. By early August 1915 Wilhelmina Geddes, a member of the Tower of Glass artists cooperative in Dublin had been asked to create our window and had begun to design it. It is a military memorial, with each figure representing armies on Earth or in Heaven. When it was unveiled by the Prince of Wales in 1919, a gasp swept through the congregation. Stained glass in its style had not been seen in Canada before. It is a tribute to human heroism. Arrigo Dedication of Plaques for Regimental Colours Gracious God, today we dedicate these explanatory plaques which describe our two stands of the Regimental Colours of the Governor General's Foot Guards. We give thanks for the service and faithfulness they represent and the sacrifices made for our country. Amen. The Prayers of the People In our prayers today we remember the church throughout the world and our Anglican Communion especially those churches and congregations listed in our prayer cycles on p.6. Standing, sitting or kneeling I invite you to join in our prayers, with the refrain 3

4 Let us pray for the peace of the world: the Lord grant that we may live together in justice and faith. Let us pray for this country, and especially for Queen Elizabeth, the Governor General, the Prime Minister, and all in authority: the Lord help them to serve these people according to his holy will. Let us pray for our Bishop John and the Diocese of Ottawa, its clergy and people. Let us pray for our Canadian Armed Forces and their families and our veterans who have and still do serve their country. In this place today let us especially remember the members of the Princess Patricia s Canadian Light Infantry, The Governor General s Foot Guards and those in diplomatic missions and NGOs. Let us pray for the sick, those listed in our bulletin and those known to each of us. Those wounded in battle who are still recovering. For those known to God alone, the Lord deliver them and keep them in his love. Let us pray for all who are condemned to exile, prison, harsh treatment, or hard labour, for the sake of justice and truth: the Lord support them and keep them steadfast. Let us remember all who have died. At this time we especially remember those fallen in battle, and all innocents who have died. Let us pray for the absolution and remission of our sins and offences. Priest: The Peace of the Lord be always with you. All: And also with you. It is acceptable to exchange the Peace without shaking hands. A warm smile when saying, "The peace of Christ" conveys a genuine sense of Christian fellowship. Glory be to thee, O Lord. At that time the festival of the Dedication took place in Jerusalem. It was winter, and Jesus was walking in the temple, in the portico of Solomon. So the Jews gathered around him and said to him, How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly. Jesus answered, I have told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in my Father s name testify to me; but you do not believe, because you do not belong to my sheep. My sheep hear my voice. I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one will snatch them out of my hand. What my Father has given me is greater than all else, and no one can snatch it out of the Father s hand. The Father and I are one. (John 10:22-30) The Gospel of Christ. Praise be to thee, O Christ. The Calendar Remembrance Day By the 11 th of November 1915, six of the ten men for whom HRH Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught, commissioned our memorial window had been killed. They were all members of his staff, nobles and gentry, professional soldiers, all of them officers, most commissioned in regiments of Guards. Initially the war was expected to be short. The British Expeditionary Force, which landed on the continent in early autumn 1914, was expected to win, and win quickly. By January it had been decimated. Capt. T.H. Rivers-Bulkeley of the Scots Guards, Equerry to H.R.H. the Duke of Connaught and comptroller of Rideau Hall, was killed in the First Battle of Ypres on 22 October He had married Annie Evelyn Pelly here at St Bart s on 19 April 1913, and their son was born in mid-january Fifteen days later, one of the Governor-General s ADCs, Capt. Lord John Hamilton of the Irish Guards, who had returned to Britain as soon as war had broken out, was killed as the battle continued. He was 31 years 9

5 A Reading from the Book of Wisdom But the souls of the righteous are in the hand of God, and no torment will ever touch them. In the eyes of the foolish they seemed to have died, and their departure was thought to be a disaster, and their going from us to be their destruction; but they are at peace. For though in the sight of others they were punished, their hope is full of immortality. Having been disciplined a little, they will receive great good, because God tested them and found them worthy of himself; like gold in the furnace he tried them, and like a sacrificial burnt-offering he accepted them. In the time of their visitation they will shine forth, and will run like sparks through the stubble. They will govern nations and rule over peoples, and the Lord will reign over them for ever. Those who trust in him will understand truth, and the faithful will abide with him in love, because grace and mercy are upon his holy ones, and he watches over his elect. A Reading from the Letter to the Hebrews 8:15 service only For Christ did not enter a sanctuary made by human hands, a mere copy of the true one, but he entered into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God on our behalf. Nor was it to offer himself again and again, as the high priest enters the Holy Place year after year with blood that is not his own; for then he would have had to suffer again and again since the foundation of the world. But as it is, he has appeared once for all at the end of the age to remove sin by the sacrifice of himself. And just as it is appointed for mortals to die once, and after that the judgement, so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin, but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him.
