Sidesperson and Reader: Stephen Randall Lay Administrator: Jane Billings The Calendar The Heavenly Host We have an ambivalent relationship with angels. Some of us meet them in each other, especially when we hear of or see examples that are clearly demonstrations of God s love. Others are granted visions or reassuring voices, in this case of a being they consider to be a guardian. The names of these beings, if shared, are rarely ones we associate with our earthly friends. But very rarely do we hear of groups of angels or heavenly beings, except at Christmas. The Christmas angels were a multitude of the heavenly host (Lk 2: 13) and a single messenger telling Joseph to take his family to Egypt (Mt 2:13). When we receive a message, it normally comes from a single source, and most encounters with angels seem to be about messages. But in a few places in the Bible we read about armies of angels, the Sabaoth. These are the forces of the Lord with a recognizable command structure (Josh. 5: 13-15). They helped Joshua occupy the promised land and they fought a war in heaven (Rev. 12: 7). When we hear of them from the past or in heaven it is difficult to sense them tangibly. I only know one instance that does. It concerns Helen Roseveare ( ), a medical missionary in the Congo in the 1950s and the early 60s during the violent struggle for independence from Belgium. She and her medical staff were attacked several times, some killed, others, including Helen, raped. Rosalind Brown, recently retired as a Canon of Durham Cathedral wrote at one point in the Church Times: I remember when a teenager hearing the missionary Helen Roseveare describe watching Congolese rebels, advancing with intent to rape or kill her and her companions, then suddenly retreat. She discovered later that they feared the armed warriors that they saw encircling her house, warriors whom she never saw. Then friends wrote to ask why they had suddenly felt compelled to pray for her at that very moment. Dr Roseveare has a distant connection with St Barts, because at least two members of our community have a close association with the school where her niece was the Head Girl. The contrast between the great power of the Lord God of Sabaoth and the loving care that is extended to individuals is a tension that enriches our faith. We are not alone. Submitted by Chris Burn 11

Bright seraphim were standing round about, six wings had every of that quire devout; with twain he awesome veiled his face, and so with twain he dreadful veiled his feet below. With twain did he now hither, thither fly: And thus aloud did one to other cry: Holy is God, the Lord of Sabaoth, Full of his glory are earth and heaven, both. And at their cry the lintels moved apace, and clouds of incense filled the holy place. Prayer after Communion Eternal God, in you we find peace beyond all telling. 5 The Gospel The Holy Gospel is written in the fifth chapter of the Gospel according to Saint Luke beginning at the 1st verse. (BCP) Glory be to thee, O Lord. (BCP) The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. (BAS) Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. (BAS) Once while Jesus was standing beside the lake of Gennesaret, and the crowd was pressing in on him to hear the word of God, he saw two boats there at the shore of the lake; the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little way from the shore. Then he sat down and taught the crowds from the boat. When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, "Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch." Simon answered, "Master, we have worked all night long but have caught nothing. Yet if you say so, I will let down the nets." When they had done this, they caught so many fish that their nets were beginning to break. So they signalled their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both boats, so that they began to sink. But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, "Go away from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man!" For he and all who were with him were amazed at the catch of fish that they had taken; and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. Then Jesus said to Simon, "Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching people." When they had brought their boats to shore, they left everything and followed him. (Luke 5:1-11) A Reading from the Book of Isaiah In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lofty; and the hem of his robe filled the temple. Seraphs were in attendance above him; each had six wings: with two they covered their faces, and with two they covered their feet, and with two they flew. And one called to another and said: "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory." The pivots on the thresholds shook at the voices of those who called, and the house filled with smoke. And I said: "Woe is me! I am lost, for I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips; yet my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!" Then one of the seraphs flew to me, holding a live coal that had been taken from the altar with a pair of tongs. The seraph touched my mouth with it and said: "Now that this has touched your lips, your guilt has departed and your sin is blotted out." Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, "Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?" And I said, "Here am I; send me!" (Isaiah 6:1-8) Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church. Thanks be to God. The Gospel of Christ. Praise be to thee, O Christ. (BCP) Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. (BAS) 8 5
6 Psalm 138 I will give thanks to you, O Lord, with my whole heart; before the gods I will sing your praise. I will bow down toward your holy temple and praise your name, because of your love and faithfulness; Refrain. For you have glorified your name and your word above all things. When I called, you answered me; you increased my strength within me. Refrain. All the kings of the earth will praise you, O Lord, when they have heard the words of your mouth. They will sing of the ways of the Lord, that great is the glory of the Lord. Refrain. Though the Lord be high, he cares for the lowly; he perceives the haughty from afar. Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you keep me safe, you stretch forth your hand against the fury of my enemies; your right hand shall save me. The Lord will make good his purpose for me; O Lord, your love endures for ever; do not abandon the works of your hands. Refrain. A Reading from the First Letter of Paul to the Corinthians Now I would remind you, brothers and sisters, of the good news that I proclaimed to you, which you in turn received, in which also you stand, through which also you are being saved, if you hold firmly to the message that I proclaimed to you unless you have come to believe in vain. For I handed on to you as of first importance what I in turn had received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures, and that he was buried, and that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers and sisters at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have died. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. Last of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me. For I am the least of the apostles, unfit to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me has not been in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them - though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me. Whether then it was I or they, so we proclaim and so you have come to believe. (1 Corinthians 5:1-11) Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church. Thanks be to God. Gradual Hymn Here I Am Lord I, the Lord of sea and sky, I have heard my people cry. All who dwell in deepest sin, my hand will save. I who made the stars of night, I will make their darkness bright. Who will bear my light to them? Whom shall I send? Refrain: Here I am, Lord. Is it I, Lord? I have heard you calling in the night. I will go, Lord, if you lead me. I will hold your people in my heart. I, the Lord of snow and rain, I have borne my people s pain, I have wept for love of them, they turn away. I will break their hearts of stone, give them hearts for love alone. I will speak my word to them. Whom shall I send? Refrain: Here I am, Lord. Is it I, Lord? I have heard you calling in the night. I will go, Lord, if you lead me. I will hold your people in my heart. I, the Lord of wind and flame, I will tend the poor and lame, I will set a feast for them, my hand will save. Finest bread I will provide till their hearts be satisfied. I will give my life to them. Whom shall I send? Refrain: Here I am, Lord. Is it I, Lord? I have heard you calling in the night. I will go, Lord, if you lead me. I will hold your people in my heart. 6 7
