3 The Calendar St Paulinus (d. 644), Bishop Paulinus was the first Bishop of York, who came to Britain with the second group of missionaries that Pope Gregory the Great sent from Rome, arriving by about 604. He began his work in Kent along with the rest of the mission, having considerable success with the common people and at court. About twenty years into the mission he was asked to accompany Ethelburga, sister of the king of Kent, to Northumbria where she was to marry King Edwin. There was considerable discussion before the marriage, because Christians were not to marry pagans, but Edwin promised that Ethelburga could follow her conscience, and that he would study her religion. Paulinus went along as Ethelburga s chaplain, but returned south to be consecrated as bishop in York, perhaps in 625. Enjoying royal protection, Paulinus travelled widely within Northumbria, as far south as Lincoln, converting large numbers. His work led to Edwin s baptism in 627, which was followed by that of many of the nobility. Edwin s reign was sufficiently peaceful that a woman could carry her new born baby across the island from sea to sea and suffer no harm. Unfortunately, Edwin was killed in a battle with the Welsh in 633, and Paulinus brought Ethelburga, with her family, back to Kent by ship. By then Pope Honorius had decided to send him a pallium, the symbol of an archbishop s authority, showing that York was to be the second archbishopric in Britain. Paulinus did not return to York, but from 633 until his death on October 10th, 644, served as bishop of Rochester. Bede wrote that Paulinus was a tall man with a slight stoop, who had black hair, a thin face and a narrow aquiline nose, his presence being venerable and awe-inspiring. His most significant act may have been baptizing Hilda, later the influential abbess of Whitby, around the time that Edwin had converted. Rae Fletcher, Gabrielle, Gordon, Heather, Helen & John Starnes, Ian, 4 The Gospel The Holy Gospel is written in the sixth chapter of the Gospel according to Saint Matthew beginning at the 25th verse. Glory be to thee, O Lord. Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air; they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And can any of you by worrying add a single hour to your span of life? And why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you-you of little faith? Therefore do not worry, saying, What will we eat? or What will we drink? or What will we wear? For it is the Gentiles who strive for all these things; and indeed your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. (Matthew 6:25-33) The Gospel of Christ. Praise be to thee, O Christ. 9
5 Psalm 100 1) O be joyful in the Lord, all ye lands: / serve The Lord with gladness, and come before his presence with a song. 2) Be ye sure that the Lord, he is God; / it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. 3) O go your way into his gates with thanksgiving, and into hic courts with praise; / be thankful unto him, and speak good of his name. 4) For the Lord is gracious, his mercy is everlasting; / and his truth endureth from generation to generation. A Reading from the First Letter of Timothy First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings should be made for everyone, for kings and all who are in high positions, so that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and dignity. This is right and is acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour, who desires everyone to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God; there is also one mediator between God and humankind, Christ Jesus, himself human, who gave himself a ransom for all -this was attested at the right time. For this I was appointed a herald and an apostle (I am telling the truth, I am not lying), a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth. (1 Timothy 2:1-7) 8 Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church. Thanks be to God. Janet, Jennie, Judy, Katie, Lori, Lorna, Louise, Margaret, Marie Hunter, Mary Ann, Mary Joy, Monica, Pip, Rev. 6 Driving Miss Daisy to the St Bartholomew's Bazaar As you know the Bazaar this year will open at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 3, for our handicapped parishioners. Most live close to the Church or in retirement residences - The Rockcliffe, The Edinburgh & Edinburgh Square. We are looking for drivers! It would be wonderful if volunteers could collect people at about 12:10 p.m. & bring them to the vestry entrance to avoid the crowds. We will also need help at about 2:30 pm to drive them homeward. Please call Liz Heatherington at or Mary Capson if you are able to help! Attic Treasures William Morris famously said: "Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful". Bearing that in mind, please consider what you might be able to donate for the Attic Treasures table at the Christmas Bazaar on Nov. 3rd. We are grateful for anything that is portable & in reasonable condition. Please bring your "treasures" to St. Bart's the week of October 29. Katharine Robinson: or Jennifer Barbarie: Attic Treasures Co-convenors Gift Table at the Bazaar Do you have a special item in its original packaging or in excellent condition for the Gift Table? Ideal gifts are china tea cups, candles & candlesticks, vases, special glass (especially if boxed), silver, new linens, & toiletries as well as works of art, if they are not too large. Donations may be left in the hall during the week of October 29 - November 2 in bags or boxes marked Gift Table. Many thanks in advance for finding a unique item for our table! Carol Matson, Convener Calling all St. Barts Bakers! The famous St. Barts Bazaar is fast approaching & 'tis the season for baking! We're looking for savoury items, such as quiches & breads, sweet treats, cakes, cookies, brownies, fruit loaves, pies, squares, short-breads & candies as well as gluten free items! Please clear wrap your items in small quantities & deliver to the hall on Friday, Nov. 2, or call Claire to arrange a drop-off time. Warmest thanks in advance for your generosity! Shaw's You Never Can Tell, a comedy about romance, sexual politics & dentistry, will be held at Elmwood School at 7:30 p.m. Tickets: $25 from Janet Uren at coffee hour or call A Reading from the Book of Joel Do not fear, O soil; be glad and rejoice, for the Lord has done great things! Do not fear, you animals of the field, for the pastures of the wilderness are green; the tree bears its fruit, the fig tree and vine give their full yield. O children of Zion, be glad and rejoice in the Lord your God; for he has given the early rain for your vindication, he has poured down for you abundant rain, the early and the later rain, as before. The threshing-floors shall be full of grain, the vats shall overflow with wine and oil. I will repay you for the years that the swarming locust has eaten, the hopper, the destroyer, and the cutter, my great army, which I sent against you. You shall eat in plenty and be satisfied, and praise the name of the Lord your God, who has dealt wondrously with you. And my people shall never again be put to shame. You shall know that I am in the midst of Israel, and that I, the Lord, am your God and there is no other. And my people shall never again be put to shame. (Joel 2:21-27 ) Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church. Thanks be to God. 6 7
