3 10 The Calendar The Consecration of Samuel Seabury (1784) On November 14 th, 1784, in Aberdeen, three Scottish bishops consecrated Samuel Seabury of Connecticut to be the first bishop of the American Episcopal Church. Seabury, born in Groton, CT, studied theology at Yale and medicine in Edinburgh, and was ordained in 1753 by the Bishop of Lincoln. He served as a missionary in America and as chaplain to British forces during the War of Independence. At the time, all clergy in the colonies were under the oversight of the Bishop of London. This was no longer appropriate after 1776, so a secret gathering of clergymen in Connecticut asked Seabury to travel to England to be consecrated bishop and to return to them. He left in 1783, but found it impossible in England to overcome the need to take an Oath of Allegiance to the King as part of the consecration. He turned to Scotland, where the Episcopal Church dissented from the established Presbyterian Church of Scotland, and the bishops took no Oath of Allegiance, being Non-Jurors (descendents of those who would not swear allegiance to William of Orange, James II being still alive but having fled the kingdom). Episcopalians had their own prayer book, not the 1662 BCP. The bishops who readily consecrated Seabury urged him to convince the American church to adopt a form of the Holy Communion service that was closer to the Scottish rite. The Scots called the minister a Presbyter, not a Priest, and in their service the intercessions and confession came after the prayer of consecration. The Scots also heard the comfortable words and said the prayer of humble access (We do not presume to come to this thy Table.) immediately before they came to receive communion, whereas both were said earlier in England. The Scottish bishops knew their rite was closer to the ancient liturgies of the church, and was basically that of the very first BCP (1549). Back in America, Seabury, recognized as Bishop of Connecticut from 1785, convinced the church to follow the Scottish way, establishing the principle that churches within the Anglican communion are not copies of the Church of England, but choose their own path within the Anglican tradition. 5 A Reading from the Letter to the Hebrews For Christ did not enter a sanctuary made by human hands, a mere copy of the true one, but he entered into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God on our behalf. Nor was it to offer himself again and again, as the high priest enters the Holy Place year after year with blood that is not his own; for then he would have had to suffer again and again since the foundation of the world. But as it is, he has appeared once for all at the end of the age to remove sin by the sacrifice of himself. And just as it is appointed for mortals to die once, and after that the judgement, so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin, but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him. SOCE Update At the recent meeting of Parish Council, we passed a motion to defer consideration of any new proposals for SOCE payment until we evaluate our financial situation after the conclusion of the GIFT Campaign. We will pay out the remainder of our 2012 commitments for projects approved at Vestry, 2012, approximately $28,000.
