St John 17: Alan Griffiths, born to an Edwardian family in southern England, experienced a close awareness of God s presence manifest in nature when still a boy. I hardly dared look on the face of the sky, because it seemed as though it was but a veil before the face of God he wrote later. He sought to reenter this presence for the rest of his life. He studied under C.S. Lewis at Oxford. They became life-long friends; Lewis dedicated his autobiography Surprized by Joy to him. At Oxford Alan s deep distrust of industrialism emerged along with suspicion of the primacy of reason over imagination in western culture. He did not trust that reason was a sure route to knowledge of God, which he sensed was to be sought through experience, not analytics. An arduous mental struggle brought him to find his vocation in the church, as a Benedictine monk, first at Prinknash Priory in Gloucestershire. He took the name Bede when he became a novice. The search for his vocation had involved extensive reading of western religious and philosophical literature, which was combined at Prinknash, with the rhythmic continuity of the daily offices. He developed a keen appreciation of the universal presence of God, and alongside this arose a remarkably non-judgmental view of people and their experiences. In 1955 he went to India in order to establish a Benedictine contemplative presence in a land with a long history of Hindu aestheticism. He did not go to convert people but to find Christ, who he knew was already there. He was ahead of his time. He helped to found one ashram in Kerala, which, in the Benedictine tradition supported itself agriculturally, and where the monks began to discover how Hindu spiritual disciplines might be incorporated in the offices of an Indian spirituality, particularly meditation. From 1968 he was in Tamil Nadu at the Saccidananda (Godhead, in Sanskrit) Ashram in Shantivanam. There his prime reputation was as a holy man. Time and again, people spoke of his presence as emanating undiluted love. His quest was to contribute recognition of the unity of all religions in their search for God, and to lift the veil between God s presence and ourselves. He was asked to talk all over the world on the encounter between Christianity and eastern mysticism, not as a philosopher, but from experience. He became conscious of Love as the root of the universe. As his body was being laid to rest a storm suddenly blew up and the wind swirled around the mourners, blowing leaves and flowers into the grave. When a great soul dies, the winds go wild. I know that Great Person of the brightness of the Sun beyond the darkness. Only by knowing him One goes beyond death. There is no other way to go. Svetasvatara Upanishad Submitted by Chris Burn. 11

And as they migrated from the east, they came upon a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there. And they said to one another, "Come, let us make bricks, and burn them thoroughly." And they had brick for stone, and bitumen for mortar. Then they said, "Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves; otherwise we shall be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth." The Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which mortals had built.
