Sidesperson and Reader: Sheila Perry Lay Administrator: Jim Bradford Sanctuary Flowers The flowers are given to the glory of God & in loving memory of Palle Kiar & Ross Thurlow Moffett, born October 21st, 1920, & passed away suddenly on April 5th, 1987, from his daughters Gaye Moffett & Roslyn Butler & his son-in-law Don Butler The Calendar The Reformation is Coming We are approaching the great anniversary of the Reformation, 500 years since Martin Luther nailed his theses to the door of Wittenberg church. The Anglican reformation, initially political, could not but be affected by the theological and administrative challenges stirring northern Europe and seeping into England. Perhaps the most fundamental was the provision of the scriptures in the common languages of the day, so that everyone might hear the word of God. The reformers insisted upon this. They opened up interpretation to everyone. Reformed churches no longer had imperial control over the meaning of biblical texts. Instead they brought us the joy of understanding, a key precursor to the development of science and the Enlightenment the ability to enquire into phenomena apparently outside the frameworks of scripture or the church. They also brought us literalism and, of course, their own conformities, some drab and unadventurous, others consumed by attention to the present and hostile to wisdom accumulated over time. Religious orders and their tradition of a spiritual life suffered. A curious flattening of spiritual life followed in time, so that by the late-18 th century the insight and excitement of John and Charles Wesley provoked its own reformation, or revival, and a firm foundation for the evangelical tradition, focused on knowledge, understanding, and certainty. Fifty years later, the Oxford Movement responded celebrating ancient traditions, and inwardly focusing on holiness and the mystery of God. We do not need to understand everything. If we did there would be no faith. The 14 th century author of The Cloud of Unknowing apprehended this, as did the little boy Samuel in the temple (1 Sam. 3:10). But church mice can nibble away at the Mystery. Revisions to hymns are a common place for this: we no longer wonder about a higher gift than grace (Hymn 372, Praise to the Holiest in the Height), apparently John Henry Newman s poetry is somehow insufficient. So I am thankful for living now, when I can value the insight of the reformers and learn from the gifts brought through many traditions. We can be Catholic Evangelicals, appreciating God s word in the scriptures and His deeds through the Church. Submitted by Chris Burn 11

Ms. Elizabeth Lockhart, a lawyer whose specialty is Estate Planning, Wills, Powers of Attorney and Charitable Giving, will present some key information. You will then be able to ensure your intentions to provide for charities and St Bart s, your spiritual home, are addressed. She will also answer your questions. Do plan to come.
