All: We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. All: It is right to give our thanks and praise. Celebrant: We thank you, Holy God, that you sent Jesus to be born into this world and live among us. People had turned away from you and no longer loved each other the way you loved us. Jesus opened our eyes and our hearts to your love and now brings us together to this table to remember his love for us and for all people. Celebrant: Therefore with all the angels of heaven, we lift our voices and sing our joyful hymn of praise to proclaim the glory of your name. All: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord
4 Celebrant: The night before he died when Jesus was at supper with his friends, he took bread and gave you thanks, broke the bread, and gave it to his friends, saying: Take, eat: This is my Body which is given for you. Do this to remember me. When supper was ended, Jesus took a cup of wine, thanked you, and gave it to his friends saying: Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is poured out for you and for all for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this to remember me. Life-giving God, we ask you now to bless these our gifts of bread and wine and make them holy. Fill us with the joy of the Holy Spirit as we receive this bread and wine and then send us out in peace to share your love with the world. Through Christ and with Christ and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, to you be honour, glory, and praise, for ever and ever. Amen. This simplified Eucharistic prayer designed for use when young children are present has been approved by the Right Reverend John H. Chapman, Bishop of Ottawa, for use in the Diocese of Ottawa. The same was in the begynnynge wyth God. All thyngs were made by it / and with out it was made noo thinge / that made was. St John 1:1-3, William Tyndale s translation, printed in 1526 Words very similar to William Tyndale s translation are often introduced St John unfolds the great mystery of the Incarnation. Tyndale translated the scriptures so that even a boy that driveth the plough would know the word of God. The Word in the word. And in the stable, the Creator in His creation. The brilliant bishop Lancelot Andrewes, a principal translator of the Bible for King James, preaching at court on Christmas Day 1611, with his text from verse 14, approached Bethlehem an infant. the infant Word, the Word an infant? The Word and not able to speak a word? What was it made the Word thus to be made flesh? It was God and in God nothing but love... Love only did it. All of Andrewes s theology there in a baby. We can approach the stable with words, but more easily with music, our carols carrying us to the manger. In 1647, Robert Herrick wrote: What sweeter music can we bring Than a carol, for to sing The birth of this our heav nly King? Awake the voice! Awake the string: Dark and dull night, fly hence away, And give the honour to this day, That sees December turn to May, If we may ask the reason say: The darling of the world is come, And fit it is we find a room To welcome him. The nobler part Of all the house here is the heart: Which we will give him, and bequeath This holly and this ivy wreath, To do him honour who s our King, And Lord of all this reveling: We see him come, and know him ours, Who with his sunshine and his showers Turns all the patient ground to flowers. I wonder what people heard when Jesus sang. Submitted by Chris Burn 9 9
5 The Gospel 8 The Holy Gospel is written in the first chapter of the Gospel according to Saint Matthew beginning at the 18th verse. (BCP) Glory be to thee, O Lord. (BCP) The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. (BAS) Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. (BAS) Now the birth of Jesus the Messiah took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been engaged to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. Her husband Joseph, being a righteous man and unwilling to expose her to public disgrace, planned to dismiss her quietly. But just when he had resolved to do this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins." All this took place to fulfil what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet: "Look, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel," which means, "God is with us." When Joseph awoke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him; he took her as his wife, but had no marital relations with her until she had borne a son; and he named him Jesus. (Matthew 1:18-25) The Gospel of Christ. Praise be to thee, O Christ. (BCP) Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. 6 A Reading from the Book of Isaiah Again the Lord spoke to Ahaz, saying, Ask a sign of the Lord your God; let it be deep as Sheol or high as heaven. But Ahaz said, I will not ask, and I will not put the Lord to the test. Then Isaiah said: "Hear then, O house of David! Is it too little for you to weary mortals, that you weary my God also? Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Look, the young woman is with child and shall bear a son, and shall name him Immanuel. He shall eat curds and honey by the time he knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good. For before the child knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good, the land before whose two kings you are in dread will be deserted." (Isaiah 7:10-16) Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church. Thanks be to God. A Reading from the Letter of Paul to the Romans Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy scriptures, the gospel concerning his Son, who was descended from David according to the flesh and was declared to be Son of God with power according to the spirit of holiness by resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord, through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith among all the Gentiles for the sake of his name, including yourselves who are called to belong to Jesus Christ, To all God's beloved in Rome, who are called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. (Romans 1:1-7 ) Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church. Thanks be to God. 6 7
