2 May 6, 2018 St. Kevin R.C. Church Page 2 Q. I have noticed that the pews which are supposedly reserved for the handicap are in fact being used by those other than persons with disabilities. Have we moved away from reserving the pews for the handicap or disabled? A. We have not moved away from reserving the first pew on each side for our parishioners who are handicap or disabled. There are many possible reasons as to why some people sitting in this reserved area, who appear to have no handicap or disability, are seated in this area. Some of the people that you may see that appear to have no disability may in fact be assisting another who does have a disability. In addition, a person/s may not physically appear to be disabled or handicap but may have some type of medical condition that prevents them from sitting further away from the sanctuary for example, hearing impairment or sight impairment. However, I do ask that if you are not assisting someone who has a disability, or you yourself have no handicap or disability, to please be mindful not to sit in the pews reserved for our parishioners who are handicapped or disabled. Thank you for your cooperation with this situation. First Holy Communion Today, Sunday, May 6th, students from St. Kevin Catholic Academy and St. Kevin School of Faith Formation will receive the Sacrament of First Holy Communion. Our prayers are with the children on this very special day! We also congratulate the parents of our first communicants who have journeyed with their children to this beautiful day. We invite and encourage you and your children to continue on your faith journey as we strive to live holy lives. Lastly, we thank our catechists who have assisted in your children s faith formation. It is through the generosity of their heart to testify to the Truth and to give living testimony of how God has and continues to work in their lives. 5 Page 5 May 6, 2018 Mass and Candlelight Procession The 11th Annual Mass and Candlelight Procession honoring Our Lady of Fatima & Saint Padre Pio will take place on Monday, May 21st, 2018 at Saint Josaphat Church (210th St & 35th Avenue, Bayside). The celebrant will be Bishop Frank J. Caggiano. Mass will begin at 7:00 PM followed at 8:15 PM with a Candlelight Procession through the streets with recitation of the Rosary. The relic of St. Padre Pio s Glove will be available for veneration. Mustard Seed Nicaragua Mission of St. Kevin The dates for this year's Mission are July 7 to 14. Stewardship and the Annual Spring Cleaning When spring rain lets up, and May brings long hours of brilliant sunshine, something stirs within: the desire to tackle that dust we suddenly notice in places we seldom look. And those windows smeared with winter s muck? And that disorganized closet? There s a reason our grandmothers called it spring housecleaning. The season brings an almost physical desire to get out the mop. Surprisingly, for the Christian steward, this can actually be a spiritual impulse. There s something intrinsically renewing and revitalizing about cleaning. Everything done with a prayerful heart can lead us closer to God, and cleaning, often a solitary and contemplative task, can definitely include prayer. You might plan to begin your cleaning with prayer, and play music that lifts your spirit as you work. Start with a closet. Open your heart to what it tells you about how blessed you are materially. But observe the consumerism a closet can reveal. As you examine each item of apparel, remember and thank God for the graces of the occasion: a wedding, a graduation, a vacation. Enjoy shopping in your own closet for items you ve forgotten about. Pare down what you no longer need or what you feel called to share. Wash, mend, iron and select a place where your items may find a good home. Many cities have refugee closets, and many nonprofits have thrift stores which support them. St. Vincent de Paul shops serve the poor with inexpensive used items. Pray for those with whom you are about to share. We filled the truck with clothing here at St. Kevin Church last week. Thank you for sharing your clothing. It is very much appreciated. Resolve to put your newly reorganized items to work for you and not rush out to buy more. And those windows? Does anything lift the spirit like a clean window after a long winter? As you polish those panes of glass, pray about where your own inner life could use a cleaning. Perhaps you don t make it to the Sacrament of Reconciliation as often as you d like. Use your quiet window cleaning time to examine the graces and challenges of your life. Thank God for the many blessings and be honest about failings. And that ubiquitous dust? It promises to return. It s a sign of our universal connection to the earth and the environment, a reminder of our own mortality. Even the dust we clean can be lifted up to God with a thank you from a steward s grateful heart. Everything done with a prayerful heart can lead us closer to God, and cleaning, often a solitary and contemplative task, can definitely include prayer.

We are called to be stewards of this friendship; to love one another as Jesus loves us. Do we give serious attention to what this love requires of us?
