Swimming Upstream: Going Against the Current Culture In this empowering talk, Steve Ray shares what it means to be a Christian in today's world. By examining the lives and martyrdoms of the early Christians and understanding how they transformed the pagan GrecoRoman culture, Steve gives us a blueprint for the New Evangelization. Learn from early Christians how to swim upstream against the current culture and become a witness for Christ. We ask a donation of $3.00 per CD. Try one. Page 2 COAT DRIVE: The 5th and 6th gr ade Religious Education classes are sponsoring a coat drive for the month of November. We ll be collecting winter coats as well as hats, gloves, scarves and other winter gear. There is a box downstairs in the parish hall. At the end of the month, all of the garments will be dry-cleaned and donated to COTS, the Committee on Temporary Shelter. 4 OLHR/IHM Adult Christmas Party Our annual, adult Christmas Party is being hosted by OLHR on Friday, December 1 at 7:00 PM at the Our Lady of the Holy Rosary parish hall in Richmond. This is a pot luck. If your last name begins with A-O, please bring a main dish. P-Z, please bring a dessert. Also, if you wish to participate in the Yankee Swap gift exchange, please bring a gift with a value of $10 or less, placed in brown paper bag, unwrapped. Feel free to invite friends and neighbors in the community to enjoy great food, socializing and joyful laughter. Reservation forms are available at the church entrances. Please RSVP by November 29 for you and any invited friends. SAVE THE DATE-YOUTH CHRISTMAS PARTY On Sunday, December 17th from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM IHM will be hosting a Youth Christmas Party for all those in grades 7 through 10. This is a night of FUN not work. We will be having pizza and cookies. There will be a White Elephant Yankee Swap. Wrap and bring something that you don t want any more that is in good condition to swap. Advent Appeal Please join Vermont Catholic Charities in supporting the Annual Advent Appeal. The Season of Giving has no bounds for people in need. Whatever the season, it is a daily struggle for many Vermonters to maintain housing, stay warm or feed their families with your help, we can make a difference in lives of those living on the edge. Help people like Scott and Rachel and their 3 school aged children. They were struggling to make ends meet because Scott s hours were reduced. Vermont Catholic Charities provided them with back rent assistance so they could remain in their home and the kids could stay in their school district. Whether your gift is $10, $100, $1000 or more, your gift will make a difference in the life of a needy family. Matthew Rensch. The workshop will be conducted in the IHM parish hall, Saturday morning, December 9th from 7:45 to 10:15 AM. This is a FREE program and will include a complimentary continental breakfast sponsored by the Knights of Columbus. This is a lovely evening for women of the parishes to spend time in fellowship and prayer. There is a moving Advent candlelight service with Bible readings and music and delicious desserts at each table. So we are sure everyone has a spot please let us know if you want to attend. Each week, the first page of the website features a program called "Opening the Word", which provides a short study guide for the readings of the following Sunday. There is a short video that explains the overarching theme of the readings as well as questions and daily reflections. Take some time and look at it this week! First quarter parish financial statements are available at the entrances to the church. CHRIST, KING OF ALL On this, the final Sunday of the liturgical year, we celebrate the solemnity of Christ the King. By concluding the year with this feast we are proclaiming our faith that Jesus Christ is the one and only king over all seasons, all peoples, and all of creation. At the end of time as we know it, Christ's work of restoring all things to unity and harmony with their Creator God will be completed. This Sunday, when we claim Christ as both our Shepherd and our King, we recognize our own calling to participate in Christ's saving work by caring for those whom Jesus calls "the least ones" (Matthew 25:45). TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Today we have a modern feast, less than a century old, and placed at the very end of the liturgical cycle of Sundays only in In 1925, the world was in a sorry state from the vantage point of Pope Pius XI. The winds of war had swept the map of Europe raw, and ancient Christian dynasties had fallen in Russia and Spain. Although the Great War had ended, wars were breaking out everywhere. Fascism was already in control in Italy, and Nazism was on the horizon for Germany. The disorder making its claim on the human race was, the pope felt, an insult to the Divine Order. Pius XI designated the last Sunday in October as a day of universal recognition of the kingship of Christ. Creating this feast was an act of bravery by the pope, who was standing up against idolatry of the state and the dehumanizing forces of the modern world, things that are not hard to detect in today's world as well. In 1969 it seemed fitting to move the feast to a place of honor at the end of the year, a way of summing up the whole movement of the liturgical year toward the perfection of the Kingdom of God. In recent decades, many Protestant churches have adopted this day from the new Roman calendar, so it is shared now with the Church of England, the Episcopal, Presbyterian, and Lutheran churches, and others. --Rev.
