2 St Charles Borromeo Catholic Church Bulletin Published Weekly Page 2 Today s readings: February 17, 2019 First Reading: Jeremiah 17:5-8 Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 15:12, Gospel: Luke 6:17, A Note from Fr. Mark: Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 17, 2019 Next week s readings: February 24, 2019 First Reading: 1 Samuel 26:2, 7-9, 12-13, Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 15:45-49 Gospel: Luke 6:27-38 This week, from February 21 24, Pope Francis will be mee ng with the heads of Bishop s Conferences from around the world to discuss the clergy abuse crisis. There are 141 Bishop s Conferences in the world, as well as 21 Eastern- Rite conferences. This mee ng was called by the Holy Father when the revela ons of mismanagement and cover-up of abuse cases by Bishops received interna onal a en on last fall. As you are aware, the Catholic Church has been rocked by the clergy abuse crisis since the early 2000 s. In June of 2002 the Bishops of the United States met in Dallas and created The Charter for the Protec on of Children. Our Diocese complies with all the requirements of the Charter which, na onally, seems to have been very effec ve in preven ng further abuse of children and vulnerable adults. However, even when the Charter first came out, there were a lot of ques ons why it was not made mandatory for all Dioceses in the country and, especially, why the Bishops were exempt from what the Charter required all other clergy, staff and volunteers in the church to do. This latest incarna on of the clergy abuse crises is focused in par cular upon the bishops now; who holds them accountable? Who has done what in the past? What ac ons will be taken, and how will church culture change, to prevent abuses going forward? In an effort to re-establish some level of trust, dioceses around the country are releasing lists of priests and deacons credibly accused of abuse. This is to demonstrate transparency; names are not being hidden and those accused are not being shuffled from parish to parish. Very soon the Diocese of Oakland will release its list of those credibly accused. This list was to be released in the fall but was delayed so that an effort could be made to contact survivors of abuse. If a survivor was watching the news and suddenly saw a picture or heard the name of their abuser, many old wounds could be opened and new hurt created. By knowing ahead of me that names are being released, it is hoped new injury will be lessened. The list was also delayed as the Diocese had to contact religious orders whose priests had served here but are no longer in the Diocese. For the sake of accuracy the Diocese needed to know the current status of religious order priests credibly accused. Without a doubt, there are those who will feel the list is incomplete. Please remember the list will not be of everyone accused, but only those credibly accused. Obviously the ques on is what cons tutes being credibly accused. The Diocese of Oakland has used several criteria in deciding whether a priest or deacon has been credibly accused. If the priest / deacon has been criminally convicted, or admi ed the conduct, they are credibly accused. Also, if a police inves ga on has confirmed the probability of sexual misconduct, they are considered credibly accused. A li le more debatable, but s ll considered a criteria for being credibly accused, is if there was a lawsuit or lawsuits with se lements reflec ng probable sexual misconduct. (Con nued on Page 4)

Church Humor: The Fisherman and the Lord During the recent wintry days in Chicago, Joseph wanted to go ice fishing. He d seen many books on the subject, and finally ge ng all the necessary tools together, he made for the ice. A er posi oning his comfy stool, he started to make a circular cut in the ice. Suddenly, from the sky, a voice boomed: THERE ARE NO FISH UNDER THE ICE. Startled, then Joseph moved further down the ice, poured a thermos of coffee, and began to cut yet another hole. Again from the heavens the voice bellowed: THERE ARE NO FISH UNDER THE ICE. Now worried, Joseph moved away, clear down to the opposite end of the ice. He set up his stool once more and tried again to cut his hole. The voice came once more: THERE ARE NO FISH UNDER THE ICE. He stopped, looked skyward, and said, IS THAT YOU LORD? The voice replied: NO, THIS IS THE MANAGER OF THE HOCKEY RINK! Rest In Peace Fr. Brian T. Joyce Priest in Diocese of Oakland We honor those who have Annual Requests first.
