This is the latest step in the ongoing commitment of the Diocese of Oakland to stop the scourge of sexual abuse of minors and vulnerable adults. This public accountability will allow you and others in our community to see we are keeping our promises. We have nothing to hide. It is the right thing to do. Since 2002, the No More Secrets Group, a mutual support group for adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse, has been mee ng with the full support and encouragement of the Diocese of Oakland. Indeed, our support for survivors of clergy sexual abuse predates the na onal Charter for the Protec on of Children and Young People of In 1987 the Oakland Diocesan Senate of Priests issued our first set of guidelines on how to respond to allega ons of abuse. My predecessors, Bishop John S. Cummins and Bishop Allen H. Vigneron both conducted services of healing for survivors. Over the years we have been con nually revising and improving our accountability process, reinforcing our commitment to protect children, u lizing background checks and mandatory safe environment training for all church employees and volunteers. We are regularly audited by an outside firm to ensure all our Catholic Parishes and Schools are in compliance. I an cipate the list of those credibly accused will be ready for publica on in approximately 45 days. With the large number of interna onal and religious order clergy who have served in our diocese in the past, it will take some me to verify certain informa on. I have instructed my staff to priori ze this work while also recognizing the importance of making the list as accurate as possible. Anyone wishing to report any allega on of sexual misconduct by any clergy or diocesan employee should contact the local civil authority, i.e. police or sheriff s department. Stephen A. Wilcox, our Chancellor, who serves as the Vic ms Assistance Coordinator in our diocese can also assist in processing allega ons of sexual misconduct and is a mandatory reporter. He can be reached at swilcox@oakdiocese.org or Survivors of clergy sexual abuse may also want to avail themselves of the Survivor Advocacy Network, at or survivors@oakdiocese.org. We have contracted with a medical professional who is trained in sexual trauma healing as an addi onal resource for survivors and their families. A former FBI official who is well-known as an advocate for jus ce in clergy sexual abuse, Dr. Kathleen McChesney, will assist in our review of clergy files and the audit of our processes. A er the comple on of our process review and the publica on of our credibly accused list, Dr. McChesney and her team will do a full review of our files to ensure our list is as accurate as possible. This second review will be completed a er the first of the year. I realize other vic ms may step forward with new informa on. Any accusa on will be fully inves gated by our independent Diocesan Review Board. We intend to update our list as we receive new informa on. I hope and pray the publica on of these names will help the innocent survivors and their families in their journey to wholeness and healing. Mass of Remembrance Monday, October 15th at 7:00PM St. Michael s Church 458 Maple St. The Grief Support Ministry of St. Charles and St. Michael parishes provides an opportunity to celebrate the lives of departed loved ones and pray for their eternal happiness. At this bilingual Mass, you are invited to bring photographs of those you are remembering and place them on a table in front of the altar during the Mass. A er the homily, you may place a rose (provided) in a communal bouquet and light a candle for your special people. NOMINATE A WORTHY CAUSE OR CHARITY FOR FUNDING The Social Concerns Commi ee is calling for requests from parishioners for funding of worthy causes. The commi ee allocates 4.5% of parish plate dona ons to organiza ons that provide charity and social jus ce work locally, within the twocounty Oakland Diocese and interna onally. In November 2017, the commi ee approved one- me grants totaling $25,500 to fourteen agencies including Get on the Bus, Habitat for Humanity and Doctors without Borders. Also approved were $16,800 in grants payable quarterly in 2018 to a variety of agencies, such as Kids Bike Lane (supplies bicycles for the Giving Tree), Next Step Learning Center (a highly successful literacy program in Oakland) Open Heart Kitchen and two food pantries in Livermore.
