2 St Charles Borromeo Catholic Church Bulletin Published Weekly Page 2 Today s readings: December 3, 2017 First Reading: Isaiah 63: 16b-17, 19; 64:2-7 Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 1: 3-9 Gospel: Mark 13: First Sunday of Advent December 3, 2017 Next week s readings: December 10, 2017 First Reading: Isaiah 40: 1-5, 9-11 Second Reading: 2 Peter 3: 8-14 Gospel: Mark 1: 1-8 A Note from Karen Miller: We begin a new liturgical year with the season of incarna on- Advent through the Octave of Christmas (feasts of Mary, John the Bap st, and Epiphany). Our liturgical seasons are not simply calendar dates. They describe a spiritual calendar, kyros or sacred movements in the spirituality of one whose life is surrendered to Christ. During the Advent/Christmas season of Incarna on, we consider that God is enfleshed, made visible all around us. The kyros of this season calls us to give flesh to the peace of Christ by the way we live. It is not about doing more, but doing purposefully. We recall his coming in history, look forward to his coming again, and look to his coming within us. This third coming is the call of the church, to be pregnant with Christ, to birth him into this world so that the kingdom of peace may live. This is a tall order, and we must return each year asking, how will we celebrate Advent/Christmas, hailing the coming of the kingdom of peace, in a way that gets us a bit closer? Advent is characterize by several reali es. A me of pregnant wai ng- We usually see wai ng as a waste of me. Advent wai ng is pregnant with unexpected change- the virgin gives birth. A me of darkness- During winter s long nights and short days brain chemistry changes, making us want to sleep more. We must rest as we prepare for something new-a people who walked in darkness have seen a great light. A me of small points of light- In the darkness, we look for small points of light that lead us, like candles or lights on our tree. A me to receive messengers- People who remind us of John the Bap st, Gabriel and Mary will be sent. We need to hear their message. Advent spiritual prac ces guide us. Don t fight the need to rest, to be s ll. Preserve margins in your schedule when you are pushed to the limit. Celebrate the Sacrament of reconcilia on (December 11 th at St. Charles). Choose a me and a place for daily prayer. Recommit to self-care- nutri on and exercise. Be with people who give you energy. Be aware of things you do that have never worked. Stop and watch for God s direc on like the star that guided the Magi. Advent/Christmas call us to s llness, and so gives us vision to see God s ac ons. The signs are there like John in the Desert, and Gabriel with Mary. Unconscious life does not serve spirituality. Advent/Christmas asks us to be conscious of life, not as random events signifying nothing, but holy, filled with message and meaning. If we pay a en- on, if we choose it, we will see the kingdom of God. The lion lies with the lamb. Children of enemies play together. Sparks of peace, wisdom, and love are there like points of light in the darkness. We need Advent/Christmas, season of s llness. Through the prac ces of Advent/Christmas, we come to see that we are the sign of the coming of Christ, and his the kingdom of peace.

You specify the number of sheets (one sheet of 10 ckets costs $16, which is a 20% discount; There is a small processing fee, also.) Linda Galles, St Charles Open Heart Ministry leader, will also accept your checks and get them over to AUMC. You can contact her at hnlgalles@gmail.com with ques ons. Jacky Poulsen can be reached at jackypoulsen9325@gmail.com. Just to give you a sense of how important these bus ckets are, here is a quote from Donna McKenzie, who runs Livermore Homeless refuge. As I watched our homeless friends leave the shelter this morning...with bus pass clutched in their hand, I thought of YOU! It was raining and they must carry all their belongings with them. Had it not been for you and your very generous gi of bus passes, these folks would have been soaked. Once wet, they are wet all day.
