Mark: St. Charles parishioner, Donna McKenzie, sent us this story about the true meaning of this season., and it is especially appropriate on the Feast of the Epiphany, when the Magi offered their own gifts to the Christ Child. Emma s Gift The story I m going to tell you is truly about a gift of love. The Wednesday night before Thanksgiving, I was in the garage sorting through clothes to bring to our homeless friends. A car stopped in the middle of our driveway. I looked up to see a man, woman, and child walking up the driveway towards me. The man said, Are you Donna? He and his wife looked down at the young girl, Emma. She handed me her little pink piggy bank saying, This is for the homeless. I was speechless and stunned! Emma and I sat down on the driveway, opened her piggy bank and counted out $6.12. I suggested she keep half of it in her bank and that I would take the other half for the homeless. She answered, I want them to have it all, because tomorrow is Thanksgiving and I m going to have turkey. I have a warm bed with covers and they don t have any. Her dad said this gift was completely Emma s idea. They had been downtown recently and she saw some of our homeless begging. She asked what they were doing and her parents explained it to her. When she returned home, she told her parents what she wanted to do with the money she had been saving. I offered to give her $1.00 to start her savings again. But she would not accept it. Once again, I was humbled by a little girl who understood at her young age about giving and sharing and mostly about caring. Emma is 6 1/2 years old. I hugged them all, telling the parents they were doing an awesome job raising their daughter. Then they were gone. I didn t get their names, except for Emma, who I will never forget. I have the $6.12 in pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters. I m thinking ice cream for our homeless. They love it...and it s a real treat for them...thanks to Emma. Church Humor Pearly Gates The pilot and the priest A priest dies and is waiting in line at the Pearly Gates. Ahead of him is a guy who's dressed in sunglasses, a loud shirt, leather jacket, and jeans. Saint Peter addresses this cool guy, 'Who are you, so that I may know whether or not to admit you to the Kingdom of Heaven?' The guy replies, 'I'm Jack, retired airline pilot from Houston.' Saint Peter consults his list. He smiles and says to the pilot, 'Take this silken robe and golden staff and enter the Kingdom.' The pilot goes into Heaven with his robe and staff. Next, it's the priest's turn. He stands erect and booms out, 'I am Father Mike, pastor of Saint Mary's for the last 43 years.' Saint Peter consults his list. He says to the priest, 'Take this cotton robe and wooden staff and enter the Kingdom. Just a minute,' says the good father. 'That man was a pilot and he gets a silken robe and golden staff and I get only cotton and wood. How can this be? 'Up here - we go by results,' says Saint Peter. 'When you preached - people slept. When he flew, people prayed.' 4 The Epiphany of the Lord January 6, 2013 Page 4 OPEN HEART KITCHEN In 1995, a group of clergy people associated with Interfaith Sharing a still-operating food bank In Livermore decided more could be done to assist the needy in the community. Their discussions led to the founding of Open Heart Kitchen, initially located at Holy Cross Lutheran Church. In its first years, the kitchen served about people lunch and dinner every Wednesday. Today, Open Heart serves hot, nutritious meals every weekday at five locations in Pleasanton, Livermore and Dublin. There is no qualifying process no questions asked. Meals can be eaten at the serving sites or taken to go. Open Heart s outreach is not limited to its serving sites. Dinners are also supplied to the Livermore Homeless Refuge when it is open. Bag lunches are served on Fridays to needy students in Dublin, Livermore and Pleasanton schools so they will have a nutritious meal over the weekend. Bag lunches (135 per month) are distributed to the homeless in Livermore. In total, more than 260,000 meals have been served so far this year. Saint Charles has been active in volunteering at Open Heart Kitchen since At present, we have 55 volunteers, men and women, who assist in feeding the hungry. Some have been volunteering from the very beginning. As parishioners, we can be extremely proud of the generous support we have given Open Heart Kitchen. St Charles volunteers comprise six teams, working every other month. The morning lunch team works from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The afternoon dinner team works from 2:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Volunteer days are the first Tuesday of the month. Dinner is also served by St. Charles on the fourth Wednesday of each month. If you are interested in volunteering for this very worthwhile effort, please contact Doris Lennon at dlgrandma@comcast.net or January 2nd Collection The second collection for January is to support the Seminary of the Diocese of Oakland, and will be taken up at all weekend masses January 19/20 and through your white tithing envelopes all month long. The Diocese of Oakland is blessed to have 29 seminarians preparing for priesthood. The formation program for a seminarian can be up to nine years long, depending on the seminarian s prior education. The cost to the diocese of educating our future priest is substantial and your generosity is needed and appreciated. Pamphlets and extra envelopes are available on the table in the vestibule of the church. Pre-Baptism Class for Parents and Godparents Sunday, January 20, 2013 at 11:00AM We have set the date for our next Pre-Baptism class be sure to mark your calendars if you have a child to be baptized, or if you have been asked to be a godparent and are in need of a class. Call the rectory office to register NOW for this class. We request all parents and godparents (if they are in local area) to attend. Otherwise, they must attend a class in their home parish. Families need to be registered for 90 days and attending Mass as often as possible here at St. Charles before scheduling a baptism date. Call or Janie x 101 by January 17 to register for this class. 5 The Epiphany of the Lord January 6, 2013 Page 5 St. Anthony Foundation of San Francisco Scarf Challenge 2012 Thank You, Scarf-Makers! Thanks to the wonderful response from so many St. Charles parishioners, Women of St. Michael -St. Charles WINGS and their friends, we recently delivered 141 scarves and 34 hats to St. Anthony Foundation San Francisco, all warm, beautiful and lovingly hand-made. With 15 more mailed to St. Anthony s from southern California by a St. Charles parishioner, we contributed a total of 190 hats and scarves toward the project s goal of 4000 scarves and 3000 hats. The scarves were given as gifts to St. Anthony dining room guests on Christmas day and will be offered throughout the winter season to individuals and families using St. Anthony s health and social services clinics. This is the third year St. Anthony has sponsored this project and also the third year that we have participated. Please pray that the recipient of each scarf and hat may always feel the warmth of God s loving embrace and care. If you currently have a need for access to any of these buildings on a regular basis, Janie at the rectory office. Include your name, ministry, and reason for having a key.
