Mark: The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. ~ a ributed to Edmund Burke Last week in this column I provided you with links to follow the developments of the United States Bishops fall gathering where they were going to discuss the clergy abuse crisis. It came as a great surprise when, at the opening of the gathering, Cardinal Daniel DiNardo, president of the bishop s conference, announced that the Congrega on of Bishops at the Va can directed that the U.S. Bishops not vote on any concrete items regarding the clergy sex abuse crisis. The reason given for this direc ve was that in February Pope Francis is holding a mee ng in Rome of the presidents of all the bishop s conferences in the world to discuss the issue. Rome s direc ve to our bishops caught them by surprise; shocking and angering many of them. Along with our bishops I found myself stunned, and I do not remember ever being so angry with the Church. The bishops had two specific proposals they were to vote on last week. One was for a new code of zero tolerance conduct for bishops, and the other for the crea on of a special commission to review complaints made against bishops. Both of these proposals, assuming they passed, would have been steps in the right direc on, helping to restore some confidence in the leadership of the church. I fear the delay caused by the Va can s direc ve will not only con nue, but deepen the hurt and anger felt by so many both in and outside the church. I know as fact it has caused more people to give up on the church and leave the faith. It is another blow to the li le bit of credibility church leadership s ll has. It also perpetuates the belief that Rome is hiding something and con nues the perceived pa ern of the old boys club closing ranks to protect its own. It makes it appear the Va can does not really grasp the seriousness of the crisis and the need to respond in a mely manner. As I men oned to daily Mass goers, when one has cancer, you do not wait several months to do something about it, much less when there is a grave moral evil that has taken root in your church and is destroying people s faith and lives. When the news broke, I immediately texted our bishop at the mee ng to express my concerns, and assured him of our prayers during the week. Within two hours he texted me back expressing his concerns as well, and sta ng his hope that the bishops could s ll do something to restore trust in the Church by our people. With their hands ed by the Va can, at last report our bishops were discussing the following: taking non-binding votes on the proposals men oned above so that the president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops would have that input for the mee ng in Rome; holding a special session in March to confront the abuse issue, rather than wai ng for their regularly scheduled mee ng in June. In any case, eyes now turn to Rome and the gathering of bishops from around the world in February. If the stakes were high for that mee ng before, they are even more so now. Since the U.S. bishops were prevented from taking ac on last week, there needs to be a drama c and thunderous response on behalf of the universal church early in the New Year.

CCHD brings Catholic social teaching to life by funding community and economic development programs across the United States that help poor and marginalized people join together to make decisions, seek solu ons to local problems, and find ways to improve their lives and neighborhoods. 25% of funds remain in Oakland Diocese. You may also contribute all month through your white thing envelope. As always, we appreciate your generosity. Thanksgiving Day Mass Thursday, November 22nd at 9:00AM This wonderful St. Charles tradi on is the perfect way to begin your celebra on! Bring along bread or wine that will be part of your Thanksgiving table to be blessed at Mass. Following mass, the Men s Club will provide a recep on over at Borromeo Hall with goodies for all ages and the secret recipe St. Charles Fizzes for adults. There will also be other beverages. Thank you for your support of the 2018 Giving Tree. You will be bringing Christmas joy to those alone or unable to provide presents for their family. This important outreach project provides over 800 gi s, grocery store gi cards and needed household items. In 2017, we provided 965 gi s or gi cards to over 625 individuals because of the generosity of our community. Please take an ornament tag from our wooden Giving Tree in the ves bule. Shop to purchase a new gi or gi card. There are a wide variety of gi s or gi cards to fit within everyone's budget. On the label on each tag you will find an iden fying code (TVH, AN, etc.), first name, age, sex, gi descrip on, due date and whether the gi is to be returned wrapped or unwrapped. Gi receipts are required and appreciated should something not fit correctly or need to be returned. Janie has a great idea to help you not misplace ornament tags: take a picture of your tagwith your cell phone before you go shopping and leave your tag at home in a safe place. Tags are very important because we refer to them to iden fy, sort and deliver the gi s to the correct recipients. Please note that new gi s or gi cards are to be delivered to the church or rectory no later than Sunday, December 2: CCEB = Gi cards for Catholic Chari es of the East Bay s Christmas programs for clients.
