She shares with us below, the most recent event, the Senior Thanksgiving feast, hosted by the families and catechists of our fourth and fi h grade faith forma on classes, with support by staff and youth ministry. Her next event is the Advent Extravaganza (December 1 st ), an evening of prayer and Advent Wreath making. From Margaret Riley Wow! What a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner was hosted by our fourth and fi h grade Faith Forma on ministry on Sunday, November 12 th. The young people welcomed eighty-five guests from the Frank Sinatra genera on (sixty-five and older) to the feast. As the guests arrived, they entered the hall that was decorated beau fully by Marianne Kovacich, Ann Allison, Barbara Aylward, Cheryl Cahill, Stephen Clearwater, and the youth of St. Charles. The ambience was deligh ul, with decora ons, music (thank you Jim Oliver), and the smell of turkey. The hustle and bustle of the adults preparing food in the kitchen created a welcomed smell and sight for all who a ended. As everyone got se led in, there was opportunity for all gathered to get acquainted. We had ques ons on the table that helped them to share personal stories with each other. Let s just say that the energy in the hall became very warm and comfortable. Then the entertainment began. Nine children volunteered to share their talent. Ian sang a song as his sister played the guitar. Kyle played a few pieces on his trombone. Six children played the piano. Between each performance, Olivia and Jonah engaged us with humor. Meanwhile our guest were falling in love with these amazing young people. A er the entertainment, we rolled out the Bingo game, and shared a delicious dinner followed by scrump ous desserts. Our me together nurtured a gathering of people who became a community. Indeed it was an experience like no other. The Lord blessed all who gathered, and the community of St. Charles grew stronger and more united. The children did an amazing job. I feel that there is so much for which we can be grateful on this Thanksgiving. May the Lord bless each of your homes with peace, love and joy during this season of gra tude. They provide full texts of the three Scripture readings, insights into the readings, sugges ons for the prac ce of hope, faith or charity, and ques ons for individuals or small groups. It will prepare you to hear the weekly readings proclaimed at Mass each weekend. The cost is $9 or $12 for Large Print Edi- on. How will we prepare for a Christ filled Christmas? This Week with WINGS! Thursday, November 30, :30-11:30AM in Borromeo Hall Sculptor Mario Chiodo is our guest speaker this week. He will speak on his recent sculpture Remember Them-Champions of Humanity, the people who chose the more difficult road and changed our world forever. Located in the Henry J Kaiser Memorial Park in Oakland, this massive bronze monument is 25 high and 52 wide, covers 1,000 sq. and is in four sec ons, weighing over 60,000 lbs. It is the only one in the country dedicated to Civil Rights, and with four sec- ons is the largest on the west coast. Featured on the monument are the highlights and accomplishments of 25 global humanitarians such as Maya Angelou, Susan B. Anthony, Mar n Luther King and Mother Theresa to name a few. It was dedicated on May 31, A na ve of Oakland, Mario s ar s c gi became apparent at age two when he would draw on any surface and dig up clay from his backyard to sculpt faces. At the age of 12, his teachers realized his ar s- c ability and placed him in an innova ve art school for young students. As a young adult he entered the professional art world in the Halloween industry where his tremendous success led to a business. In his free me, He began sculp ng the likeness of people who inspired him throughout his life. Senior Catholic sisters, brothers, and religious order priests have offered their lives in service to others educa ng the young, comfor ng the sick, seeking jus ce for the oppressed. Today, many are frail, elderly, and in need of assistance. Your gi to the Re rement Fund for Religious helps to furnish medica ons, nursing care, and other necessi es. Any single person, sixty years of age or older, may join the group. For further details, call Karen Adams at Infant Pre-Bap sm Class for Parents & Godparents The next Pre-Bap sm Class for parents and godparents will be on Sunday, January 7, 2018 at 1PM in the church. If you have a child from infant to age six that you wish to have bap zed here at St. Charles, this is the first step in the process. If your chosen godparents live in the Bay Area we ask that they a end also. You should be a registered member of the parish for a minimum of 90 days, and worshipping with us on a regular basis. Bus Ticket Drive for the Homeless Asbury United Methodist Church hosts Open Heart Kitchen, a free hot meal provided to anyone in need on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. They also provide showers and laundry facili es as part of their community outreach. St. Charles has many volunteers who help with this wonderful ministry. One of their church members, Jacky Poulsen, ran a bus cket drive last year during the holiday season, and it was so successful that she has decided to make it an annual event! The ckets will be distributed to organiza ons who provide services to the homeless and others struggling with poverty in our community: Livermore Homeless Refuge, Open Heart Kitchen, Access Community Health, TriValley Haven, and Partners for Change. Every dollar donated will be used to purchase bus ckets! Also, Wheels is generously matching dona ons up to $1500. There are two ways you can make your tax deduc ble gi to this drive: 1. Mail a check, in any amount, payable to Asbury United Methodist Church (or AUMC), with bus ckets in the memo field (very important). Send to AUMC, 4743 East Ave., Please be sure to include your address so you can receive an with a receipt. 2. Online: go to h p://bit.ly/2017bus ckets to purchase with a credit card. You specify the number of sheets (one sheet of 10 ckets costs $16, which is a 20% discount; There is a small processing fee, also.) As I watched our homeless friends leave the shelter this morning...with bus pass clutched in their hand, I thought of YOU! It was raining and they must carry all their belongings with them. Had it not been for you and your very generous gi of bus passes, these folks would have been soaked. Once wet, they are wet all day.
