2 St Charles Borromeo Catholic Church Bulletin Published Weekly Page 2 Today s readings: January 22, 2017 Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Next week s readings: January 29, 2017 First Reading: Isaiah 8: 23 9:3 Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 1: 10-13, 17 Gospel: Ma hew 4: January 22, 2017 First Reading: Zephaniah 2:3; 3:12-13 Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 1: Gospel: Ma hew 5: 1-12a A Note from Karen Miller: Growing Older Gracefully at St. Charles In the United States in 1900, the average life expectancy was 49 years. Today it is almost 79 years. We all hope to live a long, healthy and fulfilling life without becoming a burden to our family or to society. But long life increases the probability of many more years of declining health due to age related diseases. The percentage of older adults in our popula on is growing rapidly, in par cular, those over 90 years of age. Increased longevity has a profound personal, social and financial impact not only for aging adults and their families, but for all those whose lives they touch. How might we, as a parish community, respond? In 2016, our staff had a lengthy discussion regarding our concerns about our seniors. The conversa on was triggered by the fact that one of our members had fallen at home, and was not found for two days. We discussed the importance of developing strategies to be er support our aging members. As a result, and a er much research and thought, we are beginning the first phase of our developing elder community which we have named Life Transi ons for Aging Adults (LTAA). It is our hope that LTAA will begin to address the needs of our older members, their families and their caretakers with a suppor ve community group. The LTAA. core is also planning to offer an extensive list of resources, ac vi es and volunteer opportuni es, as well as periodic educa onal presenta ons on topics of interest to seniors. We will start on March 7 th with a monthly gathering in the Pope Room at 1:00PM. Using a small group format, we will explore together the experiences of aging. The first goal is simply to enjoy the company of people who are having similar life transi ons. Through those conversa ons, members will gain support and hopefully find the humor in this process of aging. A second goal is increased awareness and understanding of the physical, emo onal and spiritual challenges of older adults. Discussion and sharing in the group will also focus on ways to manage different aspects of the aging process to enhance quality of life, including prac cal needs such as home safety. As we age, me seems to accelerate. A sense of vulnerability and anxiety, and at mes even fear, can prevent us from experiencing joy and a sense of purpose as we go through life. Gathering in community offers us the gi of shared wisdom, a gi that benefits everyone. The opportunity to share experiences offers an awareness and understanding of the reality of aging. Our staff, and the core team for LTAA. hope that you will accept our invita on to gather for conversa on, laughter and support. For informa on, contact Karen at karen@stcharlesborromeo, or call the office, ext. 113.

Church Humor...Thoughts for the New Year My goal for 2016 was to lose just 10 pounds. Only 15 to go! Ate salad for dinner! Mostly croutons & tomatoes. Really just one big, round crouton covered with tomato sauce. And cheese. FINE, it was a pizza. I ate a pizza. I just did a week s cardio a er walking into a spider web. I don t mean to brag but...i finished my 14 day diet in 3 hours and 20 minutes. A recent study has found that women who carry a li le extra weight live longer than men who men on it. Kids today don t know how easy they have it. When I was young, I had to walk 9 feet through shag carpet to change the TV channel. Rest in Peace Bob Ferro, husband of Dee Ferro We honor those who have annual requests first. We would appreciate pre-payment on all Mass requests in If you have a Mass that you do not wish to con nue in 2017, please let Janie know. Thank you. Not only is our AED for emergencies here at the church, but also can be used for emergencies within the neighborhood. That s one of the important reasons to have the AED registered, to assist our members of our local community. We ask please DO NOT open the AED cabinet unless in an EMERGENCY. The cabinet is alarmed, and the only way to turn it off is by a special key. We are in the process of comple ng the logis cs of the two AED/CPR training programs we wish to implement. We will start with Level 1 training (AED/CPR cer fica on) which will be directed mostly for parish staff, and key ac ve parishioners of the church. Level 2 training will focus mostly on hands-only CPR and AED usage. More info on this will be posted on the Health Ministry webpage located on the church s website.
