2 St Charles Borromeo Catholic Church Bulletin Published Weekly Page 2 Today s readings: August 26, 2018 First Reading: Joshua 24:1-2, 15-17, 18b Second Reading: Ephesians 5: Gospel: John 6: st Sunday in Ordinary Time August 26, 2018 Next week s readings: September 2, 2018 First Reading: Deuteronomy 4:1-2, 6-8 Second Reading: James 1:17-18, 21b- Gospel: John 6: As I was driving down the freeway tonight, fre ng a bit about how to write the perfect ar cle about Faith Forma on (with hopes to persuade young and old alike), conveying the meaning and importance of Faith Forma on, a big truck drives by, with the words FRESH PRODUCE EVERYDAY! Shazam - the Spirit graced me with an overflow of metaphors regarding the gi and blessings of Produce and Faith and the importance of daily intake for both. 1. We all know fresh produce consumed every day is good for one s health and well-being, and naturally is highly recommended. Well, so too, nurturing our faith daily is an important prac ce for all. Our hope in Faith Forma on - Preschool, Elementary, Middle School, Jr. and Sr. High Youth Ministry, is to collaborate with Families in nurturing Faith development for Everyone. Most importantly, helping to nurture our rela onship with God, (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) who is constantly pursuing us out of His great Love for us. 2. The factors of produc on for produce include land, labor, capital and entrepreneurship. The factors for Faith Forma on include an Open heart, a willing Spirit to engage and the discipline to learn and grow through study of Scripture, par cipa ng in the Sacraments regularly, studying Church teachings, Service, engaging in Community and a daily commitment to prayer. All these will indeed nurture and strengthen our rela onship with the Lord. 3. There is a lot of junk food out there, o en temp ng us to consume it rather than the Fresh Produce that is good for our bodies. So too, there is a lot of fake food that we think connects us to God, but we have to be careful, prayerful and discerning on how we feed our Spirits. As Catholic Chris ans, an important symbol is the Cross, which reflects a lifestyle that is not always easy, and requires a lot of dying to ourselves, so that we can be born to new life in Christ. This is a very important component for ALL who choose to follow Christ. A profound experience helps to sum this up. This past week, I was at the hospital visi ng one of our parishioners who was a few hours away from his second surgery within a 24-hour period. Naturally he was extremely uncomfortable due to the fact he was unable to eat because of the surgeries, and he was hooked up to all kinds of various tubes. Knowing how uncomfortable he was, Ma hew s Mom, said, Ma hew let s sing that Christmas song you learned when you were a boy. So Ma hew began to sing along with his Mom this gorgeous faith-filled song. At that moment, tears sprang forth for me as I experienced the presence of God s love and tender mercy embrace the two of them, as they sang together. Seeds of faith that were planted in him through his parents at a very young age graced him during this difficult me years later. So with all this being said, we invite ALL families with children ages 3-18 to check out our various programs. We have many programs for ADULTS as well; please check our bulle n to see what might help you and your family grow in your Faith Lives. The Senior Singles group will be mee ng the first Friday evening of the month for dinner. Any single person, sixty years of age or older, may join the group. This fall, our small group series is en tled The Reckless Love of God and will run for five weeks, star ng October 14th. Why are we offering a series on God s love? Many people are experiencing conflict with friends, family, co-workers and neighbors over the numerous difficult issues facing our country. This is an important me to reflect on and prac ce the principles of our faith regarding love of God and love of others, the two great commandments. Even if we are not engaged in these dialogs, we face the challenges of youth, family life, being the breadwinner of our household, caring for elderly parents, being a single adult, facing issues of re rement or fragile health and more. We gather to remember that God s love is reckless and will sustain us. We also gather to remember the kind of love we must give to others, even those with whom we strongly disagree. On behalf of the CISSP Backpack Project and the St. Charles Social Concerns Commi ee, we offer a hear elt Thank you to all who have helped make the 26th year of this project an amazing success! In conjunc on with 9 other interfaith congrega ons in Livermore, the CISSP project provided 1100 Livermore students of families in need, kindergarten through 12 th grade, with a new backpack full of supplies and a gi card for new shoes for their first day of school! Many thanks to the parishioners of St. Charles who helped with this year s project in any way, including purchasing a backpack and designated supplies to fill the pack or dona ng funds to cover costs of packs, supplies and shoe gi cards. To all those who helped sell packs and collect dona ons, transport and unpack supplies, print the grade level tags (thank you office staff), fill and transport backpacks, and distribute the packs to the excited Livermore students or their school, we are forever grateful! Through your amazing generosity and prayers, the parishioners of St. Charles filled 114 middle/high, 191 elementary, and 101 kindergarten backpacks. A special thank you to students of our Youth Ministry program and the Tri-Valley Young Adult Ministry for your help transpor ng and unpacking boxes of supplies to set the assembly line; and, helping with backpack distribu on. Again, this project has been greatly blessed by your annual support and prayers, your unending generosity, the gi of your me, and most importantly, God s love and grace!! We are blessed! (NOTE: new me!) If you have a child from infant to age six that you wish to have bap zed here at St. Charles, this is the first step in the process. If your chosen godparents live in the Bay Area we ask that they a end also. You should be a registered member of the parish for a minimum of 90 days, and worshipping with us on a regular basis. If you are planning to be a godparent for a friend or family member s child, be sure to check and see if a class is required by that parish, and if so, then you can register to a end, also.
