2 St Charles Borromeo Catholic Church Bulletin Published Weekly Page 2 Today s readings: April 22, 2018 First Reading: Acts of the Apostles 4:8-12 Second Reading: 1 John 3:1-2 Gospel: John 10:11-18 A Message from Fr. Mark: Fourth Sunday of Easter April 22, 2018 Next week s readings: April 29, 2018 First Reading: Acts of the Apostles 9:26-31 Second Reading: 1 John 3:18-24 Gospel: John 15:1-8 Now is the me to unleash the crea vity of mercy, to bring about new undertakings. These words, found in the Apostolic Le er Misericordia et Misera (Mercy and Misery), released on the last day of the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy (November 20, 2016), are not words Pope Francis wrote without the inten on of making happen. During the week of April 8 11, 2018, Pope Francis gathered in Rome approximately 600 Missionaries of Mercy for a me of forma on, educa on and sharing of the experiences we had during the Extraordinary Jubilee year in Although our ministry as Missionaries of Mercy was originally to end with the comple on of the Extraordinary Jubilee year, the Holy Father called upon us to con nue our ministry as a concrete sign that the grace of the Jubilee remains alive and effec ve the world over. (Misericordia et Misera, #9). During our me in Rome, Pope Francis emphasized the importance of mercy in the church. It is clear he intended the Jubilee of Mercy to highlight how we should be living every day. One of the things I took away from our audience with him is his convic on that mercy, the primary a ribute of God s love for us, should be the quality that shapes the church and our lives as Catholics. Since mercy animated the ministry of Jesus, so should it animate the ministry of his church. As Pope Francis counseled at the end of the Extraordinary Jubilee year: the Holy year, a me rich in mercy must con nue to be celebrated and lived out in our communi es. Mercy cannot become a mere parenthesis in the life of the Church; it cons tutes her very existence. (Misericordia et Misera, #1). Mercy lived out in ac on is what will show the world the Catholic Church is relevant. It will bring people back to the church, it will draw new members to the church, and to our Lord Jesus Christ. And so, we need to unleash the crea vity of mercy. As we met in Rome we heard stories from some of the Missionaries of Mercy about their crea vity in ministry. One Missionary of Mercy came from Australia, where his diocese is the size of Belgium! In his diocese there are many rural parishes in the outback without priests and where Mass is celebrated maybe once a month. For the Extraordinary Jubilee year, he was given a mobile home. He spent the year visi ng each of those rural parishes for several weeks. Wherever he went he told the parishioners he was there to simply listen to their stories with a compassionate and merciful ear. People flocked to him and he was able to provide comfort, hope, assurance and celebrate reconcilia on with many. By the end of the year he was called the Diocesan M.O.M. (Missionary of Mercy). Another Missionary came from Panama City, Panama. During the Extraordinary Jubilee year, he went to the equivalent of Grand Central Sta on in Panama City. There he set up a confessional in the middle of the sta on. Tourists, commuters and others stopped to celebrate the Sacrament of Mercy (confession) with him; many expressing how they had wanted to celebrate the sacrament but their schedules never allowed them to do so. However, since he was where they were, they took advantage of the opportunity before running to catch their trains or busses. His diocese produced a documentary about his me at the sta on, and it aired na onally. There are other examples of course. I heard about a priest who had taken an old ambulance and refit it as a mobile confessional. He would park it outside of malls and other public places to offer free spiritual healthcare and celebrate God s mercy with any who stopped in. The challenge to every member of the church is simple yet profound; to find crea ve ways to bring mercy to those nearest to us in both our words and ac ons. While the Jubilee of Mercy ended in November of 2016, the prac ce of mercy is essen al to who we are, and is desperately needed today. More than 2000 years have passed since Jesus, God s mercy incarnate, walked the earth, yet the works of mercy we accomplish today con nue to make God s goodness visible to a suffering world.

Church Humor: Sharing his faith There was a barber who paid close a en on at his parish whenever the topic of evangeliza on was discussed. He thought he should be doing more to share his faith with his customers. The next morning the barber told the Lord in prayer, Today I m going to witness to the first customer who walks through my door. A man came in as he open his shop and said, I need a shave. The barber said, Yes, sir! Just have a seat and I ll be right with you. The barber went into the back and prayed a quick prayer saying, Lord, the first customer just came in and I m going to witness to him. Give me the wisdom to know just the right thing to say. Amen. Then the barber came out with his straight razor in one hand and a Bible in the other and told his customer: I have a ques on for you: Are you ready to meet your Maker? Thank you. We honor those who have annual requests first. We would appreciate pre-payment on all Mass requests in If you have a Mass that you do not wish to con nue in 2018, please let Janie know.
