2 St Charles Borromeo Catholic Church Bulletin Published Weekly Page 2 Today s readings: July 23, th Sunday in Ordinary Time Next week s readings: July 30, 2017 First Reading: Wisdom 12:13, Second Reading: Romans 8: Gospel: Ma hew 13: July 23, 2017 First Reading: 1 Kings 3:5, 7-12 Second Reading: Romans 8: Gospel: Ma hew 13: A Note from Janie Wright: It s summer me, and life is a bit more relaxed in the parish. It looked like an opportunity to become the author of this page for a week, instead of just the editor, adding commas and spell-checking other staff members! As Fr. Richard always taught me, a good le er covers three points, so here goes: Monthly white thing envelopes: We really appreciate that many parish families have chosen to donate to us electronically, either by Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) direct from your checking account, or by Credit Card (miles for your next vaca on trip). So why do we con nue to send you the white thing envelope each month?? The simple answer is that because we use bulk rate mail with the post office, every piece of mail must be iden cal! Also, there are certain mes during the year that you might wish to contribute in addi on to your normal the, i.e. CISSP Backpacks, Lent Collec ons, Religious Re rement or other special requests, and so you would have an envelope handy at home. Just a reminder, it is really helpful to our collec on counters if you write your family name on the inside of your envelope! Our thing envelopes are very convenient, as you only ever need to write one check for mul ple dona ons just mark on the envelope what amount goes to which source, and we will see that it is divided correctly. ALL checks put into the white thing envelopes MUST be payable to St. Charles Church, not to individual chari es, ministries or events; otherwise, we can t process them. Mass Inten ons: It is a lovely remembrance to have a Mass offered for a deceased family member. Here at St. Charles, we have always honored yearly requests, and do so out of respect for our long- me parish members. We are unique within the Trivalley area, as we only have one priest assigned to our parish, and we are not allowed to have an inten on for any of the days we provide well-prepared Lay-Presided Communion Services. Canon Law states that one Mass each weekend must be for the people, and this is the 9:30AM Mass each Sunday here at St. Charles. Canon Law also states that there can be only one inten- on per Mass, and so that is why we are not allowed to double book a Mass, other than two members of the same family as you some mes see in the bulle n. So doing the math, we have about 370 Masses offered each year, and we have 280 annual requests. Then we subtract any mes that Fr. Mark is away on vaca on, retreat, special assignments or jury duty, and that leaves us with only 2-3 open available Mass Inten on requests each month! I can only schedule one month of Mass inten ons at a me, once Fr. Mark knows when he might be away the following month. San Damiano Retreat in Danville will accept your request for a Mass, but I m not certain that they tell you which day it will be said. Likewise, the Jesuit, Dominican, Franciscan and other religious orders, might be able to help you with a par cular Mass request. Prayer Circle: Did you know that each week I send out an to 130+ members of our Prayer Circle Ministry? I am given prayer requests by phone call, and in person, asking for the prayers of our members, and this is the way it works...first and foremost, we respect the privacy of the people, and so we must have the permission of the person or family that could use our prayers (think HIPPA). It is a way to report the death of a parish member or close rela ve, to ask for healing prayers of those who are ill or hospitalized or having medical tes ng done to see what an issue might be. It is helpful for the pray-ers to know the name of the person and to have a clear idea of the need, but I can be as specific or vague as necessary. I add my own ideas for local, na onal or global needs, without ever trying to be poli cal. It is also a way to be reminded of events and happenings here in the Livermore area, as well as at St. Charles. In order to balance the tone from very serious (which it could become), it also contains Happy News each week, when I add special birthdays, anniversaries (permission is needed and that takes extra me, so that s why there are fewer than I would like to include), and I fill in with news about my weekend or family events. All you have to do is include these people in your normal prayer me, thinking about them, and asking for God s special blessing for them. Many of the members have moved from Livermore, and this is a great way for them to feel connected to St. Charles. We don t always get the answer we would like, but I o en hear that the person/family feels a peace and strength knowing that their St. Charles family is holding them in prayer. If you think you would like to join Prayer Circle, send me an and I will add you to the Ministry. Prayer Circle comes out most Thursdays in late a ernoon, and includes special blessings to those who receive it...

Church Humor... Groaners Buy one Oprah, get Winfrey. Cremators make their money the old-fashioned way; they urn it. Why is it a dad-bod and not a father figure? My obsession with building townhouses is going to give me a complex one of these days. I once dated an apostrophe. Too possessive. Contor onists are the worst anger management counselors because they get bent out of shape so easily. Rest in Peace All the Faithful Departed We honor those who have annual requests first. We would appreciate pre-payment on all Mass requests in If you have a Mass that you do not wish to con nue in 2017, please let Janie know. Thank you. From the beginning, it has obeyed Christ s command to go out and preach the gospel to everyone in the world. This missionary work involves recrui ng missionaries, training and equipping them for their task, and support the new, young churches un l they are established. The Society for the Propaga on of the Faith is established in every diocese to organize support for the missions. Each year, it appeals for funds on Mission Sunday (10/22/17). Also, every year, it brings to each parish, one of the groups working in the missions to speak about their par cular work. This year, the St. Patrick Fathers, who work in Africa, Brazil and Grenada, have been assigned to speak to St. Charles. We will have a second collec on taken up at all Masses that weekend to support their work. Funds are pooled by Propaga on of the Faith and distributed by them to the individual mission groups. Any dona ons you wish to give by check should be payable to St. Charles.
