We go on vacation every year and own a car or two. Most of us take this all for granted. Did you ever notice that people with the least amount of possessions are usually the most grateful? Recall the Good Samaritan Gospel. Priest and Levite saw suffering but showed no mercy. Recall the rich man, who never saw Lazarus right before his eyes, and showed no mercy. Today, Jesus sees ten lepers from afar and shows extraordinary mercy. Mary s entire life, declares Francis, was modeled on Jesus, Mercy-Made-Flesh. Indeed, standing at the cross, Mary saw Jesus mercy take flesh when Jesus showed mercy to the executioners. So Pope Francis recommends we frequently pray the Salve Regina, Hail, Holy Queen, asking her to ever look upon us with mercy, so that we might be worthy to gaze upon the face of her merciful Son Jesus. May we do so not only in eternity, but here and now, opening our eyes to see Jesus in others, and our hearts to serve Jesus in others by loving deeds of unconditional mercy. Maybe it was the day a very special person asked us to the senior prom, or perhaps it was our wedding day. Maybe it was the day we learned that we were expecting a longawaited child, or the day we got an overdue promotion. There was elation in our hearts and lightness in our step, an extraordinary vitality throughout the day. We probably got on the phone right away to tell at least a few key people about our good fortune. This is surely how Naaman and the leper must have felt when they were rid of their terrible diseases. They were hard-pressed to contain their gratitude, and although they were both unfamiliar with the customs of a foreign land, they had the good manners to thank the people responsible for their cures. 4 What Are You Doing For Thanksgiving? How about a St. Boniface Thanksgiving dinner? We know that there are many people who do not have a family dinner to go to, so why not enjoy a day of Thanksgiving with your Church family. If you are interested in coming, we will have a sign up sheet available beginning the weekend of October 8/9. We would like everyone to bring a dish to share, your favorite Thanksgiving dish, potatoes, vegetable, deserts, salads, etc. Dinner will be after the 11 am Mass on Thanksgiving Day. Let s start a new tradition, spending time with the people we love, our Church family. May He Rest in Peace Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Cihla family on the recent loss of their father, Joseph Cihla. Joe was a long time member of St. Boniface and the 5pm choir, & played the trumpet with the Effingham County Community Orchestra. He will be truly missed. This was successfully achieved by 45 people giving 236 hours to help someone else. There were hosts who interacted with the families, cooks, those who donated needed items and food, those who set up and broke down our Faith Formation classes, and people who did all the laundry. The following was left by the Family Promise families: Dear St. Boniface friends, Please accept this heartfelt thank you for being such awesome hosts! You all genuinely cared for us and loved doing for us. I could tell from the moment we arrived. It truly makes a difference when you know someone truly cares about you without hesitation. 5 Congratulations Please join me in congratulating Charles and Nancy Miller on their nomination for the Bishops Garland Award The Diocese of Savannah Bishop Gartland Awards will be presented this year by Bishop Gregory J. Hartmayer at the 11:30 a.m. Mass at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist on November 20, 2016, the Feast of Christ the King. Charlie and Nancy Miller will celebrate fifty-one years of marriage this year. They have two daughters and three grandchildren. Charles grew up in PA, retired from the US Navy, graduated from University of MD. After various engineering positions, he retired from Gulfstream Aerospace in Nancy grew up in VA, graduated in nursing from Rockingham Hospital an affiliate of JMU and after years of public health care, doctors offices and home administration, and retired about twenty years ago. Charlie and Nancy moved to Effingham County in 2001 and found St. Boniface as a spiritual and friendly parish. They have both shared being a part of Parish Life, Hospitality, Family Promise and Outreach and have been active with the Yard Sale, Chicken BBQ and Oyster Roast. Additionally, Charlie is active in Knights of Columbus 4th degree -Grand Knight , Treasurer , Trustee 2015-Present, Extraordinary Minister 2003-Present, Parish Council president , Grounds Maintenance, Choir 2007-Present, Building Committee Nancy continues to actively support the CCW since 2001 as Treasurer , President , Hospitality-Bereavement Present. Co-Sponsored Roses for Babies 2004, Vacation Bible School , Instructed Hand Piecing Quilt Classes and Designed and supervised construction of Church s Signature Quilt 2008, Designed and supervised a quilt for donation to Debt Reduction Over the past fifteen years they have watched with wonder at the progression of St. Boniface Catholic Church and look forward to continue worshiping and participating with our parish. Priesthood Sunday October 30, 2016 is Priesthood Sunday, a special day set aside to celebrate the Priesthood and honor Christ as Priest as well as the men who were called to be his priests here on earth. Catholic parishes throughout the country will rally in support of their priests in a celebration of the American priesthood, honoring both the priesthood and their own priests. On this special day, Priesthood Sunday, please make your appreciation known to all of our former and present priests for their courage and generosity. A simple note, a smile, a phone call or even a Nice sermon Father will go a long way towards letting them know how much they are appreciated.

6 Faith Formation News Help can hunger With Thanksgiving around the corner, we give thanks to God for all we have. But there are families right here in Effingham County who struggle to put food on the table and may go without this Thanksgiving. We can make a difference and teach our kids the joy and importance of sharing with the less fortunate by encouraging them to participate in our Thanksgiving Food Drive. We need stuffing mix, cranberry sauce, canned fruit, canned green beans, mac and cheese, canned milk, French-fried onions, cream of mushroom soup, turkey gravy, Jell-O, instant pudding and bags of sugar for Thanksgiving food baskets. Please encourage your children to bring non-perishable, canned and boxed donations to Faith Formation class from now until November 12, There will be no Faith Formation classes on October 9. For any questions or concerns about Faith Formation, please contact Celeste Gish at Respect Life Month Are We Observers or "Doers" in the Abortion Debate? Are we doing enough? The answer is an emphatic "no" as it is so easy to simply tune out and put this horror out of our minds and sight. Yet, nearly all violence done against human beings involves three types of people: the Perpetrator, the Victim and the Observer. This is sometimes called the "Tragic Triangle". With abortion, the abortionist, in collusion with the parent(s) is the perpetrator, the child is the victim, and the observers are all the rest of us. Some believe that we as observers have an equal or greater responsibility than the perpetrators because we can be more objective and if we were really motivated, we could stop this daily slaughter of the innocents. We can start by making sure we vote for LIFE in the forthcoming elections. The VIRTUS "Protecting God's Children for Adults" training will be held at St. Boniface Parish Sunday, October 23, 2016 from 2:30PM 3:30PM Lunch will be provided This training is required for all volunteer and paid adults 18 and over who in the course of their ministry come into contact with minors: Choir, Ushers, EM s, Altar Servers, Faith Formation, Youth Group, etc It is also required for all employees of the diocese. Registration is required prior to attending via online at VIRTUS.org to receive credit for the session. No one under the age of 18 is allowed due to the sensitive subject matter. Please arrive early no admittance once the session begins. Latecomers will be asked to reschedule. St. Boniface Baptism Class Sunday, October 30, 2016 St. Boniface s final baptism class of 2016 will be held on Sunday, October 30, 12:30 3:00 PM. This class is intended for soon to be parents, first time parents, and parents of first child to be baptized in the Catholic faith. You must be registered in the parish and have contacted Father Martino prior to attending the class.
