3 November 11, nd Sunday in Ordinary Time I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the other contributors to the treasury. For they all contributed out of their abundance; but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, her whole living. (MARK 12:43-44) Jesus gets right to the point we are all called to give money to support the mission of the Church, regardless of our circumstance. No gift is too small or insignificant! Giving money to support the mission of our local parish is a matter of our faith, just like praying and participating in parish ministries. When you make a financial offering, is it from your first fruits or from what is left over? TODAY S READINGS First Reading The widow of Zarephath had only a handful of flour and a little oil, but made a little cake for Elijah (1 Kings 17:10-16). Psalm Praise the Lord, my soul! (Psalm 146). Today s Gospel passage provides us with one last example of what the vocation to discipleship means, and one example of what it doesn t mean. A destitute widow shows us that discipleship means following Jesus way of service, even if it requires giving one s livelihood (or life). The scribes show us by their bad example that discipleship should entail a vocation to extend God s care to those who are most in need. In our reading from the book of Kings another widow and her son are close to death. They too give what little they have, but they are rewarded by Elijah with food enough for a year. And the reading from the Letter to the Hebrews reminds us that Jesus sacrificed his life to bring salvation to those who eagerly await him (Hebrews 9:28). Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. The auspicious date was actually a well-established religious holiday, the feast of Saint Martin of Tours, a beloved soldier saint of the army of Rome. After World War II, Armistice Day was changed to Veterans Day in the United States and Remembrance Day in Britain, but of course the feast of Saint Martin endures. Martin was named after Mars, the god of war, and against the advice of his parents he went on his own to church. He became a catechumen at the age of ten. By fifteen he was enlisted in the cavalry in France. Coming across a poor man, Martin had an impulse to divide his bright red soldier s cape and clothe him. He later had the insight that he had served Christ, and the other half of his cape became a lifelong sign to him of his duty to serve the poor. Housed in a tiny church capella or chapel, the cape became a great object of pilgrimage on the way to Compostella, and a favored place for the prayers of soldiers. Martin was not so eager to serve as bishop as he had been as a soldier, and legend says that he hid in a barn filled with geese to avoid episcopal election. To this day, the customary meal for November 11 is goose! Traditionally, this is the last feast day before winter closes in, and begins a period of fasting once known as Saint Martin s Lent or Martinmas, that later developed into the season of Advent. Rev. 5 Thanksgiving Dinner Thanksgiving will soon be here! Please join us for the 3rd annual St. Boniface Thanksgiving Dinner. The holiday falls on November 22nd this year and will take place after the 10 am Mass. It's early so don't be left out. Sign up sheets are in the back of the Church. We need to know your name, how many in your party, what you would like to bring, and your phone number. Make sure your dish feeds at least 6 people. Any questions please contact Robin Smith Outreach Committee Annual Coat Drive & Winter Wear The Parish Outreach Committee begins it s annual coat drive for needy children of Effingham County this weekend thru November 18. Your generosity in past has helped hundreds of children stay warm in the winter. This year we have been asked to make sure coats are in compliance with school policy. Solid Navy, white, ash, or black or school designated color; combination of no more than 2 of the above solid colors, no logo larger than a credit card. No hoods, no prints, plaids, camouflage or other patterns or designs. With all the restrictions, I asked what else do the children need for winter wear. I was told that socks, shoes, under clothing, and gloves would be very much appreciated. You may drop your donations by the parish office or there will be a box located in the foyer for your donations. If you have any questions please contact Pattie in the parish office. We had a house full of people! I sat there last night watching the 3 families eating dinner together as one big family, talking about school and their work, and then afterwards, the 9 kids playing together, laughing, teasing one another, arguing over who was the best at whatever game they were playing. All the parents interacted with all the kids (not just their own). It was a beautiful sight to see. I thought to myself, here are 9 kids who aren't sleeping in a car or on a pallet on a floor, who have had hot, home-cooked meals all week, who are playing and doing what kids should be doing at that age. I was afraid I was going to cry but then I would have had to explain why, so I willed myself not to! Thank you again for living out our call to Stewardship by giving of your time, talent and treasure to help the poor and needy in our community. Thanksgiving break coming up Faith Formation will be closed November 18 and November 25 for Thanksgiving break. Classes will resume on Sunday, December 2. Excused absences Absence from Faith Formation is considered excused in the case of illness, family emergency, funeral or previously-scheduled family occasion (such as a wedding). Students in sacramental classes (grades 2, 8 and 9) are permitted only two excused absences. Please notify the DRE by phone or , including the child s grade, with any excused absence. The Vocation Office will sponsor a discernment retreat Answer the Call for men ages 18 to 40 from Friday, December 28 th at noon to Saturday, December 29 th at 2pm at Little Ocmulgee State Park & Lodge in Helena, GA (south of Dublin). This training is required for all who provide either paid or volunteer ministry in our diocese who in the course of their ministry come into contact with minors.
