How are they related? The Suffering Servant of Isaiah undergoes much distress and ridicule, but is able to bear it because he has listened to the promptings of God day after day. The psalm tells us that God listens, too. God hears our prayers for help and is always ready to save us. As our faith deepens, so does our desire to do the works of justice and charity that build up the reign of God. God directs our actions in ways we often cannot see, and we don t always see the results. Like many saints, he was from a noble family and suffered form an assortment of health issues. He became a Jesuit and soon became a professor of theology writing in defense of the Catholic Church against the Protestant reformers. Like his fellow patron of catechists, St. Charles Borromeo, Bellarmine wrote his own catechism for catechists to use to teach the faith. Bellarmine gave much of his riches to the poor. He was an Italian Cardinal who died in 1621 and was made the patron saint of people with down syndrome because he dedicated his life to defending the truth and protecting the dignity of each individual person, including those who were the most vulnerable. Robert Bellarmine Words of Wisdom: For if I seek my maker, I find God alone. If I seek the material from which He made me, I find absolutely nothing. From this you can conclude that whatever is in me was made by God and wholly belongs to God. If I ask about my nature, I find that I am the image of God. If I ask about my end, I find God himself, who is my supreme and total good. Therefore, I will recognize that I have a great bond with and need for God, as He alone is my creator, my maker, my Father, my exemplar, my happiness, my all. And If I understand this, what can happen except that I seek Him ardently, that I think of Him, that I yearn for Him, desire to see and embrace Him? Should I not be horrified at the dense darkness of my heart which for so long has considered, desired, and sought anything other than God, who alone is my all? We inherit this tradition from an old Roman custom via medieval England. Interestingly, that has not been the practice elsewhere, and parishes abroad often do carry just the name of the neighborhood. In Ireland, the Roman (English) practices didn t take hold, and so churches are known simply by the street they are on, or by a nickname. Saint Francis of Assisi in Dublin is often called Adam and Eve after a pub in the same street. The pub sign is an interesting carving of our first parents, so they become patrons by default. Increasingly in the United States, we are seeing a familiar European pattern emerge when a few churches, each bearing the name of a patron saint or mystery, are gathered into one parish that bears a different name. Thus, we might hear of a parish of Midvalley City comprised of Saint Mary, Saint Francis, and Saint Ursula churches. Once a church has been consecrated, its name may not normally be changed. Therefore, when parishes are merged, a new name is given to the parish, which may or may not be that of a heavenly patron, but the church buildings retain their names. In the process, we have lost sight of some worthy patrons of old but have also seen new parishes open dedicated to twentieth-century saints like Edith Stein, Katharine Drexel, and Mother Teresa. Rev. Cost is $5 per person with children under 10 free with a paying adult. We will move any kids who need to get to their Sunday school classes to the front of the line and parents can hang out while they wait for their kids to finish class. Part of the celebration is a "Coming Home" as the parish honor parishioners who shared in Cabrini's "roots of faith" and helped grow the parish. This weekend we will take a moment at each Mass to recognize and bless the dedicated women and men! who donate their time and talent to nurturing our children s faith. Whether catechists, assistant catechists, office assistants or prayer checkers, they are each essential to the ministry and future of St. Boniface parish. Confirmation commitment There will be a brief ceremony to recognize and bless Confirmation candidates during the Sunday, September 23, 11:00 Mass. Please make every effort to attend if you have a child in the ninth-grade Confirmation class. Excused absences Absence from Faith Formation is considered excused in the case of illness, family emergency, funeral or previously-scheduled family occasion (such as a wedding). Students in sacramental classes (grades 2, 8 and 9) are permitted only two excused absences. Please notify the DRE by phone or , including the child s grade, with any excused absence.
