(JOHN 18:36) How often do we put all our time and energy into building a kingdom here on earth, forgetting that life here is short? The real kingdom is in the next life. It s easy to understand today s scriptures as events that happened long ago and far away, or predictions that will come true somewhere, some day. But they invite us to claim Christ as our King here and now. Jesus words to Pilate in the Gospel remind us that his kingdom transcends time and place. And the prophecies from Daniel and Revelation give us reason to be faithful to Christ our King right here and right now. By concluding the year with this feast we are proclaiming our faith that Jesus Christ is the one and only King over all seasons, all peoples, and all of creation. We ve already seen how on Saint Martin s Day, November 11, medieval continental Europe observed a great harvest day of Thanksgiving, with games, dances, parades, and a festive dinner of roast goose. With the goose went ample draughts of Saint Martin s Wine, the first wine of the new harvest. Martinmas celebrated full barns and larders stocked for the winter. Even after the Reformation, the tradition of eating goose on Saint Martin s Day was retained in Holland, and it was there that our Pilgrims encountered this tradition. When Governor Bradford sent four hunters out into the Massachusetts wilderness in the autumn of 1621, they did indeed find some geese and ducks, and were persuaded by the indigenous people to try turkey, too. Just as the liturgical calendar has been tweaked over the years, President Roosevelt moved Thanksgiving to the third Thursday in November in 1939, probably to extend the Christmas shopping season. The protest was so great that in 1941 the day established by President Lincoln, the last Thursday in November, was restored. 5 Advent Penance Service The Advent Penance Service will be held on Wednesday, December 5, 2018 at 7pm. We will have 3 Priests available to hear confessions. Children s Christmas Pageant Sign Up It s that time of year again, beginning Saturday November 17 children are welcome to sign up for the annual children s pageant performed during the Christmas Eve Mass. The sign up sheet will be in the church vestibule through December 9th. This year we welcome all children Pre-K through 6th grade to perform. Additionally, we are in need of a minimum of 4 middle school students to narrate. There will be 2 practices: December 16 following 11am mass and December 18 at 7pm. The narrators are required to attend both practices and all children are required to attend at least one practice. BARREN TREE CCW will have the Barren Tree set up in St. Boniface Hall at the beginning of Advent, Saturday, December 1, There will be 262 tags for children, ages infant through 10 years, and the maximum amount for these gifts should be $8.00. These gifts will go to the needy in our community. There will be 8 tags for the Treutlen House boys, ages 13 through 19. These gifts should be $ The counselor at Treutlen House suggests Wal- Mart or Tanger Outlet gift cards. There will be some tags on the tree for the Family Promise children. These gifts should be $ Since these children do not yet have a permanent home, the suggested gift is Wal-Mart gift cards. The Outreach Assistance Office is now accepting applications for Christmas food baskets and children s gifts up to age 10, beginning Wednesday, November 28. If you or someone you know is in need, please refer them to the Outreach Assistance Office. Your generosity with our Thanksgiving baskets was overwhelming, and we had many items left over, however, we will need a few items to replenish for the Christmas baskets. Canned green beans, corn, fruit cocktail, beef gravy packet, cream of mushroom soup,& french fried onions. If you would like to make a monetary donation, please put it into the poor box and mark it as Christmas basket.

Excused absences Absence from Faith Formation is considered excused in the case of illness, family emergency, funeral or previously-scheduled family occasion (such as a wedding). All proceeds will benefit the youth trip to the National March for Life in Washington DC in National March for Life St. Boniface Youth are headed to Washington DC for the March for Life January 17-20, Youth grades 7-12 are invited to attend. CALLING ALL HIGH SCHOOL TEENS - The Savannah Deanery Youth will be helping with the Children of Forsyth Christmas Carnival on December 2. We are expecting 125 children who are homeless or experiencing extreme hardship, and their parents. We will be serving lunch and having carnival games. All volunteers are asked to be at the tennis court end of Forsyth Park at 12:30. We will provide a late lunch for our teens after the program is over. Parents can pick up at 3:00.
