2 June 7, 2015 Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit". Matthew 28:19 The disciples were to baptize people because baptism unites a believer with Jesus Christ in his or her death to sin and resurrection to new life. Baptism symbolizes submission to Christ, a willingness to live God's way, and identification with God's covenant people. To put it more simply, we become Disciples of Jesus Christ and as we mature in our faith and love, we become His STEWARDS-giving of ourselves sacrificially in the TIME we spend developing our relationship with God, in using our TALENTS (the charism the Holy Spirit bestows on each of us to use in our individual ministries, and to use our God given TREASURE to build his Kingdom by supporting the disadvantaged and those in need among us. The question we always need to ask ourselves--are WE MATURING AND LIVING OUR LIVES AS GOD'S DISCIPLES AND STEWARDS? Your answer could bestow upon you the true Joy of Salvation. 3 An invitation for Sunday, June 14 Fr. Jonathan will be speaking to us on Sunday, June 14, after the 8:30 a.m. Mass giving a keynote address on "What It Means to Be Catholic". He will be sharing his journey home to the Catholic Church. He was an Anglican priest. He is from Liverpool, England, is married and has three children. Please invite your Catholic and non-catholic friends to attend this inspiring address. Family Promise The Families are coming!!!! ST. Boniface will be hosting the needy families of our community beginning on Sunday, June 14 through Sun., June 21. There will be a meeting on Monday, June 8 in the Faith Formation Bldg. at 7 PM to finalize the schedule. Since many parishioners will be on vacation your help will be needed to insure a successful week. If you haven t participated before, we will provide the necessary orientation and answer any questions. Family Promise makes a difference in the lives of the children of Effingham County. For those of you who remember Sister Ann, we wanted to give a reflection of what she meant to St. Boniface. Sister Jo - later changed her name to her given name, Sister Ann Miner She was from Buffalo New York and wore her Buffalo Bills jacket in the winter! She sang and danced and was so good for our new mission church! Rick and Debbie Rafter recall She would visit our house every Wednesday night for "family night" with our three young kids! They loved her. She would come visit with Rick's mom when she lived with us until she passed away. She helped a lot when my dad died in She was a ball of fun! A breath of fresh air! When we had the ground breaking ceremony at the property where we are located now...rick played the guitar and Diane Roe lead us in Sister Jo's favorite hymn...this is Holy Ground! I never play that song without seeing her sweet face and remember her loving spirit! I know that Vera, Olive and Sister Jo are all singing together in Heaven. Rick & I went to South Carolina 3 years ago to visit with her. She was one of those people that came into your life that you will never forget! Diane Roe said tonight at choir practice that she was our female version of Father Martino. May she rest in peace. St. Joseph Tool box Raffle The Outreach Assistance office will be selling tickets again this weekend for the St. Joseph Tool box raffle. Tickets will be sold for $5.00 each and all proceeds will benefit the outreach assistance program to provide assistance for those in need of help with their electric bills this summer.. The raffle will take place on Sunday, June 17, after the 11 am Mass. Thank You, Felicia Ebot-Ojong THANKSGIVING The word thanksgiving most often calls to our mind the holiday in November. But as early as the middle of the second century Justin Martyr referred to the blessed bread and wine of the Lord s Supper as food we call thanksgiving (in Greek eucharistia). The Thanksgiving we celebrate in the autumn is at times marked by a sort of proud societal self-congratulation and the consumption of food until we sink into an inert stupor. The thanksgiving that we call our Eucharist is just the opposite: we are led to it by an acknowledgment of our own failings; we remember our humble place in the scheme of things by giving praise to God alone. While the food of Christ s body and blood fills our spiritual hungers, it also creates in us a greater hunger. We are not sent to our spiritual sofas to let the Lord s Supper settle; we are sent to be living signs of that thanksgiving for the world by looking out for the poor and powerless, feeding the hungry, caring for the sick, speaking out against the self righteous. In short, the hunger created by our doing in remembrance of Christ must lead us to living in remembrance of him. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION It has been said that the Church breathes with two lungs, East and West. Some of our family treasures are in the East, and it is interesting to consider how liturgical families developed around differing customs. Centuries before Christ, after the young girl was given to her husband by her father, the spouses were crowned. Christians retained that custom, keeping the wedding in the home, and sometimes inviting a visiting priest or bishop to put the crowns on their heads. By the fourth century, the crowns were seen not as royal crowns, but as the crowns of victory worn by martyrs. The crowns have nothing to do with being king and queen for a day, but rather speak of the sacrifice of love poured out fully. There are no vows exchanged at all, but the crowning is followed by a joyful dance by the priest and couple around the Gospel book. Unlike Roman law, which saw the wedding rites as optional, Eastern practice did not recognize a marriage that had not been blessed. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.

5 Catholic Focus Immediately after 8:30 a.m. Mass each Sunday (9:30 a.m.), adults of all ages meet in the Education Building in the Catholic Focus classroom. We study and discuss how to apply the scriptures from the Masses to our daily lives. Classes are led by dedicated Catholic Catechist Disciples. We encourage you to become part of this loving group.
