2 1st Sunday of Lent After John had been arrested, Jesus came to Galilee proclaiming the gospel of God. - Mark 1:14 Do you ever think about how difficult it must have been for Jesus to come into Galilee, knowing that John had just been arrested for teaching the same message that Jesus was proclaiming. It must have taken great love and trust for Jesus to do what the Father had sent Him here on earth to do. In the same way, following a life of stewardship takes great love and trust from us. We must be willing to surrender completely to God, trusting that God will always give us all that we need to fulfill His plan for us. Being willing to surrender completely to God, makes us question ""What is Christianity?" -In the home it is kindness. -In business it is honesty. -In society it is courtesy. -In work it is fairness. -Toward the unfortunate it is pity. -Toward the weak it is help. -Toward the wicked it is resistance. -Toward the strong it is trust. -Toward the fortunate it is congratulations. -Toward God it is reverence and LOVE. Martino Back in early November, Fr. Martino had requested parents to send in their college students information so that he could contact them and visit with them. 3 Across the entire world, Catholic bishops on this first Sunday of Lent welcome those catechumens sent by the parish to gather together with their godparents and sponsors in what is known as the Rite of Election. Today we celebrate the rite of sending of our candidates and catechumens at St. Boniface. We ask that you pray for our Catechumen, Johnny Gallipoli, and for our candidates, Dara Gallipoli, Nicole and Randy Kline, Debra Lafferty, Brian Laham, & Illiana Simmons. Congratulations South University faculty member Kathryn Klock- Powell has been appointed by Gov. Nathan Deal to serve on the Georgia Composite Board of Professional Counselors, Social Workers and Marriage & Family Therapists. Dr. Klock-Powell is director of South s master of arts in clinical mental health counseling program and serves on the board of directors of the Georgia Association of Marriage and Family Therapy. Praying the Scriptures for Lent Are you wondering what to give up for Lent? How about a little time! Come and enhance your prayer life. Here is your chance to join in a deepening of your spiritual journey. During Lent for 6 weeks join us in the in the Catholic Focus room Tuesday mornings from 9:15-10:45 am. beginning February 24-March 31, for Lectio Divina, praying with the Psalms. All you need to bring is a pen, notebook paper or a small note book for journaling. Because we need a quiet environment, this is for adults and older students, please. THE MEANING OF OUR BAPTISM Lent is the time of year that we devote to scrutinizing our lives in the light of our baptism into the death and resurrection of Jesus. Today s readings are a nice shorthand catechism of what our baptized lives mean. As Noah passed through the waters of the flood to a covenant with God, so did we enter into a covenant, a promised relationship with God through our baptism. The psalm reminds us that if we truly keep the covenant, the way of life God expects us to follow will not be a burden, but a source of love and truth. Peter s letter gives one explanation of what our baptism means: it is an appeal that we make to God for a clear conscience. How do we obtain this clear conscience? The words that Jesus proclaims immediately following his temptation show us the way: Repent and believe in the gospel. It might be a good spiritual exercise to keep these readings before us throughout the entire season of Lent, a means to help us return to a life lived in our baptismal promises. Copyright J. S. 5 St. Boniface VIRTUS Class Tues., Mar. 10, 6:30-9:30PM VIRTUS class available at St. Boniface on Tuesday, March 10, 6:30PM - 9:30PM. This class is mandatory for those adults who come into contact with anyone under the age of 18 during the course of their ministry and is for the protection of our children. List of applicable St. Boniface ministries that presently apply per the Diocese of Savannah compliance requirement: Pastor Deacon Faith Formation volunteers Youth Ministry volunteers Nursery employees/volunteers Any adult volunteer / employee who helps with building or landscape maintenance where youth are helping with that ministry Ushers Eucharistic Ministers Lectors (pastor s discretion) Any adult volunteer with altar service who volunteers with youth Any music ministry employee or volunteer where youth are part of the ministry Any other adult the pastor identifies for compliance ie., Family Promise ministry adult volunteer Registration is required at virtusonline.org. The class will be held in the Faith Formation building. Please arrive early, class will start promptly with no admittance after doors close. If you wish feel free to bring a snack. No one under 18 allowed due to sensitive subject matter. Class limit 30. Any questions please call Cindy Felipe, Manna House Needs Volunteers St. Boniface is one of 27 churches in Effingham who support Manna House with volunteer workers We are woefully low on help right now. Manna House needs volunteers effective immediately, for at least two hours a week, Mondays or Thursdays, contact is if you are interested in volunteering your time. Diocese of Savannah Bishops Annual Appeal 2015 Last week Fr. Martino spoke about the Bishop s Annual Appeal. And this is just a reminder, that if you haven t made your pledge to the Bishop's Annual Appeal, please consider doing so this week. As good stewards, please prayerfully consider your gift this year. The people of this parish have a history of great generosity. This year our parish goal is $23, If you have been a regular supporter of the Bishops Annual Appeal in the past, we thank you, please continue that generous tradition. As Fr. Martino said, its not how much you give, its that you give with a joyful heart. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Fasting may be a priority in your Lenten springcleaning regimen. Almost every religious tradition recognizes that fasting is a key to heightened spiritual awareness. You know this from your own experience. When you are engaged in a hobby, painting a room, keeping vigil near a delivery room, or standing watch at a sickbed, you may simply forget to eat. What you are doing so fills you that the intensity of the action is itself nourishing. In fasting from food, or drink, or habitual behaviors, you make room for what is truly important. Even though Lenten Sundays stand apart from the Lenten fast, you will notice traces of fasting in our liturgy. We fast from singing the Gloria and Alleluia, we fast from flowers bedecking the altar, and there may be a noticeable drop in the number of infant baptisms as parents elect to wait until Easter. This hints that fasting is a prelude to feasting, and the vigor of our Easter alleluias is rich fare after a long silence. In the same way, even a small fast no cream in the coffee, no pepper in the soup, no radio in the car can not only point to deeper hungers, but help us rejoice more fully in the feast when we break our fast together. 6 Faith Formation News Celeste Gish-DRE Class times: 9:45 am to 10:45 am When classes are in session. Faith Formation Penance Fr. Martino will be unavailable to hear Faith Formation penance during class time in March. Please bring your child to our parish penance at 7pm, February 25, or during regular reconciliation hours (4:00 to 4:30 pm) on Saturdays. First Communion Parents Meeting There will be a meeting Sunday, March 15, at 10 a.m. for parents of children receiving First Communion this May. If you are unable to attend please see the DRE. St. Boniface Youth Formation Meets Wednesday evenings from 7:00-9:00 p.m. and Sunday mornings from 9:45-10:45 am in the Annex next to the rectory. All students 7-12th grade are welcome to attend. Catholic Focus Immediately after 8:30 a.m. Mass each Sunday (9:30 a.m.), adults of all ages meet in in the Education Building in the Catholic Focus classroom. We study and discuss how to apply the scriptures from the Masses to our daily lives. Classes are led by dedicated Catholic Catechist Disciples. We encourage you to become part of this loving group. You will not regret it! So just visit with us and see for yourself!
