Thinking your time is so valuable, your talent is better than anyone else and your money gives you status is another way of making those things gods before God. Remember all those gifts were God-given. Instead we should be humbled by God s abundant generosity and our hearts should be filled with gratitude. A DISCOVERY! St. Bernadette Soubirous Jubilee of Mercy October 23, 2016 Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time Today s Gospel graces us with a beautiful prayer that can make every day of our lives a jubilee of mercy: O God, be merciful to me a sinner (Luke 18:13). Religious Israelites despised the tax collector who prayed it, for collaborating with Gentile occupiers and handling currency that bore the divine emperors graven image. But the Pharisee s longwinded self-congratulation, mixed with self-righteous condemnation, was no prayer at all. The Pharisee... spoke this prayer to himself (18:11, emphasis added). Praying the tax collector s simple, sincere, succinct cry for mercy acknowledges our own sinfulness, and welcomes other sinners as brothers and sisters with whom we can identify, even empathize, echoing Pope Francis famous comment about not being the one to judge. Indeed, the tax collector went home justified (18:14), that is, restored to God s friendship, for God s mercy is not prize achieved but gift received. 3 ANSWER: Did you know that if asked what the 4th commandment is, a Catholic will answer differently than a Protestant (except for Lutherans). Yes, there is a different numbering system for the Ten Commandments depending on who did the counting. The Bible itself, never numbers them. There were not even any chapter or verse numbers until 1,000 years after the last book was written. St. Augustine, in the 5th Century, was the first one to give a definite number to each commandment. 4 What Are You Doing For Thanksgiving? How about a St. Boniface Thanksgiving dinner? We know that there are many people who do not have a family dinner to go to, so why not enjoy a day of Thanksgiving with your Church family. If you are interested in coming, we will have a sign up sheet available beginning the weekend of October 8/9. We would like everyone to bring a dish to share, your favorite Thanksgiving dish, potatoes, vegetable, deserts, salads, etc. Dinner will be after the 11 am Mass on Thanksgiving Day. Let s start a new tradition, spending time with the people we love, our Church family. Scout Project Needs Your Help My name is Nicholas Stark and I am a Life Scout with Boy Scout Troop 650 and currently working toward the rank of Eagle Scout. For my project I will be providing St. Boniface Catholic Church with a brick fire pit and two benches for seating to be used during social gatherings at the church. The funds will be used to purchase the fire bricks for the fire pit, lumber for the benches, and wood for the first fire, food for those who come out and help. I would like to begin building in November so any donations you would be willing to give would be needed by October 27, Achieving this rank means a lot to me because not only have I worked hard, but I have also enjoyed all of the adventures and experiences I have had in my scouting life. I would be most thankful for any help you may be willing to provide in helping me obtain this goal. Storm Clean-Up Scheduled A storm clean-up has been scheduled for October 29, 2016 from 8 am-12:00 noon. We had several trees that came down during the storm and several we had to cut due to them leaning and in danger of coming down. There is a lot of brush that needs to be removed from the Rosary trail and wood that needs to be moved that was cut down. Due to hazardous conditions, we ask that no small children brought out to help. Teenagers are welcome and adults are welcome! 5 ANSWER: Well, the King James Version of the Bible has the doxology (the phrase For thine is the kingdom, the glory and power, forever and ever. Amen) at the end of the Lord s prayer in Mt. 6:9-13, but other English versions and the original Greek and the Latin of St. Jerome do not have it. The phrase is part of our Mass, but comes slightly later. Faith Formation News All Souls Prayer Service rescheduled The All Souls Prayer Service at Veterans Park has been rescheduled for November 13. Please plan to bring your children to the Faith Formation building before the prayer service so teachers can take attendance. Parents will then be responsible for transporting their children to and from the park. Penance and prayer checks coming up On October 30, third-grader penance will be heard and prayers will be checked for Pre-K, kindergarten and first grade. Prayer checks rescheduled Fifth- and sixth-graders will be prayer-checked on November 6. Please encourage your child to be prepared. Help can hunger Don t forget to bring non-perishable foods until November 13. We need stuffing mix, cranberry sauce, canned fruit, canned green beans, mac and cheese, canned milk, French-fried onions, cream of mushroom soup, turkey gravy, Jell-O, instant pudding and bags of sugar for Thanksgiving food baskets. NET Ministries is an international youth ministry that conducts over 1000 retreats for teens each year. This year's retreat theme is "Strength in Numbers (Authentic Friendships)" and will be held at Villa Marie Center from 2:00-7:30. Moved by Mercy-Respect Life Month The Election The election in November is nothing short of a life and death matter. There are many important issues, such as the war and terrorism. However, when nearly 4,000 of our fellow citizens die each day without a trial or any means of defending themselves, abortion has to be the overriding issue. Candidates of both parties have various solutions to the serious problems in our society, but only some will work toward ending the biggest problem. Crime must drop, health care must be more widely available, and education must improve, but all of these goals are worthless if we say that they are off limits to one-third of our society. If these goals are really important, then our first goal must be allowing all people to enjoy them. A VIRTUS class has been scheduled at St. Peter the Apostle Church on November 16th. This training is required for Safe Environment Compliance for any adult who will come into contact with youth as part of their ministry (a listing of those ministries can be found at and must be completed before they begin ministry. We also invite adults who are not currently volunteers to attend this training to learn tools they can use to help keep children safe. Seating is limited at this session and you must pre-registration online to save your seat. St. Boniface Baptism Class Sunday, October 30, 2016 St. Boniface s final baptism class of 2016 will be held on Sunday, October 30, 12:30 3:00 PM. This class is intended for soon to be parents, first time parents, and parents of first child to be baptized in the Catholic faith.
